The purpose of this handbook is to explain our centre’s activities and to outline various policies that affect participating athletes and their families. It should be read by all prospective families so that they may become familiar with important facts and details of the centre programming. Please look over the entire document and let us know of any questions you may have. The program outlined in this document is an attempt at synthesizing many layers of golf coaching into a comprehensive and holistic program for junior golfers. The programs offered entails a considerable commitment on behalf of the families involved as well as the coaching staff, but we are confident that this centre provides programs which are among the very best in our country. The origin of this program stemmed from our personal observation that traditional golf instruction does not produce the results we would have hoped. At the end of each season, the players who work individually through golf lessons were far less advanced than those that took part in our structured group programs. While individual coaching does succeed in developing skill, the reality is that players develop faster and more comprehensively when they are part of a structured group training environment. This program is a unique opportunity which is available to only a select group of athletes in Ontario. Athletes can expect to receive the very best in coaching services, training opportunities, and peer support as they continue on their journey towards excellence in golf. This program places considerable emphasis on developing “champion traits” in all facets of life and particularly in those areas that most impact golf development. As such, athletes in the program will receive guidance on themes like time- management, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, competitive planning, tactical strategies, and technical development. The goal of our program is: a To provide an exceptional golf training program for our athletes. a To prepare athletes for competition on a regional and provincial level. a To support athletes with leading-edge research and information. a To assist families with navigating the competitive golf landscape. i.) Athlete Benefits The 2019 Program is designed to give athletes the best possible training and support for their development as an athlete. As mentioned in the introduction, the goal of this program is to provide a holistic approach to skill development which encompasses all of the segments required. As such, we have outlined the many layers of our program below: 1. Private coaching sessions 2. Group training sessions 3. On-course coaching 4. Performance analysis and support in competition 5. Competitive Schedule Planning 5. Nutrition and hydration plans for competitive golfers 6. Mental skills analysis and monitoring 7. Golf performance lab package 8. Ongoing short game testing and training 9. Rules of Golf These benefits will be introduced at varying times throughout the season and are sensitive to the “periodization” schedule which is outlined in the next section ii.) Description of Benefits Golf Nutrition Nutrition also has a major impact on the performance of a developing golfer and such will be covered in detail throughout the program. Players will be introduced to strategies for making proper nutrition and hydration a priority on and off the golf course. Equipment Evaluations Properly fitted equipment is integral for competitive players and will be monitored throughout the season. Fittings will be done by Jody Boutin with the purpose of evaluating player’s equipment and recommending any necessary changes. Reports / Planning We will be spending time with each athlete to develop a performance plan for the season as well as making sure that competitive schedules are constructed appropriately. ii.) Description of Benefits cont. Parent-Coach Communication Parent information sessions will help to keep parents informed on the progress of their child’s golfing development throughout the course of the year. This also gives the parent an opportunity to provide feedback and discuss any issues which arise. Parents are encouraged to contact the coaches on a regular basis but to do so outside of the scheduled training times. See parent section for more detailed information of “Golf Parenting” Mental Game Players are encouraged to purchase and read “How Great Golfers Think” by Bob Skura and can expect to be introduced to the core principles of mental game strategies on an ongoing basis based on the works of registered sports psychologist, Dr. Dana Sinclair. Optional Golf Performance Lab Package (TPI test) Athletes are encouraged to schedule an appointment at the golf performance lab at Chiropractic Plus in Newmarket to complete a golf fitness assessment with their TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified Doctors. First, they will do a TPI Certified golf fitness assessment followed by a 3-dimensional swing analysis. The doctors will review the results with you, assign an exercise plan and provide you with a summary to go through with your coaches. Additional fee required. Winter Training Beginning in February and running through the end of March the Cardinal Executive dining room will be used as our winter facility. The Academy is located on the