Welcome to Canning Arts Group Canning Arts Group (CAG) is a self-funded not for profit community-based organisation which has been in existence for over 50 years. CAG provides a vibrant arts hub in the Canning area and is a great place to have fun, improve your skills or learn some new ones. Courses are offered for adults, children and Persons with a Disability. CAG offers classes through four term programs each year in a wide variety of areas for adults including pottery (wheel and hand work), painting (all mediums), glass slumping, framing and other arts and crafts. Throughout the year, CAG also offers a range of shorter Workshops in a wide variety of areas and information about these can be found on the CAG website. For children aged 7 to 16 years, CAG offers term programs in both pottery and in a variety of arts programs designed to assist children in learning new skills. Contained within this booklet are the Term 1 2022 Programs for both adults and children and we welcome you to explore your creative interests in a fun and supportive environment. Art Classes Adult Oil Painting 8 weeks with Lawrence Easton Monday 7 February – Monday 28 March 2022 In this class we will learn to produce clean, fresh, light- filled paintings & avoid dull, flat, muddy colours by con- trolling colour mixing and brushwork. We will explore composition & design & how to use them for best effect. You will mostly be working on your own paintings of choice but there will also be occasional exercises to help develop your eye, technical proficiency, accuracy and speed along with demonstrations and discussions on topics of interest or particular techniques. Mondays 12.30 – 3.30pm Cost: $220 members | $240 non members Watercolour Botanicals 8 weeks & Landscapes with Maimunah Abdullah Tuesday 8 February – Tuesday 29 March 2022 In this class, the focus will be in producing accurate depictions of real-life botanical specimens. We will explore recreating colour from nature, tonal val- ues and colour theory and develop technical proficiency in drawing and watercolour painting. Art Classes Adult Watercolour 8 weeks with Maureen Lipa Monday 7 February – Monday 28 March 2022 In this class we will explore both traditional and exper- imental techniques through a series of playful weekly projects which will encourage you to develop your own creative vision. Each class will include an interactive demonstration and a lively discussion all in a warm and supportive atmo- sphere. Suitable for all skill levels. Wednesdays 9 am - 12 noon Cost: $220 members | $240 non members Art of Abstraction 8 weeks with Stephanie Reisch Wednesday 9 February – Wednesday 30 March 2022 A mixed media course that guides students through the various steps and processes towards abstracting an image, both visually and conceptually. Develop expression and perspective, experiment with wet and dry media and unconventional supports. Wednesdays 12.30 – 3.30pm Cost: $220 members | $240 non members
Art Classes Adult Exploring Acrylics 8 weeks with Peta Zeller Thursday 10 February – Thursday 31 March 2022 This acrylic painting class is an opportunity to continue developing skills with acrylic paint, to see the possibili- ties and a range of outcomes with this fun and versatile medium. The lessons continue to develop knowledge in tone, color, brushwork, texture and composition, where the student will provide their own personal drawing or pho- tographic material to work with to produce artwork with assistance from Peta. This painting course would be ideal for those who have completed a Colour Workshop with Peta or ongoing stu- dents from Peta’s previous classes. Thursdays 9.00am – 12.00 noon Cost: $220 members | $240 non members Join Us and Become a Member of Canning Arts Group! As a member of Canning Arts, you will join a group of enthusiastic artists, including potters, painters, glass artists, printmakers and more! You will also enjoy discounted classes and workshops and use of the facilities and equipment at the Centre. Members also have the unique opportunity to enter their artwork in Members’ Exhi- bitions in the Centre Gallery and to display and sell work in various sales that are held throughout the year at community venues. As a community organisation, Canning Arts Group provides a social and supportive environment for artists of all ages and skill levels.
Pottery Classes Adult Pottery - Advanced 8 weeks with Chris Elliott Monday 7 February – Monday 28 March 2022 In this class you will have the opportunity of utilising the experience of a very astute and knowledgeable teacher to assist you in identifying and ironing out any technical issues you may be experiencing. Learn how to finish and present pots for sale and take your pottery to new levels. This class will cover aspects of wheel work, hand build- ing and glazing. Mondays 9.00am – 12.00 noon Cost: $235 members | $260 non members Pottery - Beginners 8 weeks with Chris Elliott Monday 7 February – Thursday 31 March 2022 Have fun, be creative and learn the basics skills for creat- ing pots on the wheel as well as learning the basics for hand building and glazing. Learn the different aspects of clays and the effect of kiln firing on different clays. An introduction to a lifetime of fun with a very experienced potter and tutor. The cost of firing and glazing will be covered in this class; however participants will be required to purchase their own clay (available from CAG). Pottery Classes Adult Pottery - Beginners 8 weeks with Maimunah Abdullah Tuesday 8 February – Tuesday 29 March 2022 Come along and learn the basics skills for creating pots on the wheel, hand building and glazing, or extend the knowledge you already have. Maimunah has over 25 years of experience to share and you will learn many techniques along the way. The cost of firing and glaz- ing will be covered in this class; however participants will be required to purchase their own clay (available from CAG). Tuesdays 6.30 – 9.30pm Cost: $235 members | $260 non members Pottery - Beginners 8 weeks with Narelle Fulwood - Beginners Wednesday 8 February – Wednesday 30 March 2022 Have you ever wanted to learn how to throw pots on a pottery wheel? Or would you like to refine what you can already do? Come and join