Feature Article HSIE 2018 HSIE is lucky to be the final Faculty to report on their activities in 2018. As such, we are pleased to provide an overview of the courses, excursions and activities that students have been involved in throughout the year. HSIE students have been busy getting ‘hands on’ in their courses, as well as participating in competitions and viewing presentations. Year 8 and 10 Geography In Geography, Year 8 and Year 10 students have been focusing on developing an understanding on the relationships between people and their environments. Students were encouraged to question the way the world is, reflect on their relationships and responsibilities for the world and propose actions that shape a socially just and sustainable future. An important part of the Geography courses is to use geographical skills and tools to conduct a geographical inquiry to acquire, process and communicate geographical information. Year 8 students undertook a field trip to Bathurst to investigate the water security of the Macquarie River. Similarly, Year 10 students conducted a field trip to the Environmental Learning Facility (ELF), a multi-functional centre for learning designed to provide a working demonstration of the technologies available for developing more ecologically sustainable lifestyles. In Commerce this year we have studied many subjects including Law in Action. I enjoyed this topic because I learnt about a range of different elements of law and how they can apply to different cases and parts of life. I enjoyed the assessment task as well because it explored a range of different Australian cases and explored the elements of law that applied to them. (Imogen Gailey) In Commerce I have enjoyed the topic on Travel. I enjoyed travel as I got to learn all the aspects you need to know in order to plan a holiday. Since I love travelling it was a fun experience. (Kaliopi Karamanolis) We studied Law in Action and I enjoyed this topic as we learned about different court cases. This topic also talked about crimes and accidents that could take you to court. (Thaygan Van Der Merwe) On Tuesday 11th December we hosted our very first ‘Market Day’ as part of our Running a Business topic. We had to plan, organise a run a small business, as well as develop strategies to address problems that arose during the process. Our business products included lemonade, popcorn, nachos, pancakes, iced coffees and ice-cream spiders. Year 11 Business Studies Students have studied three topics in their Preliminary Course: Nature of Business, Business Planning and Business Management. This year, students were very fortunate to listen to a presentation from young South Australian entrepreneur, Nathan Woodrow, which provided links to the content students studied with many of contemporary issues faced by Nathan in the business world. Nathan commenced his own online clothing business (Ryde Clothing) at the age of 16 in 2016, when he was in Year 11 at Remark High School. The students were inspired by Nathan’s story and we hope to see some budding entrepreneurs come from our two Business Studies classes in the near future.
Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies This year our Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies classes have been fortunate to attend 2 action packed excursions. Both of which were extremely engaging and an ideal reflection of course content and student learning. LSA Bathurst Regional Legal Studies Day Monday 28th May 2018 At the start of Term 2, it was with a stroke of luck that our Legal Studies students were fortunate enough to attend this LSA study day within our local region. Year 11 were immersed into legislation, case law and legal terminology. Year 12 were taught various study skills to maximise their HSC results with a focus on the two core topics of Human Rights and Crime. This study day equipped both Year 11 and 12 with beneficial skills and knowledge which will be advantageous to their overall course understanding and HSC results. Year 11 Geography On 13th March, Year 11 Geography spent a day at Gosling Creek Reserve investigating the biophysical interactions of the environment and conducting fieldwork activities. Students examined the different ecosystems at the site by testing the quality of the water and soil, constructing field sketches, quadrat surveys, vegetation transects and observing the diversity of plant and animal species. The data was used to determine which ecosystem at the Reserve was most at risk. These were valuable fieldwork skills that they were able to use when completing their Senior Geography Projects. On 13th and 14th of November, Year 12 Geography students spent two days at the Macquarie Marshes to supplement work done in the HSC unit, Ecosystems at Risk. Upon arrival, they were given an informative talk by David Houghton, an environmental educator and expert on the Marshes. Following the talk, students then spent the afternoon developing their skills in water testing, canoeing on the South Marsh, observing different land uses and the impacts of human activity on the Marshes. The hot weather even allowed for a quick dip in the water afterwards!
Day two began with a water wading tour through the North Marsh where students waded through the Marshes, experienced different parts of the ecosystem, learnt about different plant species, and observed the native wildlife in their natural environment. The site is also rich in artefacts from Aboriginal occupation, which students were able to observe. Year 12 were immersed in the cultural history of the Marshes, its ecological values, history of decline, water management and management of the Nature Reserve by National Parks. “It was really enjoyable and much more fun than I first expected” Olivia Basha “I liked seeing all the wildlife when canoeing and learning how the ecosystem functions” Mila Gower “It was really good fun and informative at the same time. I learnt a lot” Matthew Pell HSIE STAFF Ms Belinda Lee, Mrs Lisa Behan, Mrs Wendy Campbell, Mr Tom Fennell, Miss Chloe Finlayson, Ms Lisa Ford, Ms Laura Hegarty, Ms Kieron Hogan, Ms Lynelle Maguire, Ms Maggie Moon, Mr Ben Shore, Mr David Wickham Performing Arts Showcase The final Performing Arts Showcase for Dance and Drama students from Years 8-10 took place on Tuesday 4th December. Students performed admirably and showed their talent in various types of theatre including Montage, Verbatim, Mask and Video. Our Year 10 Dancers showed us their skills in choreographing works which reflected their understanding of their year group and the structures of Musical Theatre. Audiences were wowed with the talents of our students and their confidence in presenting topics that showed their growing awareness of the world around them.