third floor of Cardinal’s main clubhouse and boasts an array of industry leading technology. The Winter Phase is an excellent opportunity for your JGDC player to continue developing their skills, keep the rust off during the cold winter months and maintain continuity of coaching. All of these factors will certainly aid in your JGDC players’ overall golf development and give them a real jump on the upcoming season. Additional fee required. iii.) Periodization Plan The 2019 training program has been developed to ensure that performance is peaking in time for competition. Athletes today must be wary of overplaying and are at risk of burning out if proper attention is not paid to these details. Simply put, there is a right time for training each of the skills related to competitive golf, and athletes must be careful not to focus on the wrong facets of their game at the wrong time of year. Therefore, it must be understood that there are specific times throughout the year in which certain skill development areas are emphasized over others. The best time to make changes or improvements in most skill sets is in the off-season, as performance should not be a concern in these months. Players should not be competing when they are trying to modify their skills, nor should they be modifying their skills during the competitive season. We use a simple Traffic Light system to illustrate our periodization plan for the program. TRAFFIC LIGHT CALENDER The traffic light rules are a simple way to plan a junior golfer’s training focus which takes into consideration the important times of the year where competing / peaking is a priority. Optimal performance will only occur when the player, parents, and coaches all understand the importance of this periodization model. Green is Go - this marks the time when you are away from competition and changes to skill sets can be made. This is typically a time when you are working on making improvements / changes to your body and swing with your coaches. Performance at this stage is not a priority, and this time of year can often try the patience of athletes as they must put in countless hours of practice in order to ingrain the changes they are committed to making. Amber is Transition is the time when you are getting ready for performance and serves as a period of transferring changes made in the “green zone”. It also defines when you are returning to full golf participation and full practice sessions and road-testing your body and swing changes. Considerable attention should be spent on training and playing golf – transferring your skills to the golf course. Red is Stop - This is the time when you will be playing in competition and want to maximize performance in the skill set. All of your work in the “green” zone will prepare you for this time. It must be understood that you should not be trying to make major changes to technique during this phase, but merely create heightened awareness of our patterns. Players in this phase play lots of golf and keep detailed statistics and self-evaluations relating to their performance. From a physical perspective, you taper off your training and focus on tournament preparation and recovery. Please refer to “Appendix” section for a detailed outline of our Periodization Plan which documents the skill sets which will be developed throughout the year. iv.) Session Descriptions The three core offerings in the Silver Program are: 1. Group Golf Training sessions 2. Group On-Course Training sessions 3. Private Golf Coaching 1. GROUP TRAINING & SUPERVISED PRACTICE Time: 90 minutes Location: Cardinal Golf Club Description: Group training sessions are structured “golf practices” where players benefit from feedback from coaches and their peers. These sessions cover a variety of topics such as mental game strategies, ball flight laws, and transfer training. These sessions also allow players to reinforce the topics covered in their individual coaching sessions. These are an integral component of the program and allow athletes to get “quality” hours of practice under the supervision of our coaches. 2. GROUP ON-COURSE TRAINING Time: 3.5 hours Location: Cardinal’s East Wing, West Wing, Kettle Creek and RedCrest Golf Courses Description: On-course training is designed to enable players to learn how to apply the skills that have been developed during training sessions. During these on-course coaching sessions, the coach provides guidance in the skills of decision-making as it pertains to club and shot selection, self-management, rules of golf and mental skills. These sessions play an important role in allowing the coach to make note of each players progress and the skills that they need to develop further. Competitive games are regularly played to create the most accurate representative of tournament golf. 3. INDIVIDUAL COACHING Time: 30 minutes Location: Cardinal Driving Range Description: Individual sessions include the use of various learning tools such as the V1 video system or the Flightscope launch monitor and are booked online using the instructor’s lesson scheduler. COMPETITIVE PATHWAY Competition is a major component of our player development model. Tournament scheduling will typically be done in early May with event recommendations based on the player’s level of skill development. The coaches