Kingston Community School Honesty . Personal Best . Respect . Friendliness . Responsibility Principal: Ms Lucretia Tocaciu Newsletter 8: 7 August 2020 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Third term is always very busy as it is the last full term of associated with reading such as vocabulary or questioning schooling for our Year 12 students. They have recently received or inferential comprehension. Most of the primary staff are their Research Project results and we had 7 students in the “A” doing a numeracy sprint supported by Margarita Breed our band, 2 of which were “A+”, 6 in the “B” band and 8 students numeracy critical friend. They are working on place value or in the “C” band. Well done to all of them and their teachers multiplicative thinking. The early years’ staff are also continuing for their hard work and dedication in an extremely trying their work on phonics and R-9 are continuing their Brightpath year. It was particularly fortuitous that last year we did a good writing to ensure they achieve optimum growth. A number of deal of preparation for Research Project through our STEM the leadership team have also taken on small groups that they research. This further identified the need for extra preparation read with to assist with the development of phonics, decoding in Year 11 which resulted in the introduction of “Integrated and reading comprehension. Our early years’ team have a great learning” for all Year 11 students in 2020 in preparation for responsibility for the formative years of schooling and the more the research components of all their studies in Year 12. Many we can support them the better pathways we will create for Year 12 teachers including myself, hold off doing the research our children. They are doing a wonderful job and we need to components of our course until the students have finished remember it takes a village to raise a child. Research Project, so they have the skills taught in that subject, to be more successful in our tasks. Sporting opportunities are returning this term. Recently our senior boys had knockout football where they were successful Reality has hit some of our current Year 12 students and they in moving to the next round. Sapsasa football and netball are in the midst of applying for University and contemplating trials along with knockout netball are coming up soon. Thank their plans for 2021. It is a time of rapid change for them, you to all the parents and staff for supporting this. While the boundaries are changing and they are making independent students are returning to most activities, I am still mindful of decisions in a very chaotic world. They are a great bunch of the risk associated with some activities and students may be young adults I am sure they will cope with the tumultuous times disappointed if these activities are postponed due to tighter ahead, but we need to support them in their transition. restrictions or high risk. Some of our Year 8-10 students are having some issues settling At the end of this term we will begin the process of building into school since holidays and they are struggling with the world once again. This will no doubt cause some upheaval in an around them. Motivation has been difficult for many of them already disturbed year. The first step is the removal of our and it reminds us of the fragility of our students. I have asked transportable buildings including the Home Economics building. them to follow our simple school values both in school and in I was hoping that there would be a demand for the buildings the community, and be mindful of each other’s feelings and and they would be repurposed but at this stage whilst there has anxieties. Teachers are also noticing an escalation of anxiety been some interest in them, the logistics of moving them has issues in our younger students and it is important that we keep proved too difficult for those interested. I am still looking for up our normal routines even in troubled times. Thus, for staff, solutions but time is running out. Constant change is unsettling work goes on as normal and we continue to work with students for everyone: students, parents, teachers and community and on their improvement. often the best plans do not work out. All teachers on site are currently undertaking a “Teaching I will be asking for support to salvage some infrastructure that Sprint”. This is where we select a skill or concept we are can be repurposed in the build. This is quite overwhelming as it teaching and identify through research a small change we is starting over again- no undercover areas, no landscaping but I could make in the way we teach the skill or concept that would am sure collaboratively we can overcome adversity. be beneficial to the students. We then make the change and analyse the outcome. A sprint only last a few weeks and then Have a great weekend, stay safe and warm. another change can be made to continually improve the way we do things. ANZAC SPIRIT Congratulations to Erika Watson and Cassidy Hamilton-Smith who are recipients of the 2020 Anzac Spirit School Prize. The Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize provides the opportunity for young South Australians to examine and empathise the remarkable sacrifices of South Australian service men and women during the 20th century. The competition involves students researching a South Australian service man or woman who served during World War 1 or 2. Students also had to discuss how the individual they researched demonstrated the characteristics of the ANZAC spirit. Student work was judged by the depth of research involved and the written quality of the piece. PLAYGROUP IN SCHOOLS Playgroup provides opportunities for families to come along and play together in a relaxed and friendly environment. During our playgroup sessions I have noticed the adults sitting close with their child, talking together with them about what they are doing and seeing. They are being in the moment with their child, taking the time to listen and respond. I noticed that the adults have been happy to follow their child’s lead during play; they are supporting their child’s ideas. This is a great way to keep the play going. Talking together with children is great for building up their vocabulary; the more words they hear and know will support them to have success when they are learning to read. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE We know that in the last few months, our attendance data across the State has been much more closely monitored. The recent changes to the Act have highlighted our responsibilities in this space. In short, if children don’t attend then they don’t reach their potential; see below for some interesting facts about the importance of attendance. Did you know? • Missing one day a week of school from Reception to Year 10 means missing two years and one term of schooling. • There is a direct correlation between attendance and achievement. • Frequent absences make it difficult for teachers who have to continually re-teach information and skills. • Being half an hour late to school each day from Reception to Year 10 equals missing one year and one-and-a-half terms of schooling. • Patterns of attendance/absence are set up in the early years of schooling. • Being absent five days a term from Reception to Year 10 adds up to more than one year of missed schooling. • Students who are frequently absent from school are over-represented in the juvenile justice system. • Girls are absent more often than boys. • Poor attendance makes it difficult for students to form positive relationships with their peers. • Students who are frequently absent from school are more likely to end up homeless. • Indigenous students are absent twice as much as non-indigenous students. • Girls who are frequently absent from school are over-represented in the statistics for teenage pregnancies. • Research shows that students who are often absent from school are likely to earn less than their peers as adults
YEAR 6/7 PLASTIC FREE On the 30th July, Kingston Community School Year 6/7 Class went to numerous locations around the cross country track of KCS, picking up rubbish. A wide range of rubbish such as food wrapers, cans, bottles, balls, glass and other plastics were collected. Overall 12 bags of rubbish were picked up. After sorting, the plastic waste weighed 6.5kg. KCS Junior Student Representative Council members are busy making plans to help reduce plastic waste. YEAR 11/12 FOOD AND HOSPITALITY Last term the class was given the challenge to design and create a gingerbread structure. It was a big project which involved making templates to cut out gingerbread pieces and then constructing and decorating their structure over five lessons. The students learnt a lot about the connections between planning and actually creating the design. There were a number of challenges that the students encountered but they persevered and problem-solved to overcome any issues. Well done to the students for thinking outside the box, remaining calm during the practical and helping each other out when needed.
KNOCKOUT FOOTBALL Sapsasa HOCKEY Congratulations to Tamsyn Butler and Archie Carruthers-Murray who were selected in the Sapsasa hockey team. They will compete in Adelaide later this term.
