The Euro-Argo Research Infrastructure Objective : To coordinate and sustain the European contribution to the global Argo network (1/4 of the network) The Euro-Argo ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) was created in May 2014 In 2018, the ERIC involves 13 countries: 11 members, 1 observer and 1 candidate Euro-Argo is a Landmark in the ESFRI 2018 roadmap August 2020: 22% of the global network 2
Euro-Argo contribution to the network • Importance of EU contribution in the recent years (E-aims, MOCCA, AtlantOS, Euro-Argo-RISE, EuroSea) • Contributions from new countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland ) 3
Euro-Argo deployments per float type • The European manufacturer became one of the 2 main providers of Argo floats in the recent years 4
Euro-Argo performance • Life expectancy of European fleet improved in the past years thanks to improvement in technology and services set up at the Euro-Argo level to test floats before deployment 5
5 Year Evaluation 2014-2019 • Performed by the Scientifical and Technical Advisory Group • 5 year report and plan approved by the Council • Euro-Argo ERIC continue to be hosted by Ifremer/Brest EuroGOOS general Assembly September 2020 7
Main achievements over the last 5 years • ERIC membership extended from 9 (FI, FR, DE, GR, IT, NE, NO, PO, UK) to 12 countries (IR, SP, BG) • European contribution increased from 17% to 22% of the global network Next challenge is sustainability of network and development of the extension to new missions • Development of a European community in Argo Better visibility through communication activities Organization of events (biennial Users Workshops, Arvor/Provor technology training workshop in January 2020, etc.) 8
Main achievements over the last 5 years • New services for the members: Centralised float procurement/testing Tools for at-sea monitoring of the Argo fleet • Fostered links with other environmental Research Infrastructures [ENVRIplus – H2020] that continues within [ENVRI-FAIR-H2020] and [EuroSea-H2020] • The Euro-Argo ERIC proved its capacity in setting-up proposals for EU funded projects and coordinating them efficiently : MOCCA – EASME/EMFF [2015-2020] : demonstrating the capability for the ERIC to procure, deploy, monitor and process a fleet of 150 floats in partnership with members Euro-Argo RISE – H2020 [2019-2022] : Develop the maturity of the different elements of Argo network in Europe, technology, data infrastructure, service to users partnership with EU RI to move towards the Euro-Argo Strategy implementation • Capacity to extend the network to biogeochemistry, greater depths and specific regions through technological developments (higher latitudes, marginal seas) [E- AIMS - FP7, AtlantOS – H2020, EuroSea-H2020] 9
Euro-Argo Strategy for the next decade • Main Challenges: Maintain the Research Infrastructure Implement the network extension towards abyssal ocean (4000 to 6000m), biogeochemistry, partially ice covered areas and shallow waters regions • Euro-Argo developed its strategy in coherence with Argo international: Sustain the core T&S mission, with an emphasis in Western Boundary regions Monitor European marginal seas (Baltic, Mediterranean & Black seas) Monitor high latitudes Monitor the abyssal oceans: 1/5 of the global Argo-BGC network Monitor ecosystem parameters: 1/5 of the global Deep-Argo network Argo Global, full-depth, and multidisciplinary • Reference document: “Strategy for evolution of Argo in Europe” Core mission 2500 floats Deep mission 1100 floats (Euro-Argo ERIC, 2017) DOI: 10.13155/48526 BGC mission 1100 floats 10
Euro-Argo ERIC 5 year plan [2019-2024] • Ambitious plan that requires additional funds requiring new projects at national and European levels • The ERIC infrastructure strengthen the link between the national initiatives and with EC • Collaborative framework has been set up Euro-Argo GitHub for tools sharing and developments as well as common studies 11
EU projects contributing to the development of the Euro-Argo ERIC • MOCCA finish in August and have been important to set up Euro-Argo ERIC Service • Euro-Argo-RISE started in 2019 and contributes to all 5- year plan objectives • Envri-FAIR is in the continuity of ENVRI+ and will enhance the FAIRness of the ERIC data systems link to EOSC • Build on the achievement of AtlantOS, EuroSea will contribute to the objective 3 and 4 strengthening the links with other RIs and Stakholders • ERIC-FORUM support the development and operations of ERIC through development of best practises as well as interactions with EC More information in the 2019 Annual report that will be published end of September EuroGOOS general Assembly September 2020 12
Future challenges in the Research Infrastructure development • Network (Euro-Argo-RISE, MOCCA, National) Recommendations to operate Argo floats in all the areas identified in the strategy Recommendations for use of alternative sensors for both physical and BGC parameters and engagement with manufacturers for their implementation on existing float types Enhancement of Euro-Argo fleet behavior through monitoring facilities Sustain the funding for the core mission and develop sustain funding for the deep and BGC missions (national and EU) • Data Management (Euro-Argo-RISE, ENVRI-FAIR, MOCCA, National) Sustain the Core data processing infrastructure and extend it to the DEEP mission Organize of BGC data processing (NRT and DMQC) in Europe Contribute improvement of the Argo data management system implementing FAIR principles • Enhance services to users not only at the level of data services but also in terms of training, best practices developments, collaborative frameworks , outreach … • Euro-Argo within the European landscape of Rs aims at strengthening the links with the EU RIs at the level of sensors , Ocean Observing System design , Network implementation (deployment and recovery) , FAIR data services to users … 13
