1. STUDIO HANDBOOK Please ensure you have read the studio handbook (https://www.generationdance.net.au/timetable-feeschedule- studiohandbook). This contains all general information and policies regarding the school. If you have any general questions, not related to the EEP program, you can generally find the information here or contact the office. 3
2. WHAT IS THE EEP PROGRAM? Our EEP program is an elite training program for dancers who have a desire to achieve, strive to excel, and develop their dance and performing art technique and performance quality to a very high standard. Within this program dancers work individually in technique classes but also as a team in their competition troupe and choreography classes. Students in the EEP program may have the goal of becoming a professional dancer, performer, or dance teacher. It is also for students who have the ability and desire to achieve high standards of technique and performance throughout their dance training but not necessarily want to continue as a career. This stream of classes encourages and teaches discipline, time management, resilience, teamwork, perseverance, and commitment. With these come pride, sense of achievement, happily balanced and well-rounded children and above all, highly skilled dancers. Our EEP program covers all genres of dance and performing arts. We have an elite classical ballet sub program as well as classes, exams and performance opportunities in tap, jazz (all styles), lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, acrobatics, musical theatre, and voice. Our EEP program is not suitable for any dancer who is wanting to learn, dance and perform only as a soloist. We are preparing our students for the reality of the professional world where the ability to work as a team is essential and will play a huge role in our students’ success long after they leave our EEP program. We do however have our dancers’ best interests at heart and are open minded, so we allow freedom to participate in approved workshops and external classes, plus work with external choreographers. This program is an elite level training program that will deliver results and holistically and organically get your dancer to where they need and want to be. We accept beginner dancers in the Under 7 and Under 9 age groups. From Under 11’s dancers must have previous training to certain levels but may also be accepted into the program if successful in their audition. Our Elite Classical Ballet sub program commences at AICD Grade 5 ballet and entry is by audition only. Auditions will include an interview where dancers will have the opportunity to tell us why they want to be in our programs, their understanding of classical ballet and its importance and hopefully explain how hard they are willing to work. Students who receive Highly Commended or Honours in their 2021 ballet exam do not need to audition for ECB as that is automatic selection. Every child in the EEP program gets treated equally and fairly and all deserve the attention of their teachers. Limiting class numbers means teachers have the time to work individually within group classes. All students deserve the opportunity to learn, improve and thrive with the support from the Generation Dance staff and those around them. 4

We welcome our dancers to stay with us for as long as they want to, there is no maximum age for the Open Age EEP program. If a dancer retains a high level of technique and can commit to the requirements of the program then we would love for them to continue their dance journey with us. Those dancers wishing to move on to tertiary dance training after Year 12 must have an individual program set in collaboration with their Generation Dance classes to ensure they are physically and mentally ready for the audition process and the transition into full time dance studies. This must be discussed with the EEP director and each term the plan will be reviewed with the director, dancer and their parents. 9
4. COMMITMENT Commitment to the EEP program is for a full year. When you accept a place in this program, it is important students and parents understand the pressure put on other competition troupe members when a dancer chooses to withdraw or cannot attend a scheduled competition throughout the year. Our withdrawal policy applies to EEP and ECB students meaning there are no refunds on any fees or monies paid and notice must be given. Turn up! Attendance to all classes is essential. Our teachers can’t teach your dancer if they are not in class. The theory, analogies, anatomical information, technique fundamentals plus the choreography and musicality is given from teachers in class and our dancers need to hear and practice this to fully understand what is being taught. Learning off any videos taken during a missed class is helpful to catchup, but essentially missing the class is what is detrimental to the dancer’s growth and development, so we are extremely strict on attendance. Events and workshops scheduled on the TEAM APP calendar are compulsory. All technique classes are individual based, within a group environment. Missing a technique class will only affect the students individual progress, which in turn will affect their performance and examination results. Attendance to the weekly competition troupe classes and scheduled choreographic workshops is compulsory and missing these may result in removal from dance or the section of the dance that is being learnt or polished, if this happens on a regular basis the dancer will be removed from the EEP program entirely. Being in a Competition Troupe is the ultimate team sport and the teams progress is greatly affected when members are missing. The 3 competition troupe lessons before each competition are compulsory. If you cannot commit to your lessons, then the EEP program is not for you, and we suggest enrolling in the recreational stream. MOVITAE We use an APP called Movitae to upload videos which assists the students practice at home, in between their weekly lessons. Using this app and spending time at home practicing is a compulsory part of the EEP program. 10