us as we collect essential skills in both wheel work and hand building to release your creativity into your own works of art. Pottery Classes Children Pottery - (Ages 7+) 8 weeks with Narelle Fulwood Tuesday 8 February – Wednesday 30 March 2022 Get your hands into clay on this discovery journey of col- lecting essential skills to produce all sorts of interesting pottery. We will spend time “throwing” on the wheel as well as making a variety of hand built projects. Release your imagination and have some fun. . Tuesdays 4.00 – 5.30pm or Wednesdays 4.00 – 5.30pm Cost $165 Pottery 8 weeks with Lynne Carlin Saturday 12 February – Saturday 2 April 2022 The children in Lynne’s classes make a range of hand- built works of art. Methods of construction and common terms used in ceramic ware will be covered, and students will also gain a good understanding of simple firing tech- niques. Where possible children’s work is glazed (under supervision). A two-week project mid-term allows for a more complex subject. Students learn a range of tech- niques which helps to deepen their knowledge. We also have lots of fun. Saturdays (Ages 7+) 9.00 – 10.30am or Saturdays (Ages 10+) 11.00am – 12.30pm Cost $165
Art Classes Children Art ( ages 7+) 8 weeks with Chaya Warusapperuma Monday 7 February – Monday 28 March 2022 In our Canning Arts Classes, children here learn not only various artistic skills but also working with others and thriving under a friendly class environment. By working with a variety of materials, including acrylic paintings and drawing, they get a wider understanding about the basics of the art world, increasing their imagination and creativity. Here, the children are also able to experiment with different shapes, colours, and lines, which further improve their knowledge of art and is a great beginning step for them. Monday 4.00 – 5.30pm Cost: $135 Art ( ages 7+) 8 weeks with Bernie Taylor Monday 7 February – Thursday 31 March 2022 This class is designed to help students with the fundamen- tals of drawing and painting. Across the term classes will cov- er skills such as how to use drawing and composition guides, various drawing techniques such as hatching and stippling etc., techniques for drawing from life, how to create perspec- tive drawings, various painting and brush techniques, mixing paint colours and colour theory, and the practice of seeing and assessing artwork. These skills are covered through a range of practical exercises focussed on creating drawings and paintings that the kids can be excited at having created! Art Classes Children Art (ages 7+) 8 weeks with Michelle Culnane Thursday 10 February – Thursday 31 March 2022 In this class students will learn to use a variety of mate- rials and techniques such as lead pencil, oil pastel, soft pastel & paints, watercolour and acrylic paint. They will explore colour, art and design and take home beautiful art works. During classes we will be learning tips on how to achieve the best results. The classes are fun and relax- ing, the best way to learn to love art, and start a passion. Thursdays 4.00 – 5.30pm Cost: $135 Cartooning (ages 7+) 8 weeks with Tim Wilson Wednesday 9 February – Wednesday 30 March 2022 With over 20 years experience teaching cartooning for kids, Tim is offering a course with a huge variety of activ- ities that will promote drawing skills and are always lots of fun. The course includes popular warm-up worksheets, car- toon games, imagination workouts, colour-in competi- tions, as well as cartoon craft activities. With no experience required, kids can work happily at their own ability level. Wednesdays 4.00 – 5.30pm Cost: $135
Art Classes Children Art (ages 7+) 8 weeks with Bridget Seaton Friday 11 February – Friday 1 April 2022 During the term children typically work within the framework of 1 or 2 themes. Themes range from por- traiture, still life, animals and birds, cityscapes and land- scapes, plants and natural forms. Generally, a project will commence with drawing skills and direct observation drawing is encouraged whenever possible. After working on drawing skills children will move into colour work exploring the subject through watercolour painting and colour pencil. Emphasis is placed on paint handling and learning about colour. At times children will have the opportunity to work in mixed media with materials provided from the teacher (pastels, collage etc). Although observation is the starting point, projects often include an element of abstraction, self expression and imaginative work. Fridays 4.00 – 5.30pm Cost: $135 Learn Create Socialise
Art Classes Children Painting 8 weeks with Migara Ramanayake (by invitation) Saturday 12 February – Saturday 2 April 2022 In this class, students are exposed to experimentation with colour theory, mixing colours, and making different colours using a limited palette. Students will learn the techniques for painting with acrylics, watercolours, and dry pastels, to create a finished artwork. (Enrolment criteria applies) Saturdays 1.30 – 3pm Cost: $135 Drawing ( ages 8+) 8 weeks with Migara Ramanayake Saturday 12 February – Saturday 2 April 2022 The drawing class is focused on accuracy, composition, and effective shading. Students will learn how to con- struct an image from basic shapes and forms, and how to shade them effectively with the correct values. Saturdays 3.15 - 4. 45pm Cost: $135
Art Classes Children Art 8 weeks with John Ilmenstein Friday 11 February – Saturday 2 April 2022 Beginner classes involve set exercises as children are taught the fundamentals of realistic drawing along with tone and colour theory over the course of one term. Each class explores growing a collection of mark mark- ing techniques and different mediums including various grades of pencil, charcoal and pastels. Weekly projects involve gesture and contour drawing, positive and nega- tive space awareness and perspective. Returning students are encouraged to challenge their personal skill level, reinforcing what has previously been learnt. Individual projects are considered and developed over several sessions. Students are exposed to an aware- ness of Surrealism, Expressionism and many modernist artists are used as inspirations to explore beyond realis- tic drawing.
