Tutor Groups Students in Year 7 will be in tutor groups consisting of Year 7 students only. You will remain in the same tutor group for most of your time at the Academy, although your form tutor may change. Tutors are the first people students need to see if there are any worries about anything at school or if they feel ill. You will be given details of how to contact the tutor by email. Learning Support Unit (LSU) LSU is where students need to go when: They are feeling unwell They have lost something They don’t know where their lesson is and they need a copy of their timetable They have to hand any money in e.g. for trips or books 9
Absence & Behaviour All students are expected to maintain attendance of 100% at the Academy. Low attendance will not be tolerated. If students are absent from the Academy: Phone the Academy on the first day of the absence and every day thereafter via the absence line. 24 hour Student Absence Line 01789 762285 Option 1. A period of absence 3 days or more will require medical evidence. If no evidence is provided, this will lead to an unauthorised absence. Students below 90% to provide this for all absences. Attendance will be closely monitored by tutors and the Academy Attendance Officer. Any students falling below 95% will automatically trigger external agency intervention and this may lead to legal intervention and prosecution. All late arrivals will be logged and detentions set to pay back the time. Any request for absence must be on the ‘Application for Leave of Absence’ document which can be found on the school website. Other than in exceptional circumstances, these will be declined. Holidays are not permitted during term time and we do and have prosecuted if these are taken. Students achieving high attendance will be rewarded with the opportunity of trips throughout the year. Behaviour in the Academy It is really important that students behave well at Alcester Academy. We have the high- est of expectations with regards to behaviour. If behaviour causes a problem, parents/ carers will be contacted and students may be removed from lessons. There are subject detentions held at lunchtime or after school. For more serious incidents Academy de- tentions (Thursdays 3.30-4.30pm) and Senior Leadership Team detentions (SLT) (Fridays 3.30-5pm) are issued. We do have an isolation facility that is used for more high level incidents and also fixed term exclusions for serious offences. Parents will be in- formed of any high level sanction applied. Students receiving no behaviour referrals within the year will be offered rewards trips throughout the year. 10
Rewards There are lots of opportunities at Alcester Academy to receive awards. Rewards are given for many different aspects of school life and these include - producing good work in lessons and for home learning, excellent attendance and behaviour, helping out with school activities, representing the school and participation in an extra- curricular activity. Throughout the year students participate in celebration assemblies where certificates for progress, effort and achievement are given out for all subjects. In July each year a whole school celebration evening is held where subject areas nominate students, for attainment and effort, to receive an award. We also offer reward trips to students who excel with good behaviour and attendance. These students also get the opportunity to take part in reward trips such as ice skating, RUSH UK, Jump In and an end of year trips to places such as Drayton Manor, London, West Midlands Safari Park, Umberslade Adventure and Alton Towers. 11

Breakfast Club, Break & Lunchtime The canteen is open for breakfast club from 8.15 - 8.40am. Students have one break in the morning; during break students can buy snacks such as bacon baguettes, bagels, toast and drinks. At lunchtime the canteen is open serving hot meals and snacks. If students bring a packed lunch they can eat this in the hall or outside. No students are allowed off academy premises at lunchtime. What can students do at break and lunchtime? At break and lunchtime students can go to the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), Hall or join in with Art, Music and sport activities. Students are not permitted to eat in corridors or classrooms. During the summer months the field is open for use at breaks and lunchtime. All lunchtime clubs and afterschool activities (Additional Learning Opportunities) are published on our website each term. LSU is also open to students at break and lunch times. There is a Friendship Club that runs every lunch time and Homework Club runs every day in the ICT rooms. These are supported by TAs. 15
The Academy Canteen We operate a cashless system for purchasing your food, using a fingerprint recognition system at the till. Students will be given more details about this in September. Depositing money into a validating machine tops up your credit. It is important to keep your account in credit to ensure that students can buy the food they want. Alcester Academy is subscribed to School Gateway, an online payment system linked to your School Gateway account. The system enables parents/carers to top up dinner money online by credit or debit card. Students can also bring in money (coins) and put them in the top up machine in the canteen or parents can write a cheque, payable to Educaterers, which students post into a box, also in the canteen. If students are bring- ing a cheque, parents/carers will need to put it in an envelope clearly marked with the students name and tutor group. The canteen is open for a breakfast club, from 8.15 - 8.40am, during morning break and at lunchtime. Print outs of students purchases can be requested or, if registered, viewed on School Gateway. 16
Could your child be eligible for extra help? Families who receive the following are eligible for Free School Meals: Income support Income-based job seeker’s allowance (JSA) Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA) Guarantee element of state pension credit Universal credit (with an annual income of less than £7,400) Both income-cased and contribution-based JSA/ESA if you receive the same amount for both. You should also qualify if you receive both but the Income-based amount is greater, but not if the contribution-based amount is greater Families who are awarded Child Tax Credit and have an annual income, as assessed by HMRC, not in excess of £16,190 are also eligible to claim free school meals providing there is no entitlement to Working Tax Cred- it (unless in respect of a 4-week ‘run-on’). The online checking system only confirms or denies your eligibility to claim free school meals: it does not give us any other information. If you are currently in receipt of either Universal Credit or the 4-week run on of Working Tax Credit the system will not automatically be able to determine your eligibility, therefore you will need to send proof that you are in receipt of these benefits to the Free School Meals office once you have completed and saved your application. When your eligibility has been confirmed and your application processed, you will be sent an email confirming eligibility. The school will also receive notification of your child’s application. What is Pupil Premium? The government pays extra money to schools for every child whose parents receive the support payments above. This money can then be spent on increasing their achievement. How will it benefit my child? As well as there being more money to help your child learn, they will also be eligible for a free school meal, which can save you up to £380 per year. Does my child have to eat the school meal? No, but even if they don’t the school will get the Pupil Premium to use to boost achievement. How do I apply? The application process could not be simpler! You can apply through the website: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals OR Make a telephone call Tel:- 01926 359189 If you would like assistance in making your application the please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be happy to have you come in to the Academy and be assisted in making the online application. 17