will work in conjunction with the athlete and parents to come up with the most appropriate competitive calendar. As players work to build a resume that will attract attention from Universities and Colleges, it is important to clarify the path to this goal. Simply put, players earn points when they compete in certain high-profile events, and these points translate into standings on a National “Order of Merit”. The best and surest way to get recognized is to hold a good standing on this Order of Merit. By progressing from the Regional to Provincial, and then to National level, players will undoubtedly become strong players with polished resumes on their way to fulfilling their goals. Athletes are recommended to play in roughly 5 - 10 competitive events a season. A typical season would have athletes playing in 1 - 2 local, 4 – 6 regional /district, 2 - 3 provincial events, and 1 national event. The graphic below illustrates the progression from one competitive level to the next: • International Events – Players should beware of placing too much focus on “playing in the states”. It is important to progress up the ladder at the right pace, and often the US events require lots of expense with little return. Although, players who have competed on the National stage should begin to explore this option. • National Events – A realistic but challenging goal. Top 35 players at the Ontario Junior go to the Nationals. Golf Canada also puts on “Future Links” events which have strong fields and require a solid resume to get in. • GAO Events – These act as showcases for the top players in the province and act as qualifiers for National events. Qualifying for these brings a player to the “Provincial Level”. • GAO Qualifying rounds – These become very important as when you qualify you gain access to other big events. One day qualifiers are challenging, and require proper preparation. • Invitationals – Events like the “Graham Cooke” offer points for the National order of merit. These events also give players the opportunity to play at some of the best golf courses in the country for very low cost. Golf Courses such as St. George’s G&CC (Host of 2010 Canadian Open) often hold junior invitational events in the summer. • CJGA or Maple Leaf Tours – These are used to “fill out” the calendar – choose events played at courses that are familiar, and which fit the competitive calendar. • District Tours like the BAGS Tour – These events are good for honing competitive skills. • Club Events – It’s important to participate in your club events as this is your home. EQUIPMENT CONT. i. Equipment which must be brought to a coaching session It is the responsibility of the athlete to come prepared for all coaching sessions. Players should have the following items with them at a coaching session: a Golf bag with all golf clubs a Golf bag should include tees, golf balls, ball marker, divot repair tool a Hat, sunblock, umbrella & rain jacket a Proper golf attire – this includes proper golf shoes a Bottle of water and snacks ii. Importance of properly fitted golf clubs Properly fitted golf clubs is a very important variable for the success of a competitive junior golfer. Imagine how difficult running a marathon would be with an improper shoe size! We often see this example happen in golf when we decide to buy golf clubs “off the rack”. Throughout a junior golfer’s physical development, they will often go through significant changes to their body type. Increases in height, weight, and muscle mass greatly alter the type of golf clubs which should be used. Therefore, we recommend that juniors have their equipment checked on a regular basis. More specifically, we often see putter length as one of the biggest issues which need to be addressed in junior golfers. Custom fitting variables which need to be monitored should include: - Lie angle - Shaft length, type (steel vs. graphite), and flex - Wedges groove depth - Grip size Parents must understand that equipment will likely be needed to be changed or altered on a frequent basis. Equipment changes will be most frequent between the ages of 11 – 15 when a young athlete’s growth rate is typically accelerated. During this time period, it is recommended that you find a custom clubmaker in your area to help you with this process. Most retail golf stores do not carry an extensive enough inventory of club options for junior golfers. PARENTS SECTION Parents play an important role in the development of the junior golf athlete. To have a successful program there must be understanding and cooperation among parents, golfers, and coaches. The progress your youngster makes depends to a great extent on this triangular relationship. It is with this in mind that we ask you to consider this section as you join the Cardinal Golf Development Centre and reacquaint yourself with this section if you are a returning CGDC parent. You have done a great deal to raise your child. You create the environment in which they are growing up. Your child is a product of your values, the structure you have provided, and the model you have been. Human nature, however, is such that a parent loses some of his/her ability to remain detached and objective in matters concerning his/hers children’s athletics. The following guidelines will help you keep your child’s development