EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 NOBLESSE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Circumferential Road, Fil-Am Friendship Highway, Cutcut, Angeles City
Dear Parents/Guardians I welcome you all on-board, the new and existing students and parents of Noblesse, for the new academic year 2020-2021. Life has taken a sudden and dramatic turn in the event of the present crisis. As a school, we understand the difficulties that parents are currently facing. As a faculty, we are here to support you and guide you through the process to ensure that your child is fully engaged in the transdisciplinary units and confident using our online platforms. In preparation for the upcoming school year, we have made several key changes which we believe will simplify the online learning experience and most importantly, ensure that your child reaches his/her potential. Key Changes to EYS Increase in core classes (7- Unit of Inquiry, 7 – Language Arts, 7 - Math) Homeroom teacher will hold whole class/group/individual video calls with students everyday (Google Meet) Music will be scheduled twice a week via video calls (Google Meet) Elective classes (Art, PE, Computers) will be integrated into the core classes by the homeroom teacher Mandarin has been removed from the schedule during online classes in order to focus on core classes and so not to overwhelm students with content EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 1
Key Changes to Elementary Increase in core classes (7- Unit of Inquiry, 7 – Language Arts, 7 - Math) Homeroom/elective teacher will hold whole class/small group/one to one video calls with students for the duration of the scheduled class (Google Meet). For example: during a double period, the teacher may conduct a whole class call during the first period then work with several smaller groups during the second. Music, Mandarin and Philippine History will remain as elective classes Art, PE and Computer class will be integrated into the core classes by the homeroom teacher Semester exams have now been removed with the assessment focus shifting to the projects completed within each PYP Transdisciplinary Theme Over the past few months our teachers have been working to develop an online learning environment along with materials for learning. We have been preparing for the upcoming school year by ensuring that we integrate effective e-learning platforms (Google Classroom, SeeSaw, Class Dojo) along with an engaging, rigorous curriculum which enables all students to reach their potential. Please read through the handbook to learn more about our online platforms. As the elementary school coordinator, I would like to introduce to you the EYS/Elementary team and please remember that my “virtual door” is always open. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 2

Curriculum The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum designed for students aged 3-11. It is the first part of the IB’s curriculum for 3-18/19 year olds, culminating in the Diploma Programme, an internationally recognised and respected post-18 qualification. The IB curricula aims to help children become successful learners in the contexts of the 21st Century; to become adults who are able to work successfully in a rapidly changing world, and to have the determination, flexibility and character to succeed in their lives. The central purpose of the PYP is to develop the attributes and traits identified in the IB Learner Profile. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 5
They develop these attributes within the classroom, during assemblies, on the playground, and while participating in Noblesses’ many extracurricular activities. We encourage our whole community to develop these attributes, so students should also be showing these characteristics at home (and so should parents!). The PYP is all about inquiry: the process through which a learner moves from his or her current level of understanding to a new and deeper level. Our students will be: • Exploring, wondering and questioning • Collecting data and reporting findings • Taking and defending a position • Using critical thinking skills to understand a concept • Making and testing theories • Experimenting and playing with possibilities • Solving problems in a variety of ways. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 6
What will your child be learning? During each year of school, students in Grade 1 (5-6 years) to Grade 5 (10-11 years) experience six different units of inquiry and spend approximately six weeks on each unit. Early Childhood (3-5 years) students experience four units of inquiry throughout each school year. All units explore the transdisciplinary themes of: Who We Are Where We Are In Place and Time How We Express Ourselves How The World Works How We Organise Ourselves Sharing The Planet The PYP is a transdisciplinary curriculum, which draws individual disciplines together into a coherent whole, while preserving the essence of each subject. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 7
Programme of Inquiry (POI) The PYP Programme of Inquiry. The Primary Years Programme is structured around six transdisciplinary themes that are developed into the schools' programme of inquiry (POI); within these themes students are exposed to units of learning that promote inquiry and investigation. Online Platforms What is Google Classroom? Google Classroom is a class-organization platform that incorporates Google's core G Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and other Google products) so students can access everything they need for a class, including homework assignments, group projects, files, and even Google Hangouts to chat with the teacher or the entire class. How do you set up Google Classroom? Your child will receive an email invite from their teacher with a link or a code they use to join the class. They'll be directed to classroom.google.com, where they log in using their school email account to access the class their teacher has added them to. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 12
