                         A festival for the 10th
                         edition of HEAR PALMER
Château Palmer gives carte blanche to the jazzman Émile Parisien, patron
of the 2018 vintage and creative director of three concerts programmed
                         from 29 to 31 March 2019.

In 2009, a meeting between Thomas Duroux, managing director of Château
Palmer, and Jacky Terrasson, the famous Franco-American jazz pianist, gave
birth to an original concept – Hear Palmer. The idea: to give the en primeur
period a unique, artistic tenor, created by jazz artists of world renown, who
would link each vintage to an improvisation of their own during a concert in
the estate’s barrel cellars.
Jacky Terrasson in 2009, and Yaron Herman and Michel Portal in 2010 were
the first to associate their notes with those of Château Palmer’s en primeur
wines. Daniel Humair, Lionel Belmondo, Archie Shepp(1) – among others –
would do so in the vintages that followed.

An artists’ residence to absorb
the sprit of the vintage

Every year at Château Palmer a score is written. That
of the new vintage, composed from the vineyard to the
cellar. Capturing the personality of the new blend, and
rendering an interpretation in music, requires partaking in
the life of the estate during this intense period. It’s in that
sprit that Château Palmer welcomes the musicians for an
artists’ residence; they come and discover the vineyard, the
château, the history, the men and women, and the wines – in
particular the vintage of which they will become its patron
and its voice.
Out of this immersion comes music... whether it’s an
improvisation on the sensations of a tasting, or the
composition of a piece dedicated to Château Palmer, it
is nourished by the place and its energy, by the emotions
felt and the stories heard over the course of the visit.

10th opus of Hear Palmer: carte
blanche for Émile Parisien to raise
the curtain on the 2018 vintage
This artistic accompaniment of each vin-
tage that Château Palmer has brought to
fruition annually since 2009 will this year take on an exceptional scale – that of a festival. To
celebrate the 10th edition of this jazz&wine fusion, the estate has opened Hear Palmer to the
wider public, and given jazz lovers the opportunity to attend concerts organised in two locations
– one which echoes the history of Major General Palmer, the creator of Château Palmer who
also owned the land on which today stands an auditorium dedicated to music (Le Rocher de Pal-
mer - 30/03), and the other being an already iconic landmark of the wine world (La Cité du vin
- 31/03). As creative director of this 10th edition of Hear Palmer, the jazz saxophonist and com-
poser Émile Parisien has become the honorary ambassador of the 2018 vintage.

Émile Parisien: back to Palmer
A musician recognized by Rolling Stone magazine as “one of the most brilliant
European saxophonists of his generation” (2), Émile Parisien knows the estate
well, having participated in the 2013 edition of Hear Palmer alongside Daniel
Humair. Five years later, he returns as the ambassador of the 2018 vintage,
accompanied by magnificent musicians ready to share in the creative carte
blanche given him by Thomas Duroux.
The musical universe of Émile Parisien is nourished by multiple influences
rooted in the French jazz tradition. To this is added the compositional layering
of contemporary music, and the melodic and harmonious abstraction of free
jazz. His recently released album, Double Screening, recorded with his quartet,
has received critical acclaim for its
