Case Study - Dunhuang Digital Innovation
Influenced by Covid-19, people have to cancel travel plans for a long period. While staying at home, there is a general need to
adjust the mindset and rethink how to live more meaningfully at home for individuals, and to adjust strategies and study how
to effectively promote tourism resources in this special period for destinations.

Against the background of Covid-19, Dunhuang takes 2 actions to impel its digital innovation and brand promotion.

• Mogao Grottoes has launched a WeChat mini program “Cloud
Dunhuang" for those who have been at home in February. The
virtual tour integrates the exploration, visiting and the
protection of Mogao Grottoes. In the two months since its
launch, the total number of visitors has exceeded 12 million,
which is equivalent to more than half of the provincial
reception for the 2019 National Day holiday.

• Several stories depicted on the murals of the Mogao Grottoes
have been brought to life through animations to draw more
younger fans. The animations adapted from the mural stories
consist of five episodes, each running less than five minutes,
and were jointly launched this week by the Dunhuang
Academy, which administers the Mogao Grottoes, and tech
giant Tencent. Visitors can not only watch the animations on a
mini-program, but also participate in the voice acting and
interaction of the animation plays in person.
