On 30th May, 2020, history was made as two astronauts were launched into orbit from American soil for the first time in nearly a decade. Elon Musk’s space exploration company ‘SpaceX’ is the first company to send passengers to orbit on a privately made vehicle. Bob and Doug lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida inside Robert (Bob) L. Behnken a spacecraft called the Crew Dragon, an automated (mostly automatic) capsule designed to take people to and from Douglas (Doug) G. Hurley the International Space Station.
Watch a clip of the launch using this link (or click the image) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52867494 It is the fourth video down the page with the caption, “Go Nasa, go SpaceX. God speed Bob and Doug.”
It gave me goose bumps! Tomorrow, you are going to write a descriptive piece about the launch. Today you will plan by creating a word and phrase bank to help your writing tomorrow.
In a moment, you are going to watch the clip again, but this time you are going to make notes IMAGINING that YOU WERE THERE, using only POSITIVE (good/happy) vocabulary. What action was happening? Think: What inner thoughts What could you see? were you having? As I watched the SpaceX What could you hear? Crew Dragon Launch… What could you feel (touch)? How did you feel (emotions)? What could you taste? What could you smell? What did you say?

Now get a pen or coloured pencil. You may have mixed emotions. This time choose some (slightly) NEGATIVE vocabulary, particularly focusing on the following areas… Think: What inner thoughts were you having? As I watched e.g. Will they be okay? the SpaceX Crew Dragon Launch… How did you feel (emotions)? e.g. anxious, nervous What could you feel (touch)? e.g. racing heart, goose bumps,
The capsule was propelled into orbit on top of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which is partially reusable. After separating from the Crew Dragon, the Falcon 9 completed an amazing pinpoint landing (just 9 minutes after lift-off) on the SpaceX drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You," which was stationed a few hundred miles off the Florida coast. JUST FOR FUN, watch the Falcon 9 safely land in this clip. It looks like a computerized scene from a movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm__ZSLc6Is

Yesterday we created a word bank. Today, you are going to write a descriptive piece about the launch. In your green exercise book, write today’s date and the title… English – Rocket Launch Can you think of any synonyms to improve your word bank? You could use a thesaurus. Find any nouns and create expanded noun phrases.
Start with what you can see. Pick something from your plan. Create a noun phrase, then build your sentence. e.g. On the horizon, the immense structure stands proud, a futuristic beast preparing to take flight. Can you include some figurative language? Alliteration / simile / metaphor ?
Now choose something from your plan about what you can hear. Create a noun phrase, then build your sentence. e.g. Here, at a safe distance, excited chatter fills the air as an audience of thousands eagerly awaits the scientific spectacle ahead. Choose your words carefully for maximum impact. Make sure they make sense!
Now choose something from your plan about your inner thoughts. What are you thinking? It could be an exclamation or a rhetorical question. Or both! e.g. We’re watching history happen!
