SHAWNEE COUNTY PARKS + RECREATION VISION: “Shawnee County Parks + Recreation in partnership with the citizens of Topeka and Shawnee County will develop and manage accessible, walkable parks, recreation facilities and programs through a collaborative leadership process that provides a long- term perspective for how parks and recreation will impact the livability and economic value of living in the city and county.” SHAWNEE COUNTY PARKS + RECREATION MISSION: “Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is an essential service established to improve quality of life for all residents of the county by proactively responding to changing demographics, emerging trends while maximizing all available resources in providing quality parks, recreation facilities and programs that enhance the residents’ health, promote economic vitality and long term sustainability now and for future generations.” REFUND POLICY AND PROCEDURE It is the intention of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation (SCP+R) to offer a refund and/or account credit for participants who qualify and meet the requirements. Participants who paid by cash, check or credit card will be issued a refund by check. All check refunds follow the County Treasurer’s bill paying schedule. There are no cash refunds. A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. TULIP TIME TULIP TIME INCLUDES THREE POPULAR SPECIAL EVENTS: TULIPS AT TWILIGHT Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade Botanical Garden Becoming one of Topeka’s favorite special events, APRIL Tulips at Twilight features more than 35 lighted 5-22 displays including larger-than-life illuminated flowers and more than 40,000 multi-colored tulips. Bring a friend and stroll along lighted pathways. Enjoy live music and historic Old Prairie Town tours on Friday and Saturday evenings. The garden is open Sunday through Thursday for a more tranquil experience. This event is hosted by the Friends 120,000 tulips; three public gardens; of Ward-Meade and Shawnee County Parks and three special events Recreation Foundation. TULIP TIME FESTIVAL AT THE LAKE Ted Ensley Gardens/Lake Shawnee The very popular Tulip Time Festival at the Lake returns to Ted Ensley Gardens again this year. Grab lunch from your favorite food truck, enjoy musical performances, visit the craft vendors, sit in on a master gardener class and, of course, stroll the gardens to view 60,000 tulips in bloom on a beautiful spring day. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation plans to make $1.3 million worth of improvements 18 parks to 18 local parks. Improvements range from earmarked for new playground equipment and surfaces to improvements beginning in 2018: park benches, concrete work, lighting and new Aaron Douglas Art Park signage. Some parks that exist as natural areas Austin Park will be reassessed for purpose and potential.