5. SACE DANCE, VET COURSES & TEACHER TRAINING We offer SACE Dance, in partnership with Thebarton Community College, for dancers in Year 10, 11 or 12. Ideally Year 10 students study Stage 1 and Year 11 students study Stage 2, leaving some options open for Year 12 subjects. We also offer CERT III and Cert IV in Dance and Dance Teaching through EmpowerDance and ATOD and this can also contribute to a student’s SACE and ATAR scores. We offer exceptional teacher training through the VET courses mentioned above grouped with voluntary and paid workplace experience and are proud to offer this pathway to paid work for our dancers, especially those who want to become dance teachers. STUDENT TEACHER For students in Under 13 EEP who have passed their Grade 3 AICD Ballet Exam and Bronze Star Jazz and/or Tap Exam. This is voluntary workplace experience, supervised by a senior teacher. ASSISTANT TEACHER For EEP students 16yrs + who have passed their Intermediate AICD Ballet exam and Gold Star Jazz and/or Tap Exam. Junior Teachers must hold the Cert. III in Assistant Dance Teaching or be enrolled in it. This is paid workplace experience and teachers are employed as permanent part time employees under an employment agreement and the fitness industry award wage. Assistant teachers are supervised by Senior Teachers. JUNIOR TEACHER For EEP students (current or retired) 18yrs + who have passed their Advanced 1 AICD Ballet Exam and Elementary Jazz and/or Tap exam. Teachers must hold the Cert IV in Dance Teaching and Management or be enrolled in it. This is paid employment and teachers are employed as permanent part time employees under an employment agreement and the fitness industry award wage. Teachers work under the coordinator of the stream they are teaching however are in charge of their own classes. 11
6. COMMUNICATION Our office staff are available during office hours to help in any way – info@generationdance.net.au or 0412089457. Each Competition Troupe also has a troupe manager who will introduce themselves at the start of the year and is your first point of contact for anything related to performances and costuming. All queries regarding classes, fees, administration, teachers etc must be done through the office. We also use an app called TEAM APP for all EEP communication regarding workshop and competition/performance dates, reminders, and general chit chat. Please download TEAM APP from your app store and set up an account. You then need to search for GD Competition Troupes and EEP and then add yourself to the group that reflects your child’s Competition Troupe class. Please also make sure you have your notifications turned on for the APP. Your troupe manager will follow this up with you at the start of the year and check you are receiving notifications. If your child is of an age where independence is developing it is extremely important that both parent and student is on TEAM APP and receiving the information. It is important parents still play a role in helping our dancers prepare for performances, in regard to costume requirements, hair and makeup, arrival times etc. Please find a happy medium with your child so you are encouraging independence but also offering support for when they require it. It doesn’t hurt for a parent to double check things even with our older dancers. 12
7. PERFORMANCES AND COMPETITIONS All EEP students are members of the Competition Troupe for their age group. This is a compulsory part of learning in the EEP program as dance is a performance art. A dancer’s technique is extremely important but, will only get them so far. It’s a dancers performance quality and confidence, artistry, musicality and how the dancer makes their audience feel that will define them as a performer and this is developed through competition troupe and performing. If teaching is the end goal, dancers and teachers need to have the knowledge and skills to be able to choreograph and teach performance work to your students who may want to be professional dancers and performers. The TEAM APP schedule will be updated by the start of Term 1, 2022, with all compulsory performance events in 2022, which includes our End of Year Showcase’s. Competition troupe items will be choreographed for best chance of a good result at competitions, this is at the discretion of the choreographer and teacher. The selection and positioning of dancers on the stage will reflect the stronger dancers in the troupe. Not all dancers will be chosen to perform each dance, the choreographer will block the item 3 lessons prior to the competition with those dancers who have learnt the choreography, are working to a high standard of execution and have great performance quality and teamwork abilities. This means some troupes will have dancers working as understudies, meaning they learn the work but have not be chosen to perform on stage. All dancers perform in our End of Year showcase and routines are inclusive of all EEP team members. With performing comes costuming. We have a great hire service available and parents hire all troupe costumes for the year. Absolutely everything is done for you and the cost is minimal compared to purchasing outright. Please see the fees and payments section for more information. All dancers and parents representing Generation Dance at an event must follow our Code of Conduct at all times. Please read the following personal statement from Generation Dance Director, Jodie Freeman “My pet hate is discussing results at competitions and using excuses as to why a child or troupe didn't place or didn’t place where you thought they should. Competitions are subjective and an adjudicator may not have loved the dance (choreography), the music, the costume etc. The next adjudicator may love it and you will get a completely different result even though you danced the same dance! All dancers work extremely hard, some harder than others and a dance competition will never be fair when you are relying on one person’s opinion. Great technique always stands out and in my eyes is far more important than anything else. Performing is a chance to develop your performance skills, confidence and become comfortable on the stage. It is not about winning, because 1st place at one competition could not place at another, and vice versa. 13
