10 September 2018 Coming Events Stephanie Record, Executive Director Crisis Nursery of Champaign County Board Meeting to Follow Luncheon I’m pleased to report that Stephanie Record will be with us after a 26-month hiatus to update us on what’s happened at the Crisis Nursery since her last visit. The Nursery doubled allowing them to accommodate more children in need each day. Nancy volunteers every Friday morning and loves the place and the kids. I also plan on presenting Stephanie with our usual carload of supplies. 17 September 2018 Exchange Club Picnic Hosts Dottie & Walt Mikucki The date has been set and we will be having our picnic this week in September at Dottie & Walt Mikucki's home in the Maynard Lake Subdivision. This is always one of the the fun events of the year so you don't want to miss out on the great food and fellowship. It is never too early to start planning which of your favorite covered dishes you might bring. I estimate the cost to be about $7.00 / person to cover the rotisserie chicken, etc. Not too bad huh? We now have confirmation Walt that Jan Bahr &Ernie Hoffman, John and JoAnn Smith, John & Judy Hummel will all be attending. I am really looking forward to the good food (JoAnn’s deviled eggs), as well as the all the fun and fellowship we have at Walt & Dottie’s. 24 September 2018 Earthquakes & Mine Subsidence in Illinois Robert Bauer, Illinois State Geological Survey Mr. Bauer is the Principal State Engineering Geologist Quaternary (don’t ask me what a Quaternary is) with the ISGS located in on West Peabody Drive on the U of I Campus. His major responsibilities include Coal Mine Subsidence, earthquake emergency response, induced seismicity, geomechanics & CO2 sequestration, soil & rock properties & foundations and excavation. We had an associate of Mr. Bauer, Sallie Greenberg, speak to us last March on the Decatur Basin C02 Sequestration Project which was a very interesting and educational program. It will be a great program for guests and potential new members. (This is also an alert for Walt Mikucki.) 1 & 15 October 2018 Programs to be Determined If we don’t take a club tour one of these weeks we’ll have a speaker. Let me know next Monday if you have a good idea for a tour. I aim to please.
8 October 2018 (Monday) Coming Events Columbus Day – No Meeting Today In keeping with established tradition we will not have a meeting this week due to Columbus Day. Enjoy the time with your family and friends and return on the 15th raring to go. Now that I think about it I will bet old Chris Columbus would say you should go ahead and take the day off. Take a hike through McCormick's Creek, the Shades State Park, Starved Rock, Turkey Run, Starved Rock or take a boat ride somewhere. Most of all get out of the house and enjoy the changing fall colors with family and friends while the colors last. And if you’re really brave, take Nancy and me with you on your trip. 20 October 2018 (Saturday) National Day of Service at Scott Park Although this is a tentative date and subject to change it’s about 90% certain. Like the past several years we'll clean up Scott Park for our National Day of Service project. Nancy Williams is the committee chair and she will ask members to sign up to help at the October 1st & 15th meetings. For several years we cleaned up Johnston Park in the Western part of Champaign named after our own Champaign Club’s Charter Secretary Seely Johnston. A few years ago we decided to change and clean up Scott Park on the edge of the Former Committee Chair University of Illinois campus because it was in Frank Scantlebury need of a good cleaning more than Johnston Park. 3 November 2018 Lincolnland District Fall Educational Conference All right, all right, that’s not the hotel we’ll be at but it will be fun anyway. The Fall Educational Conference will be held at The Chateau Hotel & Conf. Center. I know it seems like a long time off but you need to mark the date on your calendar now. Registration is 8:30-9:00 AM followed by the Confer- ence until 4:00 PM. The Conference is free & includes lunch. 4 November 2018 – Daylight Savings Time Daylight Saving Time, which your editor loves, gives us the opportunity to enjoy sunny summer evenings by moving our clocks an hour forward each spring. Ben Franklin conceived the idea. (If you ask me, we should remain on Daylight Saving Time year around.) Most of the United States begins Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 AM on the 2nd Sunday in March and reverts back to Standard Time on the first Sunday in November (Boo). In the United States each time zone switches simultaneously. There is one other solution but it’s not a good one. You could move 35 miles east across the Indiana State Line and you’d gain about 55 minutes of daylight on a Winters evening so you don’t have to return home after work in the dark.
For Campus Florist Owner, The Bloom is Finally off The Rose Thursday, August 23, 2018 – Ben Zigerman When I home late last Thursday afternoon from a visit to the Route 66 Museum and the Livingston County War Museum in Pontiac, IL, I picked up The News-Gazette only to find Anne Johnston on the front page of the newspaper. I was shocked to read she was retiring after 77 years in the florist business and closing down Campus Florist in October, the shop she started with her mother when Anne was a freshman at the University of Illinois. After reading the following article I understood why she was closing down the shop but I’m still sorry to see it happen. It’s such a big part of who Anne is and I have no idea where to order flowers for Nancy in the future. Photo by: Robin Scholz/The News-Gazette Anne P. Johnston talks about her 77-year run as owner of Campus Florist on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at the business at 609 East Green Street, Champaign. She plans to close by the end of October.
