Vo1 202110 October, 2021 ETZ CHAIM ROOTS 2 From The Rabbi The other night, during the Torah Reading rubric of our virtual Simchat Torah celebration I asked, as is our custom, “Does anyone have any good news they would like to share with the community?” Rabbi Leslie spoke up (and I may be paraphrasing), “Thank G-d this is the end of the Fall Festival Season!” Yes, it has been a glorious, but lengthy Fall Festival Season! We have joined together to hear the shofar on Rosh Ha- shana, fasted the 25 hours of Yom Kippur, waved the lulav and endured the elements throughout Succot, said Yizkor on Sh’mini Atzeret, and took a musical journey through the Five Books of Moses in celebration of Simchat Torah. That’s a lot! But now we enter the month of Cheshvan, the only month of the Hebrew year without any holidays (other than Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh). Our Sages have dubbed the current Hebrew month of Cheshvan, “Mar-Cheshvan,” Bitter Cheshvan. They did this to communicate the lack of holidays, as mentioned above, and because during this month the days become shorter, and the weather generally turns cold. Viewed from another angle, however, the month of Cheshvan provides a balance to our lives. Cheshvan represents a needed recovery (for many of us) from the long Fall Festival Season. The month also brings the opportunity to apply the lessons of the Fall Festival Season as Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Succot, Sh’mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Amongst their other lessons, all these holy days teach the value of community. When the temperature dips the warmth of community makes a difference. When the world becomes a bit darker, the To- rah we share lights our path and brightens our world. Our family of families is here for us in times of trouble. Our community helps us celebrate the wonderful moments of life. Our congregation allows us to share the joys of Jewish life the way our Torah envisions, among others. The pres- ence of our fellow congregants makes the wine taste sweeter and the challah just better! Now is the time to concentrate on how we can become more deeply involved in one another’s lives: to worship together, to learn Torah together, to eat together, to socialize together, to serve the Most High together, to lift one another to higher and higher plains of holiness. Mar-Cheshvan? Nah, a time to enjoy the warmth of community; enjoy! SHOPPIG FOR SHABBAT We need helpers (men/women) for the Friday & Saturday services. Please call the Office 732-251-1119 ADULT BAR/BAT MITZVAH CLASS Are you interested in joining a new Adult Bar/Bat mitzvah class. Please call Rabbi Levi or the Office if you are interested.
Vo1 202110 October, 2021 ETZ CHAIM ROOTS 3 LEARN TORAH BLESSINGS WITH RABBI LEVY Do you want to learn the songs of our Kabbalat Service? Have you ever wanted to practice the torah bless- ings or learn the blessing for the Haftorah reading in Hebrew? Now you can hear our own Rabbi Levy chanting these prayers and blessings from our website. https:// etzchaimmtjc.org/learning/learn-blessings-songs Bikur Cholim means “visiting the sick”. Some authorities maintain that Bikur Cholim is one of the 613 commandments of the Torah, while others hold it as a rabbinic command, derived from “Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Lev. 19:18) A group of your fellow congregants would like to visit you or your loved one if homebound or ill. If you are interested in arranging a visit, contact Rabbi Levy or Margery Estrin at 732 251-1119. Congregation Etz Chaim Monroe Twp Jewish Center Shop With Scrip www.ShopWithScrip.com

Vo1 202110 October, 2021 ETZ CHAIM ROOTS 7 President’s Message Dear Members and Friends, The past month has been a whirlwind for a lot of us. Celebrating the High Holidays felt more special this year because of worship- ping in person. My favorite part is our meaningful and sometimes funny conversations as we walk to the lake for tashlich. I hope some of your new year goals is to continue to be a part of our community. I look forward to seeing most of you participate in our community yard sale, either as a vendor, or potential customer. You could just hang out with us that day. Also, please do not forget to submit your Kol Nidre pleas. If you have not yet received a pledge card, they will be sent out soon. Do not throw it away. It is a mitzvot to donate to Congregation Etz Chaim. Hoping we all got sealed for good this year! Warm Regards, Laura Easy ways to earn money for Etz Chaim Bring us your old inkjet and toner cartridges. We’ll send them to a recycler who will pay us for each one. We cannot accept damaged or re-manufactured cartridges. We can not accept Ink cartridges unless