Competitions are a learning tool to help create professional, hardworking, and humble dancers with hopefully a long-lasting career in the industry. Those who only feel accomplished with a 1st place at a subjective dance competition may not succeed in the industry later in life. The dance industry can at times be harsh and gruelling and a professional dancer won’t succeed if they haven't developed the important skills to deal with this. I’m sure this is also just not the dance industry but many others. No one rewards a professional dancer with a trophy after their performances. Instead, they will receive notes on what the directors want them to continue to develop and then the directors want to see these notes are taken on board and corrected. Encourage your children to work hard and to strive to reach their goals, and whatever the result know that it is not your child's final result in their dance journey. All our students should be extremely proud of themselves after performing any routine and use any constructive criticism to better their next performance and work harder in class. If you would like any 'dance acrobatics' put in your child's routine I am more than happy to do so IF the choreography allows. Upon discussion with our Acrobatics teacher, I will add in anything that has been ok'd by a qualified acrobatic teacher and the student must attend our acrobatics classes. I do not believe choreography with acrobatics places higher than those without, again this is up to the adjudicator. I will not allow any student to perform in an inappropriate costume nor choreograph inappropriate dance moves. All dances performed by Generation Dance student will be age appropriate and costumed the same way. I would like all parents to understand the difference between being supportive and being invested. Trust me when I say myself and the Generation Dance teachers are 100% invested in your children. We understand you invest a lot of time and money and give up plenty to allow your child this opportunity, we see this, we understand this, and we say thank you, however all your children need from you is to be 100% supportive and let us do the rest. Please remember my ethos and expectations around dance comps because I will not tolerate anything else. I will be very blunt and say if your competitive nature does not agree with the above then we are not the school for you.” 14
8. EXAMINATIONS Examinations are an important part of a dancer’s journey; this is the only official way to document a dancers training and extremely important for acceptance into tertiary/VET full time dance courses and dance teaching courses. Enrolment in our exam classes is not compulsory, but all EEP students are encouraged to enrol and sit their examinations. Those dancers attending these classes will progress beyond those who don’t, this is because of the technical focus of these classes. Students do not learn any performance work in their exam classes. We teach the Borovansky method of Classical Ballet which is delivered by the Australian Institute of Classical Dance. Most exams take a full year to learn and prepare for however once a dancer reaches the major levels (Intermediate, Advanced 1 & Advanced 2), 2 years of study may be required before sitting the exam. The Advanced 2 exam is open to students by invitation only and students must have received Highly Commended or Honours for their Advanced 1 exam. All dancers in Grade 5 ballet and above must be a part of our Elite classical ballet sub program. We teach the Tap and Jazz Moves syllabus from the Australian Teachers of Dancing. Most exams take a full year to learn and prepare for. Students past Elementary Seal Tap and Intermediate Jazz levels will learn their exam work by booking private lessons. It is at the discretion of the class teacher and EEP Director to hold a student back who is not technically ready to sit their exam, which could be because the dancer hasn’t applied themselves to learn and polish the work throughout the year or missing lessons due to injury or illness. We will only hold a student back if it is in their best interest and to ensure foundations are being learnt, developed, and executed before moving up levels. If the foundations aren’t secure, it is very hard to build upon that to successfully pass higher grades. If your dancer is technically ready for their exam, as advised by the teacher, the exam itself is not optional and students do not get to choose if they participate. Our exam classes are not grouped by age, but by ability. You move up levels by successfully passing exams each year. A new student starting at Generation Dance will be placed into an appropriate exam level after an assessment. To begin your ATOD teacher training at Generation Dance you must have successfully passed your Gold Star exam (Cert III in Assistant Dance Teaching) and then Elementary exam (Cert IV in Dance Teaching and Management). To begin your AICD teacher training you must have successfully passed your Advanced 1 exam. All exams are held in October and/or November at our studio. We are given exam dates by the relevant dance associations and have no say in when these are. Exam can be scheduled 7 days a week and most commonly are during school hours. Exam fees range from $70-$150 per exam. Majority of this cost goes directly to the relevant dance association however Generation Dance does add on a small amount per exam to cover incidentals such as studio hire, examiners transport and food and teachers wages on exam day. If you would like an accurate cost of each exam for your child, please contact the office. 15
