He has been compared to Horace Pippin, a turn-of-the-century artist but considers his greatest influence to be Edward Hopper, known for his painting “Nighthawks.” He is a veteran of many art shows, auctions and galleries. His current works consisting of ocean, beaches, and street scenes can be seen at Greenport’s Fiedler Gallery. 6 ON G REENPORT — 2018
and the North Fork! Let te r fro m t h e e d i to r I t’s never been so exciting out here, and it just keeps getting better. New ideas and ventures, an influx of artists, craftspeople, wine producers and farmers, and of course our visitors all combine to create a really vibrant scene. On Greenport lets you in on the action and gives you all the information you need to plan a great time while you’re here. If you’ve been to the North Fork wineries lately, you know they can get a *little* busy. It can be hard to coordinate a relaxing, quality experience, what with festive crowds, busy servers who may not have time to answer all your questions, and, of course, the eternal dilemma of who gets to be the designated driver! Vintage Tours has created an elegant solution, offering high-end, small, informative tours that include wine tasting, lunch and Gwendolen Groocock transportation. We meet the company’s delightful owner Jo Anne Perry, a long-time North Fork resident and expert on the local wine industry. The Greenport art scene continues to thrive, and a new art collective has sprung up to join the collectives and galleries that laid the foundation years ago. Here’s a peek at the art and artists that are part of this evolving collaboration; we wish them the best of luck! I’m excited about two great new, fun additions to Greenport this year: the American Legion Burton Potter Post 185 roller skating rink and the Fire Fighter fireboat museum. The rink is an old friend to generations of ‘Porters who grew up rolling to the music and having fun, and it’s back now after almost a decade of community-driven fundraising and restoration. The Fire Fighter fireboat was the pride of the NY harbor fleet, and is now retired and moored permanently at the Greenport docks. It has a fascinating history, and is celebrating its 80th birthday this year. Both attractions are worth a visit and are kid-friendly. Looking for things to do in the Greenport area? Just peek inside at On Greenport’s expanded calendar of events. It’s much more comprehensive than any other calendar for the area, so keep this little guide handy. More details for these events and others are at ongreenport.com, where you’ll also find the link to our sister publication, On Montauk, at onmontauk.com, which gives you everything you need to know to navigate “The End” of the South Fork. Enjoy! Gwen Groocock Editor ONG REENPORT.COM 7

Story and Photos by Gwen Groocock Greenport Skating Rink Reopens! R oller skating is good, old-fashioned fun. Now, after being closed for many years, Greenport’s iconic skating rink is open once again to the public, with skating sessions throughout the week for kids, teens and adults, and availability for private events. It’s a great addition to the Greenport scene. The rink is located in the Burton Potter American Legion Post 185, a big building right near Greenport’s boardwalk and the North Ferry to Shelter Island. It’s nothing fancy, but it has everything it needs. and started on a long road of fundraising and renovations. George D. Costello Sr., a Vietnam veteran and part-owner of a successful local construction company, dedicated years of his own time to the renovation. Superstorm Sandy in 2012 flooded the building and destroyed much of his work, and he, sadly, also died that year. It seemed for a time that the project died with him, but a new wave of volunteers and donors took up the cause. The doors reopened in March this year. The renovated space will also serve as a community center, hosting fundraisers, weddings, meetings, private parties and other events. Check out the calendar at greenportamericanlegion.org.
