Professional Development Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access in the Classroom In this three-part virtual series, participants will explore the science and social systems that impact classroom practice. This engaging, interactive, and non-judgmental series will support arts educators and administrators as they reflect their practice toward culture, communications, instruction, and student expectations in the classroom. Beyond the Classroom Music for Schools Our Music for Schools instrument lending library allows students who cannot afford the opportunity to participate in their school’s band or orchestra program the opportunity to do so. Working directly with schools and teachers, the instruments are loaned for the entire school year, completely free of charge. Since its inception in 2000, the lending library has grown from a small collection of core band instruments to more than 1,000 instruments of all types through the generous community support. “My program would not be as good or complete without the opportunity to borrow Music for Schools instruments for my students.” 10 Education Through the Arts | FALL 2021
Beyond the Classroom Mariachi Ensemble Luther Burbank Center’s Mariachi Ensemble program expands upon the skills taught to participants in LBC’s Mariachi Summer Camp. This free, audition-only afterschool program allows students to attend weekly rehearsals, participate in community performances, while providing instruments for student use. Classes cover music theory, stage presence, vocal and musical technique, and mariachi history and culture. Along with the performing Ensemble, we offer beginning and intermediate-level skills classes. “Every new thing they learn in mariachi motivates them to be better people and they try to improve every day. It is very motivating for them.” Teachers Experiencing Arts Meet-Up (TEAM) Teachers Experiencing Arts Meet-Up (TEAM) serves as a teacher’s night out while also introducing educators to aspects of the Center’s programming they may not have formerly experienced. Each event focuses around an arts activity tied to offerings of the Education Through the Arts program. We hope you will join us at these events to help shape our programs to better serve you and your students. Virtual! Back to School Kick-Off September 22, 2021 | 4:30–5:30pm Additional events will be announced later in the year. “LBC’s TEAM nights are a welcome opportunity to learn about their programs and offer a fun way to collaborate with other teachers!” Let’s Be Creative! with LBC The Let’s Be Creative virtual initiative offers weekly arts videos and tutorials curated by LBC and delivered online via the LBC Facebook and YouTube pages so that students of all ages (and their families) are able to learn and participate from home. This initiative includes dance classes, instrument care tutorials, visual art projects, music challenges, literature- based lessons, and more. Adapting History Virtual! by Dahlak Nov 1–30, 2021 Grades: 6–12 Musical artist Dahlak uses spoken word poetry to narrate the Run Time: 60 min complex history of our nation. From gospel to blues, jazz to R&B, America has produced some of the most innovative music of the 20th century. Although the songs are easy on the ears, their inception occurred in cultural climates that were often discordant. This musical chronicle shows that despite conflict and misunderstanding, we are still brilliantly creative and resilient. Adapting History was created in collaboration with and commissioned by Montalvo Arts Center’s Education Department, OneBeat via the U.S. State Department, ArtPower UCSD, and the Mondavi Center at UC Davis. What Do You Do With An Idea? Virtual! by Inlet Dance Theatre Nov 29–Dec 17, 2021 Grades: PK–4 Told through movement, music, and narration, an ensemble of Run Time: 60 min dancers creates a magical world where ideas grow and take flight. When a child has an idea, they don’t know what to do with it. At first, they attempt to hide it away, but when the idea gets stronger so does the child’s confidence, leading up to the day something amazing happens. Based on the New York Times best selling book, this is a story for anyone, at any age, who has ever had an idea that seemed a little too big, too odd, or too difficult. Calidanza Dance Company welcomes the community back to celebrate Christmas together at the Luther Burbank Center. Enjoy the annual Posada Navideña evening as Calidanza performs the vibrant dance, music, and song of Mexico. Last year, Calidanza partnered with LBC to bring you the Posada show, virtually. This year, join Artistic Director, Steven Valencia, and the Company, in person at the theater, for a tradition-filled night of lively dance, colorful costumes, festive music—the right start to the holiday season.
