WELCOME It is my pleasure to welcome you to our Belgian-Canadian Business Luncheon on the Digital Economy. This extended discussion is intended to foster a bilateral innovation exchange, identifying areas of potential collaboration between key business stakeholders of our two nations. It is an opportune time for us to explore where interests converge, as the Canada European-Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) promises to reduce barriers, making trade and business relations easier. Today’s diverse digital economy is seeing a growing need for talent and knowledge exchange, with advancements and innovations shaping FinTech, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, Blockchain, Autonomous Vehicles, Industry 4.0, 5G wireless, amongst many others. The possibilities for avenues of collaboration are extensive, including: research & development, commercialization, talent, as well as policies and regulations to advance mutual economic objectives. CANADIAN GUESTS Namir Anani - ICTC Namir Anani is the President and CEO of the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC). Before joining ICTC, Mr. Anani previously led Policy Development & Research at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). He has also held several executive leadership roles in both the private and public sectors including the Department of Canadian Heritage (Director General & CEO), CGI consulting, Nortel, and Novartis (Switzerland). Robert Asselin - Blackberry Robert Asselin joined BlackBerry in 2017 as Senior Global Director, Public Policy. He was recently appointed Senior Fellow at the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto and at the Public Policy Forum in Ottawa. For the last two years, he served as Policy and Budget Director to Canada Finance Minister. From 2007 to 2015, Mr. Asselin was the Associate Director of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. In 2014, he was a Visiting Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. CANADIAN GUESTS Jeremy Depow - ICTC Jeremy Depow is Vice President of Policy and Research for ICTC. He works to support ICTC’s objectives of strengthening Canada’s digital advantage with the aim of enabling a globally competitive and inclusive digital economy. Prior to joining ICTC, Mr. Depow served as Executive Director of Canada’s Digital Policy Forum, a national think-tank, which he founded to intensify dialogue and collaboration on building digital policy in Ottawa. Mr. Depow has served in the corporate affairs offices of Pfizer Inc., Intuit, and BIOTECanada, and was an information and communications technology industry analyst for the Boston based Yankee Group. Jaime Leverton - Cogeco Peer 1 Jaime Leverton is Vice President and General Manager, Canada and Asia Pacific (APAC), at Cogeco Peer 1 and is responsible for creating and driving revenue programs in Canada and APAC. Her wealth of business experience has re-energized Cogeco Peer 1's growth objective to substantially expand their existing business and develop new indirect sales strategies through a network of partners. Over the past 15+ years, Ms. Leverton has worked in various executive roles with National Bank, BlackBerry, Bell Canada, and IBM Canada. In her role with Cogeco Peer 1, Ms. Leverton oversees sales, customer management, and the delivery of the full suite of ICT solutions to medium and enterprise customers across Canada and APAC. CANADIAN GUESTS Rodney MacDonald - Intuit With more than 10 years in public policy and advocacy, Rodney MacDonald began his career in the Office of the Prime Minister in 2007, and went on to serve in policy roles for the Ministers of ESDC and Industry Canada. In 2010, Mr. MacDonald left the political arena for the private sector, holding senior public policy roles with Visa Canada and Toyota Canada. Rodney works with authorities in the United Kingdom, France and Canada to look at ways to foster digital adoption among small businesses, and encourage tax compliance through innovative public-private partnerships with the tech sector. Alexandra MacEachern - ICTC Alexandra MacEachern is a lawyer with a passion for technology. She is currently the director of policy and outreach at the Information and Communications Technology Council, an independent research organization which focuses on technology issues. She has worked previously as a legal policy advisor to the Ministers of Justice, Public Safety, and Industry. Her policy experience ranges from combating human trafficking, to intellectual property, to the digital economy. CANADIAN GUESTS Iliana Oris Valiente - Accenture Iliana Oris Valiente is widely credited for being a trailblazer in the blockchain space, having been among the first to recognize the tremendous impact of this traditionally "hacker" technology on the enterprise world. Her focus has been on exponential technology, entrepreneurship and bridging the gap between the corporate world and the start- up communities. At Acenture, Ms. Valiente is responsible for strategy initiatives and overseeing projects to conceptualize and build blockchain solutions across industries, with a focus on FSI, supply chain, healthcare and the public sector. Patrick Robert - Amazon Patrick Robert is Manager of Public Policy at Amazon.ca since 2017. Originally from Gatineau, Quebec, he obtained a Political Science degree and a Law degree from the University of Ottawa. Patrick practiced public policy at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP and Gowling WLG. He was recognized by The Hill Times as a Top 100 Government Relations experts. Patrick he was an advisor for Minister of the Environment and Press Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board. From 2011 to 2016, Patrick was a member of the Board of Directors of Camp Trillium, an Ontario based program that offers year- round recreational experiences to bring children with cancer and their families together. In 2009, he joined Savoir-faire Linux as the Executive Vice-President to help the develop the company. Arrived in Canada in 2014 and now Canadian, Mr. Villemer is an entrepreneur involved in the community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Université du Québec à Montréal for 5 years and he is a founding member and Vice-president of the Board of "BleuBlancTech", the French Tech Hub in Montreal. Functionalities also include interfaces for professional clinicians’ feedback, so the tele- monitoring processes can be adjusted and refined. e-Point has recently started a project with the Faculty of Medicine of King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, monitoring 125 pregnant women with diabetes. Kinepolis offers an innovative cinema concept which serves as a pioneering model within the industry. BELGIAN GUESTS Caroline Levrau - FIT Caroline Levrau works for Flanders Investment and Trade (FIT), the external governmental agency from the government of Flanders (Belgium) dealing with economic affairs, as Deputy Director Inward Investment for Latin America, Canada and Germany. Caroline has previous experience as underwriter at Credimundi (formerly Delcredere NV), a Belgian credit insurance company. After graduating from her Master in Commercial Sciences in 2003, she gained her first experiences in the Belgian Banking world. Caroline speaks Dutch, French and English and has also some basic knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese. BELGIAN GUESTS Jane Murphy – EDPO EDPO’s mission is to enable non-European companies to comply with the new European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which will come into effect on 25 May 2018. The GDPR extends to non-European companies that regularly provide goods or services to persons in the EU or that monitor the behaviour of persons in the EU. The GDPR also requires that non-European companies appoint a representative in the EU to act as a point of contact for customers in the EU and for EU data protection authorities. EDPO was established in Brussels to respond to this new legal framework and to provide services to non-European companies Frank Murari - Consulate of Belgium Mr. Murari has extended experience in trade before taking on his first post in Turkey. He relocated to Toronto in 2013. In Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan he has also organized AWEX (and tri-regional missions in Turkmenistan) every year. In 2012 a princely mission was organized in Istanbul and Ankara involving his trade office for B2B meetings, seminars, events. Currently, since July 2013, Mr. Murari has been working in Toronto with geographic jurisdiction in Ontario and Manitoba for export promotion, and for all of western Canada in investment promotion. BELGIAN GUESTS Olivier Willocx – BECI BECI (Brussels Enterprises Commerce & Industry) is a partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Union of Enterprises in Brussels. BECI represents two thirds of jobs in Brussels and over 35,000 companies. It is a non-profit association, which is private, impartial and bilingual (French and Dutch). It is managed and funded by its members. As a natural partner of all active companies in Brussels, BECI offers them three lines of support: it represents their individual and collective interests, provides advice and assistance through a wide range of services, and helps them to build and maintain their networks of contacts.
