Thank You To Our Sponsors
On behalf of every one here involved at the Football club we would like to say a massive
thank you for all of our amazing and generous sponsors. During such a difficult time the
generosity from so many local business has been incredible. The money we have received
will make everything run easier for us and help us to provide better facilities and equipment
for every team we run, from the u5s all the way up to the first team. We hope to meet as
many of you in person over the next few home games to say a personal thank you.Rocky Robin I recently saw a programme on BBC 2 (Wales) with Iola Williams on birds nesting in urban locations. It's a bit like football really in that there is a pecking order, and three points is the equivalent of finding berries, or in the case of the seagull, or the starling, it's chips! Certainly, the Nest has seen us pick up six points against league leaders Newport IOW and Andover Town. That is the equivalent of me finding a freshly stocked bird feeder full to the brim. There are some wonderful sunflowers in the garden outside the ground at Ash United. I like a good sunflower! Sometimes, you have to migrate to see what berries you can find on a different tree. Considering opponents Ash United have a tree as their badge, this was very apt. Joining the Garvey clan at Alderholt, it was up to Surrey, or is it North Hants? Who knows these days? Well, the FA do, with Combined Counties League Ash United moved over to the Wessex along with Fleet Spurs. They gave them Tadley Cavella and Fleet Town in return. It's like swop swap. Go figure! The highlight of the first half is Simon rocking up after twenty minutes from Guildford. Apart from Clarke hitting the base of the Ash post, diddly squid has happened. Garv counts the away fans and comes up with sixteen. The guy would count his dog as a fan if it was allowed in, such is his devotion to making the Robins great. If the dog was in attendance that is ! I admire Ash United's green and red goalnets. They match their amazing kit colour of green, red and white. The most bizarre, other than Windsor FC's green and red union jack number. Polly could have a rival for goalnets of the season here. Garv is off for executive carrot cake at half time, he seems to know the whole of the 155 crowd! The Robin is rocking as Laptas and Dible secure a 2-0 win at a very difficult place to win. We have found a corner of the ground to put up the banners (though there is only enough room for three of them), with Simon, Robbie, Garv, Harry and I (in the lucky scarf and sunflower look) applauding the lads for their endeavour. The fixture list has conspired to fess up a stew of matches with Laverstock and Ford, Fawley AFC and Bournemouth FC all due at the Nest between the 14th to 21st of September. Two of these are cup ties, and Fawley AFC in the league. That's three programmes to fill. Garv wants to do individual issues on all three. I started today doing my bit for the Robins cause. Keep on rocking. UTR. Rocky
Around the Leagues League leaders Pewsey Vale had just got over the line in their last two games against Corsham Town Development and Odd Down Reserves, both games being won by a solitary goal. Like many teams at the moment, they have had a number of key players missing through injury or otherwise in most games this season and have benefited from having a big squad, helped by now having a reserve side. Today saw the return of their main man James Guthrie who has been missing in recent weeks for what looked a tricky visit to the Infilled to play Melksham Town Reserves. The last manager to have defeated Pewsey in a competitive fixture had been Craig Kent when his then Cricklade side had defeated them 2-1 back in October last year. Now in charge at Melksham Kent was unable to repeat that achievement as two goals from the returning Guthrie secured all three points for the leaders in a 2-0 win. As a result of today’s victory over Melksham, Pewsey’s winning run now extends to 20 consecutive competitive games.
Fawley History The Club was formed as AGWI United in 1923 and joined the Hampshire League six seasons later. In 1949 they changed their name to Esso Fawley. They won Division Three of the Hampshire League in 1995 and reached the Premier Division in 1999. In 2002 they changed their name again to Fawley AFC and joined Division Two of the Hampshire League in 2005. In 2010 they finished as runners-up and were promoted to the Premier Division. They sustained themselves into the premier division as underdogs every year and narrowly avoided the drop until the season 2016/17. The same year The Waterside Sports and Social Club closed due to financial difficulties, Fawley were relegated on goal difference. In their return to Division One they managed a mid-table finish, but will be remembered for reaching the Sydenhams League Cup Final. They beat Shaftesbury, Stoneham, Hamble Club and Sholing on route in a cup run that upset all odds. They subsequently lost 4-0 to AFC Portchester in the final, a result proving it was one upset too far. Lee and Dave are building a team with a blend of experience Wessex League players combine with enthusiastic local young players. Their aim is to have a team that plays attractive and enjoyable football. Over the last couple of seasons our club’s small bunch of energetic committee members lead by Chairman Kev Mitchell have been working hard to upgrade the pitch and facilities and now keenly fund raising to build a new club house The village of Fawley is dominated by the Oil Refinery which has been there since1921. It was rebuilt and extended in 1951 and is the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom.
