Faculty of Education Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Training 2020/21 Early Years Education Faculty of Education
Department of Early Years Education Our departmental CPD sessions are aimed at students, staff and early years practitioners/teachers working in partner schools and settings. Sessions are designed and delivered by our own expert Early Years Education tutors and partners at Edge Hill University and are free to attend. Date: Thursday 13th May 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm The Child as a Competent Learner – Theoretical Perspectives This session will look at some of the key theories, principles and processes relating to the development of young children generally and in specific developmental domains. Date: Monday 17th May 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Forest School Taster Session EYFS An introduction to the Forest School approach, philosophy and practice. The session will consist of a brief classroom-based rationale with some discussion, before undertaking a small number of practical activities designed to promote reflection on the outdoors as a rich and engaging learning environment Jackie Sumner Early Years Education Faculty of Education
Date: Wednesday 19th May 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Helping Boys to Succeed in Year 1 Aims : To look at some of the theories relating to children's learning. To examine the effectiveness of the transition from Reception to Year 1. To look at aspects of teaching and learning which interest boys and getting the most from these opportunities by still linking them to the National Curriculum. To think about ways of accessing role models in Key stage 1 to develop boy's interests. Gill Finney Early Years Education Faculty of Education
Date: Monday 24th May 2021 Time: 4.00-5.30pm Leading change – EYFS Reforms This session is for Senior Leaders/Managers/Governors A revised EYFS Framework will become statutory from September 2021 This session will provide an update on the recent EYFS reforms, new Development Matters (DfE 2020) and where the new Birth to Five Matters (Early Education 2021) fits into the support materials for EYFS settings and schools. Aims: To explore the context of the EYFS 2020 reforms Unpick the main changes to the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) Consider the new non-statutory ‘Development Matters’ (DfE, 2020) and the new sector-led Birth to Five Matters (Early Education, 2021) Discuss some of the barriers/challenges of leading and implementing change Dr. Karen Boardman/Denise Corfield Early Years Education Faculty of Education
Date: Wednesday 9th June 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Developing young children’s engagement and learning through Beach School Many practitioners are developing their Forest School approach but now there is an alternative which utilises or local beaches to provide children with experiences that encourage an appreciation, awareness and knowledge of the natural environment. It gives children the opportunity to understand how to self-assess risks and keep themselves and others safe, explore, experiment and investigate all areas of the curriculum and to understand the importance of the beach environment and the need for conservation. This session will be held on Ainsdale beach (Southport). We will discuss the principles of Beach School and associated Health and Safety requirements as well as approaches to learning and development across the areas of learning. Date: Thursday 18th June 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Phonics Outdoors This session is designed to support practitioners/teachers with contextualising phonics ‘application’. This session offers opportunities to explore how to support children with their ‘phonics’ understanding in context outdoors, as an enhancement to the discrete teaching of phonics. Application, as in children’s understanding of reading and spelling is often best approached in context and within meaningful activities. Date: Monday 28th June 2021 Time: 4.00-6.00pm NEW: Music and Singing in the new EYFS framework This session will explore resources suitable for singing with young children including practical ideas for using songs and rhymes appropriately for different age groups. The resources from the session will be shared including voice recordings of all songs used. Learning outcomes: To gain an understanding of musical development in early childhood To increase confidence through a better understanding of how to use singing games & rhymes to support musical development (with reference to the new Development Matters) To explore strategies for embedding music within everyday provision. Please note: Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is intended that the sessions will be held online. However, outdoor learning sessions will be ‘in person’ where possible (subject to change).