CHAMPAIGN — In the years since it opened, Campus Florist started on South Wright Street, but Campus Florist survived 2 fires, student protesters moved to its Green Street location a few months later smashing its windows and a burglary in 1997 that left that year for more visibility and a larger shop. owner Anne P. She's planning to close the shop at the end of October. The key to her success: "People like us," she said. "You don't have friends if you didn't do something right." Those friends have been calling since signs were put up Tuesday announcing Campus Florist is closing soon. "The sign went up, and the phone keeps ringing," she said. Johnston said she has friends all over the world that attended the UI. "In fact, just 2 weeks ago, I had a friend from Thai- land here who came up for my birthday," she said. Johnston said the store will have closing sales, and "I always told them I wasn't going to retire, and I had vases are already on sale. no intentions of retiring until this mess came up about She also owns the building, but said she doesn't the high-rise, and it just seemed the time to call it know what will replace Campus Florist. quits," she said. "I wanted to make it to the 80th birthday (of the store), but that wasn't the case." Until it closes, Johnston will continue to work every day the store is open. A 17-story high-rise is slated to be built on the southeast corner of Sixth and Green streets. While it "I come down every day. I can't work the way I won't directly impact her building, Johnston said she used to, but I'm here," she said. Soon, "there won't didn't want to deal with the construction. be any place to go, but I'll find a place." "It's going to be bad for anyone out here while they are tearing it down," she said. "Because when they tear it down, they're going to go through the alleyway, & we'll have no place to park. ... I'm too old for that." The high-rise is also leading to the closing next month of Campustown bars Firehaus & The Clybourne, and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship's The Loft above HomeTown Pantry already moved across the street. Tom Harrington Jr., director of acquisitions for CORE, the high-rise's developer, declined comment. Johnston, who jokes that she's 125 years old when asked, opened the business in 1941 after she moved from Chicago to Champaign to study floriculture at the University of Illinois.
American Military Hero & United States Senator John Sidney McCain III Dies 29 August 1936 – 25 August 2018 Editor’s Note – Very few people during my lifetime have I respected more than John McCain. I didn’t always agree with some of his voting decisions but nothing could diminish my admiration for his service to our country in the Navy during the Vietnam War and later as a United States Senator. R.I.P. Captain McCain, you’ve earned it. Family Announcement – “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 PM on August 25, 2018," a statement from McCain's office said. "With the Senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 60 years." McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer early in his sixth term as senator. The type of brain tumor with which he was afflicted, glioblastoma, is particularly aggressive and difficult to treat. He had been receiving chemotherapy, but his family announced in August that he would no longer seek medical treatment. McCain is survived by his 7 children and his second wife, Cindy, whom he married in 1980 following a 15-year marriage to Carol Shepp. Daughter Meghan McCain – “My father, United States Senator John Sidney McCain III, departed this life today. I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning,” she wrote. “In the 33 years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me & supported me in all things. He loved me, and I loved him. His love and his care, ever present, always unfailing, took me from a girl to a woman – and he showed me what it is to be a man. All that I am is thanks to him. Now that he is gone, the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love. My father’s passing comes with sorrow and grief for me, for my mother, for my brothers, and for my sisters. He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth for so very long. We know that his flame lives on, in each of us. The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad – but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us. Your prayers, for his soul and for our family, are sincerely appreciated. My father is gone, and I miss him as only as an adoring daughter can. But in this loss and in this sorry, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on earth. Today the warrior enters his true and eternal life, greeted by those who have gone before him, rising to meet the Author of All Things: ‘Their dream is ended: this is the morning’.”
John Sidney McCain III 1936 – 2018 Senator John McCain’s remarkable record of leadership embodies his unwaver- ing lifetime commitment to service. The son and grandson of distinguished Navy Admirals, Senator McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958, and served as a Naval Aviator for 22 years, including in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. On October 26, 1967, during Senator McCain’s 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam, a missile struck his plane and forced him to eject, knocking him unconscious and breaking both his arms and his leg. Senator McCain was taken as a prisoner of war into the now-infamous “Hanoi Hilton,” where he was denied needed medical treatment and subjected to years of torture by the North Vietnamese. He spent much of his time as a prisoner of war in solitary confinement, aided by his faith and the friendships of his fellow POWs. When he was finally released and able to return home years later, Senator McCain continued his service by regaining his naval flight status. His last Navy duty assignment was to serve as the Naval Liaison to the United States Senate. He retired from the Navy in 1981. His naval honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Senator McCain was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 and elected to the United States Senate in 1986. He was the unsuccessful Republican Party’s nominee for President in the 2008 election. Over the course of his political career, Senator McCain served as Chairman of the Senate Committees on Indian Affairs, Commerce, Science and Transportation, and most recently, Armed Services. Senator McCain is survived by his wife, Cindy, 7 children and 5 grandchildren. He will be laid to rest at the United States Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland. I've heard of raining cats & Huh? I know that it rains cats and dogs dogs but this is ridiculous. but Men?
Last week when Mike was home from Phoenix we went to Ohio to visit Scott and family and we spent a day at the Cincinnati Zoo and the Newport, KY Aquarium. I’ve wanted to visit the Cincinnati Zoo for many years and finally got there. Nancy & I visited the Aquarium a couple years ago but we still enjoyed going again. Watching a Cheetah spring 200 yards around a field at nearly 60 miles an hour is amazing. Seeing a 400-500 lbs. Gorilla in person was amazing. I knew they were big but Mshindi overwhelmed me. I never dreamed they were so large and funny. Mshindi is now 18 years old and has many good years ahead of him.
This Red River Hog is about the cutest animal in the zoo.
