Dr. Tristan W Casey PhD, DPsyc(Org), BPsycSci, GradDipOHS Registered and endorsed Organisational Psychologist Leadership, culture, and teamwork expert Applied researcher and professional consultant vulcanisoft@gmail.com 16 Pavuvu Street +61 424 87 47 87 Mansfield QLD 4122 BIOGRAPHY Dr Tristan Casey is a skilled mixed methods researcher, with extensive expertise in both quantitative statistical analysis (e.g., confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modelling, regression techniques) and a range of qualitative methods (e.g., convergent interviewing, focussed ethnography, grounded theory, thematic analysis). Dr Casey has led numerous health and safety-oriented projects while employed as a consultant, government Principal Advisor for Workplace Health & Safety Queensland, and academic at Griffith University. In late 2019, Dr Casey founded a boutique consultancy called The Culture Effect with a co-investigator, Dr Xiaowen Hu (from Queensland University of Technology). Within 12 months of operating, The Culture Effect, a cross-institutional research translation and bespoke consultancy entity, generated over $1,000,000 of industry and grant funding. Dr Casey is a skilled research translator, having presented at national conferences on the topic of tripartite collaboration and co-design to create meaningful organisational and workforce change (e.g., Casey & Jorritsma, 2019). He has worked extensively with government and delivered several projects that have had state- and Australia-wide impact, including the LEAD safety leadership initiative. This initiative won several national awards (including the coveted National Safety Council of Australia ‘pinnacle’ award in 2019) and adopted by over 100 national and international organisations since 2018. Further, in 2020 Dr Casey was within the top four candidates for the coveted Australian Institute of Health and Safety ‘Young Safety Leader’ of the year award. In 2019, Dr Casey was recognised as runner- up in the Queensland Community Achiever Awards within the Health and Safety category. Dr Casey is an expert safety capability trainer and presenter, having done numerous keynote presentations and industry workshops and training programs. He has a dedicated YouTube channel and several free Udemy courses that provide free safety education to health and safety professionals. Dr Casey has taught into the Graduate Safety Leadership program and educates mature aged safety professionals from industry in contemporary safety topics in his role at Griffith University. As an expert in organisational culture, leadership, and teamwork, Dr Casey is well-positioned as an ambitious and passionate early career researcher and professional consultant with strong leadership and applied research capabilities. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Co-founder – The Culture Effect Oct 2019-Present Created the boutique consulting firm ‘The Culture Effect’ specialising in organisational culture, leadership and team work. Established a collaboration between Griffith University and QUT. Routinely provides practical work experience for postgraduate research students in applied industry settings. Lecturer – Griffith University Feb 2019-Present Lecturer and researcher at the Safety Science Innovation Lab. Responsible for sourcing research funding from industry and government. Lead researcher for a safety culture project involving machine safety behaviours among young workers. Involved in course teaching (7225LHS, 7226LHS) and additional safety-related industry projects. Principal Advisor – Workplace Health & Safety Qld. Jan 2017-Feb 2019 Responsible for strategy and operations around the state-wide Safety Leadership at Work Program. Represented WHSQ at national conferences and at industry network meetings and other events. Achievements recognised with an OIR Outstanding Employee award. Senior Research Scientist – Sentis Pty Ltd. May 2011 – Feb 2016 Specialising in safety and general occupational health, in this role I support the research needs of internal and external clients. Responsibilities include: development and administration of quantitative surveys (e.g., safety climate survey), design and management of empirical research studies, intervention design and evaluation, statistical analysis, client reporting, and representation of Sentis at professional and academic events (e.g., conferences). I routinely travel nationally and internationally to conduct onsite research projects, present findings to client management teams, and present the findings of studies at conference (e.g., SIOP, WS&H). Key achievements include: receiving the Sentis Innovation and Professionalism awards, and developing the commercially-viable Safety Climate Survey (SCS), Safety Leadership Assessment (SLA), and the Onsite Safety Evaluation (OSE) products.
Statistician – Office for Economic & Statistical Research, Qld Treasury Nov 2010 - May 2011 In this position at the Queensland State Treasury Department, I designed and implemented large-scale population surveys. I was responsible for survey design, project management, client reporting, quality review, and developing CATI survey administration protocols. Key achievements include: successful development and implementation of two Queensland-wide telephone surveys for state government departments, and project management of a successful trial of an SMS-based census reminder tool. Research Officer – Relationships Australia Queensland August 2009 – Nov 2010 As the sole research officer for RAQ, I was responsible for designing, managing, and analysing client satisfaction surveys, conducting program evaluation, assisting with staff training, and representing the organisation at academic and practitioner-focused conferences. Key achievements included: successful trial and evaluation of Australia’s first national online mediation service for the Federal Attorney-General’s Department, and successful implementation of two state-wide client satisfaction surveys. Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner – Relationships Australia QLD May 2008 – Mar 2010 In my role as a registered FDRP, I developed clinical interviewing and mediation skills through conducting phone-based intake interviews and dispute resolution sessions with separated parents. For three months of this role I acted as a co-ordinator of Australia’s only national telephone dispute resolution service, which involved investigating client complaints, scheduling sessions, staff management, and delivering training. Key achievements include: completion of RAQ’s clinical review process, achieving FDRP qualifications and recognition, and identification of a resource shortfall that resulted in additional resources being allocated to the service.
RESEARCH GRANTS & INDUSTRY FUNDING My approach to research funding is to balance competitive tenders and grants with smaller but more frequent consulting income. For each project, I create maximum value by assembling a fit-for-purpose team that will ensure project deliverables are met. This has resulted in an extensive academic, industry, and government network that routinely approaches me proactively for consulting projects.
