SECOND STORY PRESS fall 2022 | 1 A note from the publisher Dear Reader, This fall, Second Story has many excellent books for young people heading into the classroom. It’s a time for fun and optimism, for looking forward to learning, inspiration, and days with friends. Sadly, along with the fear and disruption the pandemic has brought, the evils of hate have come out of the shadows. Incidents of racism against many communities, anti-Semitism, ableism, and anti-LGBTQ+ violence have dramatically increased in schools. Yes, children are drawing swastikas in classrooms, teachers of color are being threatened, and incidents of Islamophobia and all forms of bullying have found a place in the lives of our youth. Educators and parents are fighting back. And more than ever, publishers are creating literature for young people that addresses issues of hate. Writers from many communities are sharing stories and experiences that celebrate our differences while exploring the consequences of hate, and helping young readers understand the suffering it causes for each of us, as well as for our friends, classmates, and neighbors. In this vein, our fall list is filled with stories that combat prejudice with love, acceptance, and celebration. From Phoenix Gets Greater, a stunning picture book by a mother and her Two Spirit son, to the fourth installment in the Mighty Muskrats Mystery Series, to an inspiring YA nonfiction that profiles some lesser-known heroines of the Holocaust. Our adult program is perfectly complementary: Fractured, a memoir by Susan Mockler, explores the challenges that come with a sudden, life-changing physical disability, and award-winning author Karin Wells’ new book, More Than a Footnote, highlights the Find us on social media accomplishments of some incredible women trailblazers. To top it off, Ann Lambert delivers another Russell & Leduc mystery that thrills as it @_secondstory challenges societal expectations. @_secondstory /SecondStoryPress Take a look—we’re sure you’ll find this season as compelling as ever. /secondstorypress Visit our website for the most complete and up-to-date information on all our titles, Margie Wolfe plus: Publisher • free teacher’s guides • audio and video resources Cover credit: Megan Kyak-Monteith • ebooks and audiobooks Printed in Canada • book club guides Second Story’s office in Tkaronto (Toronto) • blog posts is situated in the traditional territories of many nations including the Haudenosaunee, • adult, teen, and children’s subject index Huron-Wendat, Anishnabeg, Métis, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit. Or Margaret Keiko Lyons—exiled to the prairies during WWII as part of Canada’s racist policies towards Japanese Canadians, she went on to lead a radio revolution in the 1970s. And have you heard of Charlotte Small, a Métis woman who canoed and trekked 48,000 km—more than three times further than the American explorers Lewis and Clark—and had five babies along the way? Some were outrageous, some were unassuming, most were not polite, but they all ignored the voices that said women could not paddle a canoe, program a computer, understand the KEYWORDS: HISTORY, October UNSUNG HEROES, HISTORY/Women universe, or cure a disease.