9. SCHEDULE Please follow the term timetable for weekly technique, exam, and competition troupe lessons, which follow the dance term dates as shown in the studio handbook and on our website (calendar). Please follow the schedule and events on TEAM APP for all workshop and competition/performance dates. For choreography workshops, we will confirm closer to the date which genre is being taught as for some genres not all dancers will be required. We will try to have all events and workshops scheduled in TEAM APP by start of Term 1, 2022. However, we are relying on competitions to be organised which is sometimes not the case. DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING THAT MEANS YOUR DANCER WILL MISS LESSONS IN THE DANCE TERMS. We will never enter competitions or hold lessons on long weekends or during school holidays, except for the Sept/Oct School Holidays. Please utilise this time for family holidays or events you can control. Obviously, you can’t control certain events (weddings/funerals/school camps etc) so when these clashes arise it is important you speak to the EEP Director as soon as possible. The 3 troupe lessons before each competition are compulsory. If we do need to schedule anything last minute, we will always ask families for their input regarding commitment clashes to ensure it works for everyone. 16
10. FEES & PAYMENTS Your term fee invoice will show the charge for your weekly classes. All other EEP costs are charged to your EEP account. This includes, but is not limited to - Choreography workshops (this is charged at $11 per hour per dancer – no further discounts) Costume hire (prices from $33 each costume for yearly hire) Competition entry fees and competitor registration (this is the troupe competition entry fee divided between the number of dancers participating. Most competitions all have a dancer registration fee which ranges between $10 and $30) Showcase participation fee (see fee schedule) Examination entry fees (will be posted on Team APP once the exam fees are released by relevant associations) We have set up a separate bank account for these extra charges (not the Generation Dance fee payment account). Parents can pay into this bank account at any stage to ensure their account has sufficient funds when any of the above charges are needing to be deducted. You can set up a weekly, fortnightly or monthly transfer to ensure your account has the required minimum funds throughout the year. Each troupe member will receive bank account details and notification of this upon enrolment. Each EEP member is required to have $200 balance in their account by 1st of February 2022. You can contact the office at any time to see a copy of your account and we will also send an end of year statement. GD troupe merchandise can all be purchased from the Generation Dance website. EEP students must have a GD Team Jacket. Shoes, stockings, hair accessories and makeup can all be purchased from our uniform shop ‘The Perfect Costume’. For an approximate cost of the extra charges (listed above – not including exam entry fees) this was the average yearly charge for each dancer, on top of their term fees, in 2021 – Under 7 - $350 approx. Under 9 - $450 approx. Under 11 - $550 approx. Under 13 / Under 16 / Open Age - $650 approx. Most parents set up a weekly or fortnightly transfer into their account to cover the costs, instead of having to pay in a lump sum. 17
11. PRIVATE COACHING We welcome all Generation Dance EEP students to have the opportunity to perform solos, duos or trios at competitions. Whilst troupe and exam work is most important, we want all students the chance to extend their skills, in both technique and performance individually. However, this is a huge commitment for both dancer and parent/s. Dancers can also book private lessons to work on general technique, troupe or exam work. Competition routines - There are rules which must be adhered to, these have been developed to ensure fairness to all and understanding of the commitment to both your solos, troupes, and Generation Dance. Here is some general information for you to be considered • Private lessons are only available to students who attend EEP and/or ECB and are also enrolled in the recommended ballet and jazz exam classes. • Private lessons are one on one lessons with teacher and student. Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons and to protect both teacher and student all lessons are recorded with CCTV. • Private lessons can either be choreography lessons (if learning a new choreography) or technique/polishing lessons (working on already choreographed dances). Lessons are 30 minutes. Choreography must be pre purchased as it is then choregraphed for your child prior to their lessons. Pricing is- Studio Hire (studio one) - $12.50 per 30 minutes Teacher - $25 per 30 minutes Booking fee (goes direct to the booking software) - $2.50 per booking • Generation Dance teachers all specialise in choreographing different genres, this will be communicated when offering lessons. Please find a choreographer that specialises in the dance style your child wants to learn., sometimes the style your child loves is not the style they are best at. All teachers can polish and rehearse routines. You may also commission and external choreographer to teach something to your child, however as soon as it is learnt it must be shown to the EEP Director to approve. The choreographer must be aware that EEP students must be entered under Generation Dance, which is only fair for the school that invests, educates, trains, and develops the dancer. • Lessons are not scheduled regularly like other group classes at Generation Dance. Each teacher/choreographer will release available lessons and availability at their discretion, and these are to be booked by parents or students. Lessons need to be booked based on what each individual student needs and when they are competing. A guide is given on the booking system so please follow this. Dancers overbooking will have lessons cancelled to ensure there is time available for everyone. 18
