speaker and moderator Professor Caitlin Byrne Director, Griffith Asia Institute Professor Caitlin Byrne is a Faculty Fellow of the University of Southern California's Centre for Public Diplomacy (CPD). Prior to joining academia, Caitlin had established a professional career spanning strategic management, foreign and social policy roles across government, business and community sectors. She has represented Australia internationally including as Consul to the Australian Embassy, Mexico. Caitlin’s research is focused on Australian diplomacy with a special interest in Australia’s engagement in the Asia-Pacific region. Most recent research projects explore the role of leadership, soft power and public diplomacy—including people-to-people connections developed through international education, culture and sport—in developing Australia’s regional influence, relationships and reputation. Her research is published in a range of journals including the Australian Journal of International Affairs, the Australian Journal of Politics and History, Politics and Policy, and The Hague Journal on Diplomacy. Recent consultancies include the development of the Australian Government Sports Diplomacy 2030 Strategy and knowledge hub; training needs analysis (international policy and strategy) for the Australian Government’s Diplomatic Academy, and the development of Australia’s Global Alumni Engagement Strategy for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Caitlin sits on the National Reference Board of ACICIS, the Executive Council of the Australian Institute for International Affairs (Queensland), the Australia- America Fulbright Commission's Scholarship Selection Panel (Queensland).
. speaker Rowan Callick OBE Journalist and Industry Fellow, Griffith Asia Institute Rowan Callick is a columnist for The Australian. He grew up in England, graduating with a BA Honours from Exeter University, and worked for a daily newspaper before moving to Papua New Guinea, becoming general manager of a locally owned publishing, printing and retail group. In 1987 he moved to Australia, working for almost 20 years for The Australian Financial Review including as Hong Kong based China Correspondent and as Asia Pacific Editor, and for two years as a senior writer for Time magazine. He worked for The Australian from 2006 to 2018, including two postings to Beijing as China Correspondent, and as Asia Pacific Editor. His work has also been published widely elsewhere, including The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy magazine, and The Times. He is a governor of the Foundation for Development Cooperation and a member of the advisory boards of La Trobe Asia and of the China Studies Department also at La Trobe University. He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute for International Affairs; has won two Walkley Awards; and the Graham Perkin Award for Australian Journalist of the Year. He was awarded the OBE at the nomination the government of PNG for services to journalism and to the training of PNG journalists. He has written three books, each published in English and Chinese, the most recent being “Party Time: Who Runs China And How” (Black Inc in Australia, and internationally by Palgrave Macmillan as “The Party Forever: Inside China’s Modern Communist Elite,” by Palgrave Macmillan). He has spoken on Asian and Pacific topics, especially on China, at many university campuses in Australia, New Zealand and China, in June 2018 at the CEDA will be tweeting from this School of Oriental & African Studies at London University and in June 2019 at event using #GlobalEcon King’s College, London University, as well as at international conferences in Asia. speaker Penny Burtt Group Chief Executive Officer, Asialink Asialink is Australia’s leading centre for the promotion of public understanding of the countries of Asia and of Australia’s role in the region. Penny joined Asialink from global payments company Visa, where she served as Vice President, Government Affairs, Asia Pacific. Prior to Visa, Penny led External Relations and Client Service Risk for the Asia Pacific with McKinsey & Company. Penny is a former diplomat and represented Australia at a senior level in Singapore; Malaysia; Indonesia; at the United Nations in Geneva; and New York. She previously served as an Adviser to the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs. In the course of her career, Penny has served on the Boards of the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore; the United States National Center for Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC); the Singapore Institute for International Affairs; and the Singapore Committee of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD). She is a member of the Australia-India CEO Forum and the Advisory Board for ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership. Penny is a Trustee of CEDA.
. speaker Dr Julia Newton-Howes AM Chief Executive Officer, Investing in Women Twitter: @JNewtonHowes Investing in Women is a seven-year Australian Government initiative, to increase women’s economic participation as employees and as entrepreneurs and to influence the enabling environment to promote women’s economic empowerment in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar through: Supporting Business Coalitions work with influential businesses on shifting workplace cultures, practices and policy barriers to achieve Workplace Gender Equality; Partnering with Impact Investors and ecosystem builders to expand market opportunities for women, to incentivise and catalyse access to capital for small and medium enterprises led by and responsive to the needs of women; and Influencing gender norms by working with partners to positively shift attitudes and practices to support women in the world of work. Julia joined Investing in Women in 2016 after spending nine years as Chief Executive Officer of CARE Australia, one of Australia’s largest humanitarian and development organisations. At CARE, Julia led a strategic focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment across all programming and oversaw a significant increase in donations. Over her career in international development, she has held various senior positions across different geographies, including Advisor to the Board at The World Bank and Assistant Director-General at AusAID. Her board memberships have included the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) and CARE International. speaker Tom Calder Trade and Investment Commissioner, ASEAN, Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) Tom Calder commenced in June 2018 as Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner – ASEAN, a new appointment under the Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2017–2022. Based in TIQ’s Singapore office, Tom is responsible for Singapore; Malaysia; Vietnam; Thailand; and other ASEAN nations in the region. He brings to the role 20 years’ experience in international trade and investment, having been an Australian trade commissioner in India and, most recently, Austrade State Director for Western Australia. Tom has also worked for the University of Melbourne as Regional Manager (Middle East and China), and was an Australian Government industry advisor. Tom has longstanding connections in the ASEAN region, having spent his early childhood in South East Asia before returning to Queensland for high school. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Asian Studies and has undertaken language training in Indonesian.
. speaker Wen Gu Chief Executive Officer, Australia China Business Council (ACBC), Queensland Wen is the first Chinese national to have held the Chief Executive Officer position at Australia China Business Council, Queensland. Wen’s professional experience spans a variety of industry sectors, both in Australia and China. She is passionate about fostering understanding and inclusion between the business communities of Australia and China. As a former international student from Monash University, Wen is also passionate about supporting international students to better integrate into Australian society. In 2016 she led the inaugural career fair in Shanghai for Chinese nationals graduated from Australian universities and is currently a mentor in the Connect Mentoring Program at the University of Queensland. Her keen interest to advance bilateral relations and bring businesses together has seen her make meaningful impact on the Australia and China business community. keynote speaker Richard Maude Deputy Secretary, Indo-Pacific Group, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Richard Maude’s portfolio covers Australia’s bilateral relations with Australia’s partners in Asia and North America, as well as Australia’s regional political, security, economic and development assistance interests. In 2017, Richard was head of the whole-of-government taskforce which supported the preparation of the Australian Government’s 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper. Richard was Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA) from May 2013 until November 2016. ONA reports directly to the Prime Minister and provides all-source assessments on international political, strategic and economic developments affecting Australia’s national interests. Before taking up the position of Director-General ONA, he was the senior adviser on foreign policy and national security issues in the Office of the Prime Minister. Richard has worked extensively on international security and Indo Pacific affairs as a career foreign service officer in Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has served overseas in Malaysia, where he was Deputy High Commissioner, Singapore and as the Liaison Officer for the Office of National Assessments in the Australian Embassy in Washington DC. Richard holds a first class honours degree in politics from the University of Adelaide and a Master of Arts (International Relations) from the Australian National University.