Downton 5 (Moseley 40, 55,68, Laptas 45,74) Bournemouth FC 4 (L Harvey 2, Manuel Bruno, Carkeet) Downton, went through to the next round of the Wessex League Cup, earning themselves a home tie with Andover New Street, reports Chris Garvey from Wick Lane. TJ Moseley returned with a hat trick, and Marcel Laptas scored twice. Bournemouth FC, will now focus on their trip to Blackfield and Langley on Saturday in the Wessex Premier League. Downton, will be looking to get back on track in the Wessex League 1st Division when Fawley AFC visit. Drinky Day
Robin Hopping Ash United, have joined the Wessex League Division 1 from the Combined Counties League. Set in the small town of Ash, the other side of Aldershot, this is a ground I am revisiting. This time to see the Robins. Last time, 2007, some dull years, and a 1-1 draw with Raynes Park Vale in the Combined Counties League. There are a few good venues in the Combined Counties League I would like to visit, such as Eversley & California. Small clubs, that do their best to make their way, often with little support. It's good some of us value these clubs. Get out there and help them. Like Fawley AFC, Totton and Eling, and ourselves in the Wessex League. We are the soul of the league. Ash United have good facilities, and plenty going on, a bit like Downton. You see these folk doing the jobs that need doing, just like at Downton. It's very similar. The Third Generation Services Stadium is a very picturesque ground, alinged by hedges and houses. Ash, have a kit stand yet put a sign on it with the clubs name. It has now aged somewhat, though the aesthetics are good. The home end is covered with the social club next to it. The rest is open, yet charming. Non League football offers this, though the Combined Counties League does have a few ground sharing clubs from the inner boroughs. Perhaps, Ash United wanted changed. One of their club members informs me that they are enjoying the Wessex League and the variation it brings. The Combined Counties League has seen the likes of Cranleigh, Tongham and Peppard all gone. Hartley Wintney was once one of these. The days of the village recreation ground, railed off are gone, now more so at County level (for example Surrey Elite League/ Hampshire League). There are a lot of groundshares such as former Wessex League side Clanfield residing at Havant and Waterlooville's West Leigh Park. Their home recreation ground used for the reserves. The players at Ash United are too glad of the change, the away trips to different places. Refreshing to hear, certainly when you think that, even at this level, money talks and a lot of players follow managers/coaches out of a club lock, stock, and possibly two smoking barrels. Hopefully not that, most are just glad of a few expenses and the chance to play at Step 6 and in the FA Vase. Photo and article - Avril Lancaster
Do we like Tavistock? To many programme collectors and indeed amateur historians, the adverts in old programmes can be fascinating. Many of course will flick past the adverts looking for ‘the good stuff’ and perhaps moan “it’s full of blooming adverts!” To me it’s an opportunity to delve into a localities physche and see who is who and what is what. Straight laced? upper class? Down to earth? The ads never lie. This comes to mind as I flick back through my Tavistock v Plymouth Argyle X1 programme from pre- season 2012. This was before twitter so I arrived unsure if the game was still on let alone knowing if there would be a programme. There certainly was a programme, a beauty in fact! This full colour programme on almost card thick paper was a joy. The arty cover had a moody edge as dark clouds hovered over the ground and the EIGHTY pages inside had good photography and information on both clubs. As ever though I was drawn to the adverts. Not really for historical reference, it was only 9 years ago after all. No I’m after the ‘comedy’ company names to understand the personality of Tavy. One page in particular did not disappoint and had three absolute winners! The Leaping Salmon (Home of the Laughing Stock) which might have been a pub but could easily have been aquirium hosting a comedy night. Next it’s Roger The Watchman, a local private investigator keeping an eye the town or actually a second hand watch seller. Then it’s The Hogs Bottom. A pub? A cafe selling bacon? Nope they are of course purveyors of finest vinegars, silly me! As the game played itself out in a ground I hadn’t visited before, I was back in amongst the ads. The Whole Shebang (hairdresser), Jack’s Olde Barber Shoppe (a bit more obvious), A Scent-Sation (florist) and my favourite from many progs, ‘Your advert here’ as if we are supposed to draw in our industry and company name! Conclusions? Great programme and a packed ground, lovely area and no idea of the final score. All I know is Tavistock the town has a lot of personality and a good sense of humour. Worth swiping right for me thinks...
