GENERAL NOTES ETIQUETTE The lowest handicap marker in any group of players shall be captain of that group and is responsible for the correct etiquette and care of the course by that group, as outlined below. COURTESY ON THE COURSE Safety and General Courtesy: Before playing a stroke or making a practice swing, the player should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like which may be moved by the stroke or swing. No one should move, talk or stand close to or directly behind the ball or the hole when a player is addressing the ball or making a stroke. No player should play until the players in front are out of range. Objectionable or abusive language or behaviour likely to cause offence or injury to any other person will not be tolerated. Pace of Play: Players should play at a good pace. The Committees have set the following guidelines. Stableford, Par and Team Events – 4 hours; Stroke 4.30 hours. It is the group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it must invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Players should be ready to play as soon as it is their turn to play. When playing on or near the putting green, they should leave their bags or carts in such a position as will enable quick movement from the green and towards the next tee. When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green. Players searching for a ball should signal the players in the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not be easily found. They should not search for three minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue play until that group has passed and is out of range. 6
Care of the Course: Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others. Bunker rakes should be placed in the bottom of bunkers, parallel with the direction of play. Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player). Players should ensure that, when putting down bags or the flagstick, no damage is done to the putting green and that neither they nor their caddies damage the hole by standing close to it, in handling the flagstick or in removing the ball from the hole. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green. Players should not damage the putting green by leaning on their putters, particularly when removing the ball from the hole. Players should avoid causing damage to the course by removing divots when taking practice swings. Sand buckets shall be carried and used. USE OF CARTS ON THE COURSE Carts should always use paths where they are provided. Members are encouraged to scatter carts when exiting pathways. All signs and any local notices regulating movement of golf carts should be strictly observed, including those directing carts to the side of the fairway when approaching the green. Carts must not be driven closer than 20 metres from greens and 10 metres from tees, unless a defined cart path provides closer access. Only members who have been given special dispensation may drive closer to greens and tees. However, even for these members, carts are not permitted within 10 metres of greens or 5 metres of tees. Management recommends a maximum of 2 golf carts per group. Pull and battery buggies with slick tyres can be wheeled across greens. PRIORITY ON THE COURSE Unless otherwise determined by the Match Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. A single player has no standing and should give way to a match of any kind. 7
COMPETITION PLAY All competitions are under control of the relevant Match Committee, whose decision in any dispute shall be final. Players are responsible for the correctness of their own handicaps, to enter names on entry sheets (if available), to pay entry fees, obtain a score card and be prepared to play at least ten minutes before their tee-off time. Players are also responsible for checking the score of each hole on their card, signing the card and ensuring the Marker has signed the card and settling any disputes or doubtful point on the rules with the Committee, prior to submitting the card. All score cards must clearly show the player’s handicap. Any incorrectly marked score may result in disqualification. Cards in all competitions must be returned to the Committee as soon as possible. Match play handicap knock-out events will be played using player’s current handicaps i.e. if, during the period of a knock-out event, a player’s handicap is varied, he will always use his latest handicap. Match play events squared at the last hole will be continued until a decision is reached. In handicap events extending beyond 18 holes and beyond one day, handicaps will be those applicable on the first day of play. However, adjusted handicaps will apply in daily 18 hole events played in conjunction with the full event. All men’s pennant matches and handicap match play events will be played using the blue plates. Red markers indicate lady member’s tees. Mobile Phones: The audible emission and/or unauthorised use (including checking or sending messages) of a mobile phone by a player or his caddie on a golf course and during play is a serious breach of etiquette and is prohibited. Penalty: One warning, then disqualification. In Match Play the warning may be given by the opponent who may then make a claim in the event of subsequent use. However, players or caddies, who have a medical or other serious reason to have a mobile phone switched on, may obtain permission from the Match Committee for the phone to be turned on in mute mode and used to make or receive calls specifically related to the reason provided. 8