in the proper perspective and help your child reach his/her full potential as an athlete. COACH, PARENT, PLAYER INTERACTION The Coach is THE COACH: We want your junior golfer to relate to his or her coach as soon as possible concerning golfing matters. This relationship between coach and golfer produces the best results. When parents interfere with opinions as to how the golfer should play or train, it causes considerable, and often times insurmountable, confusion as to whom the golfer should listen to. If you have a problem, concern, or complaint, please contact the coach. Best kind of parent: The coach’s job is to motivate and constructively criticize the golfer’s performance. It is the parent’s job to supply the love, recognition, and encouragement necessary to make the child work harder in practice, which in turn gives him/her the confidence to perform well in competition. PARENTS RESPONSIBILITIES It is essential for the specific roles of the parent to be clearly defined in order for success. a Provide child with unconditional support regardless of their golf performance a Do not teach your child golf - allow the coaches to do their job a Listen and take advice from coaching staff a Communicate openly and honestly with coaching staff a Please make every effort to have your golfers to their coaching session on time. a Stay away from athletes and coaches during coaching sessions a Be sure that your own expectations are in line with your child’s – but understand the difference between you and them a Become educated about the game of golf - learn to appreciate the difficulty and the allure of the game a Understand how one progresses through the sport of golf – skill acquisition is a long-term process, often with many bumps along the road a Compliment a young athlete’s growth with basic understanding of nutrition and recovery and encourage good athletic behaviors (proper sleep, hydration, etc.) a Be a role model i.e. Active parents tend to produce active children – the reverse is also true Mailing Address: 2740 Davis Drive West Newmarket, ON, L0G 1J0 2019 HANDBOOK Phone: (905) 716-0031 SILVER PROGRAM (SP) E-mail: jodyb@cardinalgolfclub.com 13
“THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PARENTS OF ATHLETIC CHILDREN” I - Make sure your child knows that - win or lose, scared or heroic – you love him/her, appreciate their efforts and are not disappointed in them. This will allow then to do their best without a fear of failure. Be the person in their life they can look to for constant positive reinforcement. II -Try your best to be completely honest about your child’s athletic ability, his/her competitive attitude, their sportsmanship, and their actual skill level. III- Be helpful, but don’t coach him/her on the way to the golf course or on the way back, or at breakfast, and so on. It’s tough not to, but it’s a lot tougher for the child to be inundated with advice, pep talks and often critical instruction IV - Teach them to enjoy the thrill of competition, to be “out there trying,” to be working to improve his/her golf skills and attitudes. Help him/her to develop the feel for competing, for trying hard, for having fun. V- Try not to re-live your athletic life through your child in a way that creates pressure; you lost as well as won. You were frightened, you backed off at times, and you were not always heroic. Don’t pressure your child because of your pride. Athletic children need their parents so you must not withdraw. Just remember there is a thinking, feeling, sensitive free spirit out there in that uniform who needs a lot of understanding, especially when his world turns bad. If he/she is comfortable with you – win or lose – he/she is on their way to maximum achievement and enjoyment. VI - Don’t compete with the coach. If the coach becomes an authority figure, it will run from enchantment to disenchantment, etc., with your athlete. VII - Don’t compare the skill, courage, or attitudes of your child with other members of the program, at least within his/her hearing. VII - Get to know the coach so that you can be assured that his/her philosophy, attitudes, ethics, and knowledge are such that you are happy to have your child under his/her leadership. IX - Always remember that children tend to exaggerate, both when praised and when criticized. Temper your reaction and investigate before over-reacting. X - Make a point of understanding courage, and the fact that it is relative. Explain that courage is not the absence of fear, but a means of doing something in spite of fear of discomfort. CODE OF CONDUCT – CGDC The majority of the golfing experience happens on the golf course or practice facility, involving athletes and coaches. Because of this, we cannot ask parents to maintain a constant watch to ensure proper behavior from their children. As an organization with abiding responsibilities for the growth, development, safety and competitive success of dozens of young athletes, the Cardinal Golf Development Centre has created a Code of Conduct. Our Code of Conduct applies to everyone associated with the centre including golfers, coaches, parents, golf clubs, and volunteers. The Cardinal Golf Development Centre strives to ensure a safe environment for its members and endeavors to foster healthy relationships among its golfers.