they are from the original manufacturer; ex: HP, Brother, Cannon. No one accepts them and the secretary has to take them to Staples. Staples only takes 20 per month and there is an abundance of these cartridges in the office. Use our Amazon link on our webpage. If you go to Amazon via our website, mtjc.org, we will receive a percentage of your purchase. We do not have visibility to what you purchase or who is purchasing, so your privacy is intact. From the Treasurer and Financial Secretary: All checks for the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund have to be made out to “Rabbi Levy’s Discretionary Fund”, not to Congregation Etz Chaim. The Rabbi has his own account to manage his discretionary fund and writing the check to Etz Chaim, causes a delay in providing the funds to the Rabbi and increases the work of the financial team to track this and to write the Rabbi additional checks. If you have any questions, please contact Marilyn via email – finsecy@mtjc.org
Vo1 202110 October, 2021 ETZ CHAIM ROOTS 8 Volunteers 6eeded!!! Our beloved Congregation Etz Chaim is in need of... YOU. Our house of worship, our family of families is run by volunteers. A very small number of volunteers. I believe if you want to feel good then you should do good. For quite a while volunteering at our Temple helped me feel good. Lately it’s been harder because with so few of us, it can feel overwhelming. Just a few more volunteers would make a huge difference. I know other volunteers share this sentiment. Our small group is committed to Congregation Etz Chaim, and will continue to work for our community. But it is getting very hard. I love that I found the only full service synagogue in Monroe. I need Congregation Etz Chaim. I need it to nourish my spirit, to help me raise my children Jewish, to learn and teach rituals, and to be there for celebrations and times of mourning. Please think about why you need Congregation Etz Chaim as I am writing to tell you that Congregation Etz Chaim needs you. If you have any questions, call me at 908-812-8959 after 4 pm M-F, all day Saturday and Sunday. To all our members: During this difficult time, we realize some members have lost all or some of their income. If you are experiencing financial challenges during this time, please reach out to me to discuss options. We do not turn people away for financial reasons. All discussions will remain confidential. If you are currently paying by check, we ask that you consider paying online through our website. Many of our members are already using this system successfully. Paying online will lower the amount of mail that Rose has to handle. Paying online via electronic check is free and your payment will be recorded automati- cally against your account and will be deposited directly into the Temple’s bank account. You can also opt to pay with a credit card, which will also lower the work generated, but you will have to pay a convenience fee of 2.5% of the amount paid. No one at Etz Chaim will have access to see your bank account or credit card numbers. This is all done via a secure payment processor. Please consider signing onto your account and paying online to see how easy it is. Your account is the email address you provided us. You must be signed on to pay directly to your account. Please be aware this online payment method is not the same as signing onto your bank website and asking for your bank to make an ‘online payment.’ This method results in a check being mailed to our office as we are not connected directly to any banks for direct payment. If you have any questions, please contact Marilyn via email – finsecy@mtjc.org

10 Vo1 202110 October, 2021 ETZ CHAIM ROOTS Cornerstone Foundation 6ews Since its formal inception in Nov 2017, we have received generous donations from over 25 mem- ber and non-member families ranging from $18 to $25,000. As promised, Cornerstone funds are being used for major projects, general operating expenses and we are retaining funds in reserve to build a cushion of funds for future use. The project funds have been used to replace the vinyl flooring in the rear of the sanctuary in the classroom space, for repairing the driveway and this year will be used for the HVAC and exterior repairs (along with the special assessment). In the coming year or two, depending on donations, we hope to make improvements to the bimah. We would like to replace the Torah reading table, the two podiums, the chairs and to make the bimah itself more accessible to those who have some dif- ficulty walking by making the stairs and ramp more compliant. Donations in any amount are welcome. You will find the brochure pages here in Roots or you can make a direct donation on our website.
