PROGRAMME NOTES Tai timu, tai pari is in a single movement, Gillian Whitehead (b.1941) lasting a bit over 20 minutes, where the Tai timu, tai pari sections, in general terms, are slow, fast, for violin and orchestra cadenza, fast and slow. WORLD PREMIERE ONE SINGLE MOVEMENT, IN FIVE SECTIONS Tai timu, tai pari is dedicated to Andrew Beer. DURATION: c.20’ © GILLIAN WHITEHEAD For this evening’s concert, Dame Gillian has written these notes: I wrote the concerto on the Otago Peninsula, INTERVAL in the wake of the first wave of Covid. I’d worked on other pieces during 2020, all initiated before the epidemic (and cancelled Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) because of it), but this piece is written under Symphony No.2 the influences of these new times. I felt FOUR MOVEMENTS: initially that I couldn’t write anything that was I. Largo – Allegro moderato harsh or strident, but rather the sounds had II. Scherzo: Allegro molto to be gentle. This was probably something to III. Adagio do with the uncertainty, the keeping safe and IV. Finale: Allegro vivace the exhortations to be kind we’d experienced over those past 18 months. However, as I DURATION: c.58’ wrote, the structure of the piece took over, and that self-censorship went away. The disastrous reception of Sergei From my studio on the Peninsula I can Rachmaninov’s First Symphony in 1897 look across the harbour towards the hills nearly put an end to his career as a opposite, and what I see constantly changes. composer. Only after a three-year struggle The tide ebbs and flows (‘tai timu, tai pari’ and an intensive course of psychotherapy did translates from te reo Māori as low tide, high the shattered composer gradually re-build tide), light plays on the water, birds forage his musical personality. for food, rest on the water, whirl in flocks. Rachmaninov never said that the my pieces it harks back to the balance and Second Symphony told the story of his proportions of the classical era. journey back from nervous breakdown to artistic health, but a struggle from weakness to strength can nevertheless be easily read into the music. 14 EBB & FLOW
EBB & FLOW A frequent but half-hidden signpost on this journey is the Latin hymn for the dead, the Dies Iræ, which was almost an obsession with Rachmaninov, who loved its overtones of Fate, Judgement, and Eternity. The first movement has a perfectly arched introduction that starts in the deep gloom of the cellos and basses, then strives upwards towards the light. Despite a huge effort and a thrilling moment of climax, the music falls back until only a sad, Tristanesque cor anglais is left. Short, breathless woodwind phrases appear four times, and the strings answer with a swell that is grounded on the opening few notes, and provides the first main theme. A more lyrical second theme follows before the large development section in which the battle is on between rising energy and emotional retreat. Two big, dissonant climaxes are heard before a recapitulation that continues the fight, but leads to an ending that is cut short by a few swift blows. In the Scherzo that follows, a full-blooded theme for horns is built from the opening notes of the Dies Iræ, and a second section is warm and romantic. Following a repeat of the Scherzo, the music dies away, muttering darkly, but in the wonderful Adagio of the third movement, a vast, sunlit sea of sound is revealed, harbouring an unforgettable solo for clarinet, and showing Rachmaninov’s string-writing at its peak. Thus refreshed, the composer produces an exuberant finale. There are pounding rhythms, march-like themes, glittering, tarantella-like dance sections, and grand moments of recognition as earlier themes reappear at the close, crowning the work with an air of triumph and conviction.