Super Learning Days The Academy also operates Super Learning Days (SLDs) throughout the academic year that are designed to support learning in key Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) areas. SLDs involve students spending the day working on themes such as bullying, puberty, well-being, friendships and transition. We work with a theatre in education company called Loudmouth to deliver these days. 19
Homework Students will be set an appropriate amount of homework each week. There is a published homework timetable for students parents/carers. Students will usually be given at least 2 days to complete the homework. Role of the Student To record homework in their planners. To ensure they understand the task set and ask for any help well in advance of the due date. To inform their parents/carers if they cannot complete their homework so this can be passed on to the subject teacher. To ensure they stay up to date with their homework. To understand that there will be times when they will need to undertake per- sonal study beyond that set by the teacher. For example: revising for exams, coursework and catching up on work missed due to absence from lessons. Key policies are on our website (www.alcesteracademy.org.uk) for parents/carers to view as required. The expected homework load each week should be: Expected amount may vary from time to time There are homework clubs available for students to attend each week. These are supported by TAs. 20
The Student Planner Students will be given a Student Planner on the first day of term. This is a very important item. Each week tutors will check that it is signed by parents/carers. Students must make sure they…... Always have it with them in school and at home. Record homework in it, messages from parents and targets etc. Record reading for pleasure activities. Parents need to sign the Student Planner at the end of each week to show they have checked the homework. If no homework has been set, students write “none set” against that sub- ject in the Student Planner. This will happen from time to time as a result of teachers changing their plans based on how quickly students progress through their learning activities. There is a Conduct Log page within the Student Planner. This page will be used to record detentions and behaviour issues. Communication between Home / School The form tutor should be the first point of contact for most issues. All parent/carer email addresses are available to tutors. Staff email addresses are available to parents. Parents/carers can visit the school for a drop-in session with the Senior Leadership Team every Wednesday afternoon from 3.30—4.30pm. Parents/carers can use the Student Planner. Please also use: lsusupport@alcesteracademy.org.uk Parents are encouraged to contact the school if they have any concerns. We really want to support our students and parents as much as we can. 21
Reports & Parents Evening Students will have three reports issued per year. There will be a Parents’ Evening with tutors early in the autumn term to check how students are progressing and a further Parents’ Evening later in the year with subject teachers. 22

It is very important to behave sensibly on the bus as poor behaviour could result in individuals being banned from travelling on the school buses. Yearly Bus Passes You will need to apply through Warwickshire County Council, details shown below. Passes will be automatically be posted from WCC each year during the summer holidays to a student’s home address. Replacement Bus Passes If a pass has been lost or damaged it needs to be replaced. Students — Don’t panic! These are some worries you may have: I haven’t done my homework or left it at home Tell your teacher in the lesson if you have got the subject that day or find your teacher at break or lunchtime. You should not get a detention unless you have done this several times. I don’t understand the homework or class work Go and speak to your teacher as soon as possible. Don’t be embarrassed to do this as you are probably not the only one! You could also check with someone in your teaching group. I’m lost in the Academy Remember you have a map in this booklet. There will be lots of staff and students to help you during your first few weeks. You can also go to LSU and they will help you. I’m late for school Come into school as soon as possible and staff will guide you. If you are late, after 8.50am, please sign in at the Attendance Officer’s office. I’ve got a doctors or dentist appointment in school time Ask your parents to write a letter to your tutor. When you arrive at the Academy students must sign in at the LSU and then go to your lesson. I need to speak to a teacher Go to their teaching room or speak to your tutor first thing in the morning about how to find them. 34
I need to phone home Go to LSU and ask them if you can phone home. (e.g. to say that a football/netball practice has been cancelled.) I’ve left my Student Planner at home Write your home learning down on a piece of paper, when you get home write it in your Student Planner as soon as possible. I’ve been absent and missed work Ask your teacher what you have missed. Remember a friend in your teaching group may be able to help you catch up too. I feel ill in a lesson Tell your teacher and they will send you to LSU. If possible try and see your tutor during break or lunchtime to tell them. I feel ill or hurt myself at break/lunchtime Either go and find you tutor or go to LSU and they will get you a First Aider if needed. I’ve missed my bus home Go to LSU and they will phone your parents. Wait there for your parents to collect you - DO NOT wait outside. 35
English and Maths extension activities over the summer: Maths In order to aid the transition from primary to secondary Mathematics we strongly suggest pupils develop their times tables. To know up to and includ- ing the 12 times tables fluently significantly supports the learning over Key Stages 3 and 4. To be able to recall solutions to multiplications at ease ensures the pupil can access the developed parts of questions much more quickly and more comfortably - particularly under controlled conditions. There are many websites that support times tables and the other crucial basic skills with BBC Bitesize being a popular choice. English Included in your pack is a Suggested Reading for Year 7 leaflet. It includes several categories including: Humour, Adventure, Crime, Thriller, Fantasy, Current Affairs and Classics. 36
My First Day at Alcester Academy Thursday 3rd September 2020 This start date is provisional at this time. We will be in touch to confirm when we know more.
