EuroSea Task 6.3 Multipurpose integration of BOOS & HELCOM networks Urmas Lips, Oliver Samlas, Stella-Theresa Stoicescu (TalTech) Jun She (DMI) HELCOM State & Conservation 14-2021, 06.05.2021
HELCOM Recommendation 10/1: ABNORMAL SITUATIONS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT It recommends that the Contracting Parties to the Helsinki Convention should: a) utilize the early warning system established according to HELCOM Recommendation 6/14 also for early warning of abnormal environmental situations; b) use appropriate methods for detecting and monitoring algal blooms; …
Copernicus marine service The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS; http://marine.copernicus.eu/) provides regular and systematic core reference information on the physical state of the oceans and regional seas. The services are based on remote sensing, in-situ observations with near real-time data delivery and operational models. The observations and forecasts produced by the service support all marine applications.

Heat waves Climatology of SST is calculated for each grid cell (1993-2019) Heat wave is defined if SST exceeds the climatological mean more than a threshold for at least 5 days The occurrence and intensity of heat waves will be estimated (seasonal and yearly values) Maps of heat waves (both parameters) are created and presented as the products Hobday, A. J. et al. (2016), A hierarchical approach to defining marine heatwaves, Prog. Ocean., 141, pp. 227-238, 10.1016/j.pocean.2015.12.014
Upwelling intensity SST deviation from the transect mean (from shore to shore) in each grid cell is calculated daily Upwelling is defined if SST deviation exceeds a threshold Occurrence and intensity of upwellings will be calculated for the summer season and the maps will presented Lehmann A, Myrberg K, Höflich K (2012) A statistical approach to coastal upwelling in the Baltic Sea based on the analysis of satellite data for 1990-2009. Challenges and plans Modelling • Quality of BGC model products is not good enough for assessment • Quality of BGC reanalysis is better than model-only products, but data for assimilation for the reanalysis are available with a time lag of about one year Planned improvements during the project: CTD data (including DO profiles) delivered and used for assimilation (PDAF) HELCOM data when available used for assimilation (PDAF)
