View in browser FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF INSURANCE AGENTS for your eyes only MARCH 27, 2019 | VOLUME LXVIII, ISSUE 12 ADVOCACY FAIA members call for end to AOB abuse Led by FAIA member and Senator Doug Broxson, more than 125 agents and consumers marched from downtown Tallahassee to the front steps of the old Capitol last week to call for an end to abusive AOB practices that are harming Florida consumers by increasing the cost of home and auto insurance. The march was held in conjunction with FAIA’s Capitol Days, and is just one of the ways your association advocates on your behalf. FAIA board member Chris Heidrick, CPCU, CFP, ANFI, recently testified before the U.S. House Financial Services Committee on reauthorization of the NFIP. Chris—the only insurance witness to testify at the hearing—also chairs the Big “I” Flood Insurance Task Force. He fielded several questions from members of Congress, and ensuring that flood insurance is affordable for low-income property owners and helping expand the private market emerged as important FAIA board member Chris themes. Department of Labor seeks to update overtime rule The Department of Labor recently proposed a new overtime rule that is much more limited in scope than the Obama administration’s rule that was ultimately struck down by a federal court in 2017. If finalized, the proposal would increase the minimum salary level threshold for overtime-exempt employees from $23,660 per year to $35,308 per year, roughly an inflationary increase. Unstacked UM: Penny wise, pound foolish When it comes to uninsured motorist coverage, too many agents push price over coverage, even when the difference can be literally pennies. But Jim Nolan, owner of Nolan Family Insurance Agency in Punta Gorda, gets it. He shared a recent success story with David Thompson. READ MORE IN MEMORIAM Louis L. Schlitt We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Louis L. Schlitt, who passed away March 3. He was a native of Vero Beach, Florida, who received a B.A. from FSU’s Business School in insurance and real estate. He joined the Ed Schlitt Agency as a partner in 1958 and later created Schlitt Insurance Services, which is run by his nephew, Robert Schlitt, Jr., and son, FAIA Past Chairman Jeff Schlitt. Louis was very active in his community, serving as president of the United Way and Lions Club, and on the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce. He will be remembered by all who knew him. Aon PLC: partnered with insurtech firm Claim Central to digitize and streamline claims management. Claim Central plans to open a center in Jacksonville to manage the product. City of Sarasota: Current flood-plain information and technical assistance is available from the City of Sarasota for properties within the city limits.