What iS Google Meet? Google Meet is Google a video conferencing app. Google’s platform enables teachers to schedule video calls with students to have high definition virtual video meetings. Our first session with students may be a challenge but it will get better when we “meet” again. How do you set up Google Meet? The homeroom teacher will create a chat group in Hangouts where students can talk with the teacher. The link to enter to video conferencing call will then be sent by the teacher. The students simply click the link which then instantly directs them to the call. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 13
What is SeeSaw? Seesaw is a digital portfolio system that allows students to engage in learning activities and share their work with their teacher and their family. The communication tools allow families to comment on student work and receive progress updates from teachers. Students add posts to their journals. Student posts showcase the academic projects they've been working on in the classroom. This could include photos, artwork, videos, activities, notes, projects they've created in other apps, and more. https://web.seesaw.me/parents How do you setup SeeSaw? 1. Open the Seesaw Class app on iOS or Android. Or go to app.seesaw.me on any computer in Chrome or Firefox browser. 2. Choose I’m a Student. 3. Type in the code provided by the teacher to join your class. Students will only use this code once. 4. Sign in with your Google account or create an account with your email address and password. EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 14
What is Class Dojo? Class Dojo is an interactive reward system that allows you to see how your children are getting on in school. ClassDojo informs you when your child receives a Dojo point, and what it is for. Dojo points are given for a variety of reasons and encourage children to work hard and participate fully. Messaging is another integral part of ClassDojo as parents and teachers can communicate with each other easily on matters pertaining to, e.g. class announcements and reminders. How do you setup SeeSaw? 1. Go to home.classdojo.com. 2. Select “Parent” from the center of the screen. 3. Enter your parent code and select “Check code” and Click on "I'm ___'s Parent" OR select “Sign up,” enter your first and last name, email address, and create a password before clicking "Sign Up" again. What is Raz Kids? Raz-Kids is an award-winning teaching product that provides comprehensive levelled reading resources for students. With hundreds of eBooks offered at 29 different levels of reading difficulty, it's easy to put the right content in every student's hands. Kids access their levelled text through an interactive learning portal designed to keep them motivated and engaged. Every eBook is available in online and mobile formats, and allows students to listen to, read at their own pace, and record themselves reading. Students then take a corresponding eQuiz complete with an extended answer response to test comprehension and determine future instruction needs. Once a child has read ten or more of the levelled eBooks and passed each of the corresponding eQuizzes, they advance on to the next reading level where they have access to lengthier and more difficult text. How will you know how your child is doing? Students and teachers are actively involved in assessing students’ progress. Assessment involves the gathering and analysis of student performance and is designed to inform teaching and learning. It identifies what students know, understand, can do, and feel at different stages in their learning. We use a balanced range of assessment tools and strategies, carefully designed to give students, parents and teachers a clear picture of a student’s progress. Some of these strategies are: • Observations • Performance assessments such as presentations, debates and role-plays • Teacher-student/student-student conferences and conversations • Tests with true/false, multiple-choice questions • Open-ended tasks such as written answers and drawing illustrations and diagrams. Some of the assessment tools are: • Rubrics: student and/or teacher-designed criteria • Benchmarks • Checklists • Anecdotal records: brief written notes based on observations of students EYS Elementary Handbook 2020/2021 17
We report on your child’s progress in the following ways: • Written reports • Parent-teacher conferences • Student-led conferences (where your child will share their learning with you) • Regular correspondence (email, notes, class unit newsletter) from the class teacher. Your child’s progress will be reported to you regularly both verbally and in writing. You are encouraged to play an active role in supporting your child’s learning by staying in touch with the class teacher throughout the year. How can you support your child’s learning? There are many ways in which Noblesse parents can support their children’s learning, including: • Ensure that your child completes their homework • Discuss the unit of inquiry • Discuss the profiles and attitudes that are being worked on • Read daily with your child • Visit the local library • Encourage independence, organisational and time management skills • Encourage maths concepts in everyday life (eg: when cooking/shopping) and practise times tables • Play games together (eg: Scrabble, Connect 4) • Write diaries, poems, stories together • Seek advice from school.
