Borough Overview | 03 borough history History Demographics Westville is located in Gloucester County, New Jersey and 2010 Census Information was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Borough Size: 1.378 square miles Legislature on April 7, 1914, from portions of Deptford Township and West Deptford Township, based on the Population: 4,288 results of a referendum held on April 28, 1914. The borough Households: 1,755 was reincorporated on March 8, 1914. Legislation was Age: passed in 1900 to create Westville, but it had to have a majority vote in favor of the new municipality in both 12% Deptford and West Deptford. The borough was named for 20% under age of 18 Thomas West, who built a home in the area in 1775 that still 18 to 24 stands. 29% 10% 25 to 44 Through many years, there developed in the Colony of New 45 to 64 Jersey an overland route, called the Great Road, running 65+ 29% from Perth Amboy to Burlington and through to Salem. The road was later called Kings Highway. It crossed Big Timber Creek where Westville now stands, therefore, it was quite natural that some sort of town should develop since fords of the large streams were few prior to and at the time of the American Revolution. As the stages crossed Big Timber Creek, there was often need for a stage stop. Thomas West built a tavern a few hundred yards away from the creek. This tavern quickly became a favorite stopping place for the travelers going to or coming from the lower counties. The oldest record of ownership of the land on which the tavern and eventually the town was built is probably contained in a deed dated September 15, 1703 which shows that Daniel Coxe purchased “400 acres of land around Timber Creek in the county of Gloucester for 44 pounds of money.”
