Chronicle Magazine Inside Welcome to the Winter edition of Chronicle, the magazine for Leader’s Stevenage people… 4 Pride of Stevenage column winners 6-9 A year in the Headlines This year has been a difficult one for us all, here at the 10 How to shop safely council, as with many of you, it has been quite possibly the most challenging any of us have faced in our working lives. 11 Regeneration update The commitment and support of our staff has been key to our response and is now also essential to both our and the town’s recovery, working in conjunction with many other 12 SADA safe spaces 13 organisations and businesses across Stevenage and throughout the county. Stevenage in Numbers At the turn of the year, we will all, I am sure, be reflecting on how challenging 2020 has been. The Covid-19 pandemic has tested us in many ways. It has changed our home lives, how we have interacted with family and friends and how we have worked. I bet most of us hadn’t even heard of Zoom before the pandemic struck! 14 How to access your Councillor But once again, the people of Stevenage have demonstrated real community spirit in the way they have observed the social distancing rules and in the way that so many 15 Getting in touch individuals and organisations have reached out to help the people that needed it most. We are not quite out of the woods yet, but the vaccination programme gives us hope that things can return to normal in 2021 which will hopefully be a better year. In the meantime, please take time to reflect and be proud of your town and the way in which it has come together as a community during this difficult time. I think you should certainly applaud yourselves, your friends and your neighbours for your spirited response during these past nine months. Best wishes, Leader of the Council, Cllr Sharon Taylor Stevenage Borough Council stevenage.gov.uk chronicle@stevenage.gov.uk @stevenageboroughcouncil @StevenageBC facebook.com/stevenageboroughcouncil 2

Chronicle Magazine A year in the headlines It’s safe to say that 2020 was a year unlike any other and brought with it a unique set of challenges for all parts of our community. Covid 19 and the council’s response to dealing with it dominated the headlines. There has of course been some good news too but the last 12 months has been challenging to say the least... Jan-March Business as usual for the first part of the year until news emerges of a fast spreading virus from the Far East called COVID-19. Plans are quickly prepared to seek to halt the spread and mitigate against its effects on the most vulnerable parts of the community. 6
The magazine for Stevenage people April-June With the country in lockdown, the council moves to support the community, with a particular emphasis on the most isolated. Our bespoke support hub Stevenage Helps is set up to deliver food and supplies around the town to those that need it most. The cost of extra support during the crisis begins to impact on Council resources both locally and nationally leading to pleas for more financial help from central Government. 7
Chronicle Magazine July-September The Government eases lockdown restrictions, allowing businesses to reopen with social distancing measures in place. News emerges of a proposal from Hertfordshire County Council to replace the 11 local councils in Herts with a single large council which was strongly opposed by the District and Borough Council Leaders across the county. 8
The magazine for Stevenage people October-December Some good news on the sporting front as Stevenage’s Lewis Hamilton wins a seventh Formula One world title, equaling Michael Schumacher’s record. Local heroes are recognised in a special Covid focused Pride of Stevenage Awards, recognising those that stepped up to help others during the crisis. 9