They should also advise their playing partners or opponent if such permission is granted. N.B. The professionals, or their delegate, is a member of the men’s match committee. MEDAL ROUNDS Ties in Men’s Medal Rounds will be decided by countback. Ties in Ladies Medal Rounds will be decided by a play off in the next stroke round. If still tied a count back will apply. ELIGIBILITY AND CONDITIONS FOR HONOUR BOARD EVENTS Eligibility for Honour Board events is restricted to full members and country members who hold their handicap at Tura. The Conditions of Play for Men’s Honour Board events will be displayed on the Notice Board prior to the event. The Conditions of Play for ALL Ladies competitions are posted on the Notice Board in the Ladies Locker Room. COMPETITION GRADES/DIVISIONS Competition grades for Men’s and Ladies are determined as required by the Committee. NON-COMPETITION PLAY All non-competition play is controlled by the Professional under the directions of Tura Beach Country Club. Members using any part of the golf course must carry a current Tura Beach Country Club Membership Card or Bag Tag. Any non-golfing member using any part of the course must pay a green fee. Members must report to the Professional before hitting off. When playing on the golf course outside of competitions, members may not play more than two balls nor play off the Blue Plates or within 5 metres of the Blue Plates. All players on the course must carry and use a sand bucket. When competitions are being played, non-competition players may not cut in anywhere on the course. APPLICATION OF HANDICAPS IN COMPETITION Stroke/Par/Stableford: Full Handicap. Match Play: Difference of Stroke Handicaps. Foursomes: Half of aggregate stroke handicaps. Handicaps of individuals must be recorded as well as half handicaps. 9
Four Ball Best Ball: (a) Stroke, Par & Stableford – Full Handicap. (b) Match Play – Reduce the stroke play handicap of all players by the handicap of the lowest handicapped player who will then play off scratch. Four Ball Medley: Both men and ladies play off full handicaps. Ladies use their own index. Ambrose: Quarter, sixth or eighth of aggregate handicap of teams of 2, 3 or 4 respectively. NOVELTY COMPETITIONS American Foursomes: Each player hits their tee shot then hits their second shot on partner’s ball. Select one ball and complete the hole, playing alternate shots. 3/8th of Aggregate Handicaps. Canadian Foursomes: Each player hits their tee shot. Select one ball and complete the hole, playing alternate shots. 3/8 of Aggregate Handicaps. Ambrose: Played in teams of 2, 3 or 4. All hit drives then select one ball. Team members may then play in any order, placing their ball within one club length of selected ball through the green (and from the same condition; rough, hazard etc), one card length on the green, until holed out. Original ball does not have to be used. Irish Fourball: The event is played with a team of four. The score for each hole is the sum of the best two Stableford scores obtained by any 2 of the 4 in the team, or as may be determined by the Match Committee for that day. Par Bisque: Full handicap strokes used on holes of player’s choice with number of strokes used for each hole unlimited until all used. Player must nominate number of shots used on each hole before teeing off on next hole. No allowance for unused shots. TIES Ties in Honour Board events, as well as Ladies Monthly Medals, will be decided by play-off. Ties in other events will be decided by countback. PRACTICE ON THE COURSE A competitor must not practise on the course before any day of competition except in the designated practice facilities (practice range, practice putting green and the nets) – exception Match Play. The restriction on using no more than two balls in non-competition 10
play also applies when practising on the course except when using the designated practice facilities. Any member practising on the course must give way to any players playing a round of golf. When practising on the course, particular care must be taken to repair divot marks. When competitions are being played non-competition players may not cut in anywhere on the course. Playing off the Blue Plates or within 5 metres of the Blue Plates is PROHIBITED. DRESS ON THE COURSE Members and their guests are required to be neatly and correctly attired both on the course and in the Clubhouse. Footwear must be neat and tidy. Bare feet, Thongs and ribbed sole shoes are not permitted. The Committees reserve the right to consider other forms of dress unacceptable.