• Lessons are scheduled around the Generation Dance timetable. Students may need to miss school to attend lessons and also competitions, if scheduled during weekdays. This means parents may need flexibility in their working hours to support this. Not every student can have a lesson that suits their timetable perfectly, it is just not possible. And not every student is going to be able to enter every competition possible. Find a balance between what your dancer needs and what you can manage. • Students can miss exam technique classes for competitions but cannot miss any competition troupe classes. In exam classes students work as individuals so missing a class only disadvantages the individual, not the group. • You can learn as many or as few dances as you wish. We are advocates for doing 1 dance really well, rather than 10 dances mediocre. No dance will be put on stage by any Generation Dance student unless it is 100% and approved by our EEP Director. This will vary for each individual student, based on how hard they are willing to work and what they are willing to invest and commit to. Some entries fees are quite high so ensure you know what is “competition ready” before entering as you will not get a refund if withdrawing. • Our studio is available to hire for individual practice. Please book through the website. • Parents must join our TEAM APP Group (search for GD Competition Troupes and EEP and find the group “Private Lessons”) as all communication and entry reminders are through there. • Students can enter any competition they wish; there are a lot available. Please investigate dates and suitability for your child. Most competitions release information via their social media. Entering a competition is similar to booking tickets to a concert at Entertainment Centre, as an example. Once the competition is sold out, they won’t take more entries, and most sell out in an hour or so. • Teachers will not be available at competitions. Some may be able to attend, on a voluntary basis, if they can. It’s important to remember that the teachers don’t just teach your child. Teachers also have families and other jobs and these limits being voluntarily available for all soloists when performing. • Learning a solo is an individual process, a little like exam work. The hard work that is put in, generally is rewarded. Sometimes not in placings but in personal growth, development and improvement. Working one on one with a teacher can really individualise a dancers training and advanced their skills further whilst also help work on any weaknesses. In saying that, there are not too many jobs out in the world where a dancer (or non- dancer) will only work on their own…. so, group work is a priority. Parent Responsibilities • Submit all entries. • Entry a variety of competitions. We recommend entering sections that will challenge your dancer and then also others that might be more confidence boosters. It is important dancers receive a bit of both, so they feel challenged and also rewarded. Only entering 1 competition a year runs the risk of deflating a child’s confidence, especially if they don’t perform or place as well as they wished. • Understand and follow the rules of each competition. 19
• Ensure the choreographer knows the maximum time limit of any dance being taught. If not given you run the risk of disqualification if over time. Each dance competition has different time limits and parents must check these. • Ensure students are entered into the correct genres and sections. Including knowing novice rules for each competition. You may think no one will notice your child is in novice when they shouldn’t be, but I guarantee you there are ‘dance mums’ out there who know exactly where your child should be. It’s a sad world for some but one we don’t take part in. Just ensure you enter the correct sections so you’re not a risk of disqualification. • Mind Your Own Business!!! Do not worry about what any other dancer is doing, or not doing, or wearing or attending etc. Just focus on your child. • Support your child with their home practice. Do not try and coach or teach your child, just encourage their own practice. • Organise all costumes, makeup, tights, shoes, head pieces and groom students ready for stage. Have everything needed and don’t assume anyone will be there to help you or borrow something from. Ensure your dancer is groomed correctly for stage and up to GD’s standards. Troupe hair and makeup requirements must be followed. Ensure each dancer has a dress rehearsal in costume. • Music will be suppled via drop box. Parents must be able to then use the files to submit to individual competitions based on their requirements. Student’s must bring music to every lesson on a device than can be plugged into an AUX cord. • Prepare the students for stage. This includes – 1. Ensuring students have all requirements needed for their dances. 2. Organise all props. Including transport and the putting on and off stage. 3. Ensuring the students are side stage ready to perform, in and organised and professional manner that is expected at GD. • Always, always, always remember to HAVE FUN! This is meant to be an enjoyable, exciting, uplifting experience for our dancers. Even the fact this document has to be written takes away the fun and enjoyment of this process, but it doesn’t have to. Enjoy this experience and time with your child, be proud of how amazing they are, trust the professionals, teachers and choreographers and HAVE FUN!!! 20
