COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Watch Calendar- Currently on various St. Cecilia Society Bert Melcher Wednesdays, may move Chapel to Thursdays 7:00 PM The St. Cecilia Society offers video concerts of classical music. Residents Bert and Rosemary Melcher's collection of DVDs and those of others, along with the use of Netflix, provide diverse orchestral and instrumental music, opera, and ballet. Bert often puts together a handout with information on the selection to give participants additional points of interest that may not be included on the DVD. The groups name honors St. Cecilia, the patroness of musicians and a Christian martyr executed for heresy by the Romans in 180AD and who died with a song on her lips. 4th Thursday each month Book Review IL Residents 5th Floor Exercise Room at 3:00 PM Each month, a resident selects a book and gives a review. It is not necessary that you read the book to come to the review, as the speaker for the month is the one sharing the synopsis and their insights. If you would like to be a presenter, speak with Elinor Christiansen. Chapel Bible Study Dan Whittaker Tuesdays at 1:30 PM *exception- last Thursday in Private Dining Room This class reads passages from the bible and discusses them. All denominations attend this group led by Dan Whittaker. They work from the book "Life Lessons from Luke," by Max Lucado. Thursday, January 16th Spruce Up Your Memoir at 1:30 Mary Ann Butler Chapel Writing • Following months TBA Journalist and author Mary Ann Butler, whose memoirs have been published in The New York Times, in an anthology by Warner Books, and in Down But Not Out, will help you find your voice in writing, give some creative tips for making your memoir not read like a time line, and overall help spruce up you memoir.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Play Reading Irwin Kirk February- Date TBA Chapel Come enjoy reading plays, some by playwrights you know, and, some plays will surprise you. The group will read two plays, one dark, the other, humorous. No acting is ability is necessary. The first person reads the lines of the first actor, the next person reads the lines of the next actor, and on we go! Separate actor parts are not assigned, so you may read for various characters in the same play. Enjoy the human dimension in each play and the playwright's creative text. The Rope, by Eugene O'Neill, Marriage Proposal, by Anton Chekhov 3rd Monday each month HC Media Room Science of Food Clint Rasti, RD at 2:30 PM Join Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Clint Rasti, each month as he explores the fascinating science of food. He will discuss food preparation and science principles and how they relate to our everyday world. You'll learn the science of how food is prepared, utilized and ultimately consumed and how these topics are relevant to our current food culture. Book Club Jennifer Weber To Be Announced To Be Announced Notices will be posted when a new book is available and information will also be available in the Events Book at Concierge. The club will meet 3-4 weeks later to discuss the selection. Books are supplied by the Arapahoe County Library. Although there is a limit of 10 people who can borrow the book, you can always purchase it or borrow it at your preferred library. 2nd Saturday of each Fabric Origami Rana Abeyta AL Activity Room month at 3:00 Origami is the art of folding paper into various shapes like animals, flowers, and stars. Rana is going to take this beautiful art a step further and teach you how to fold fabric into these shapes. Using fabric will make the art more durable, and the various patterns and fabrics will add a unique touch to each piece. 3rd Wednesday Each month at 1:00 PM Spanish Class Mirna Pineda AL Activity Room *exception- No class in January Learn to speak Spanish, the second most spoken language in the United States. Many of our Associates speak Spanish, so there will be plenty of people to practice with between classes. You'll be learning from Mirna whose native language is Spanish, so you can learn correct pronunciation and common phrases. You'll sound authentic in no time!
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Last Wednesday each Craft with Kara Kara Gibson AL Activity Room month at 3:30 PM Kara will help you make a different craft each month. She provides the supplies and assistance needed to help you make a keepsake for yourself or a gift for a friend. 1st Wednesday each Men's Group Anthony Smith-Benn TBA month at 1:30 PM Men, get together to meet the other men in the community and to discuss topics interesting to you. This laid back group will meet in various locations, from the outside patios when the weather is nice to a cozy nook in the library for a change of scenery. Assisted Living Activity Learn to Play Poker Dave Jaramillo Sundays at 1:30 Room Bet, raise, call, flush, straight, fullhouse?! What do they all mean? Dave will teach you how to play various games of poker, what hands beat what, and the lingo that goes with all of this. You'll be ready for Blackhawk in no time! Physical Therapy Physical Therapy 4th Tuesday each month Community Room Discovery Series Department at 11:00AM The Physical Therapy Team will teach on various topics that will help with balance, fall prevention, strength, using assistive devices, and more. The series will kick off with "Live Well in 2020." The next months' topics will be: "Why You Need a Bedtime...No matter Your Age," "Keeping it Balanced with Tai Chi," and "Defying Gravity: What's Your Balance Like?" Collective Memoir Every Other Sunday at Sean Larson AL Activity Room Writing 1:30 PM Sean will guide and assist residents and Associates in reminiscing and writing down stories and memories. He will ask leading questions to help participants pull the most detail out of their memories. Sign Language Class & Alicia Sims Watch Calendar AL Activity Room History Of American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing, and is used by many hearing people as well. Please join our class as we learn about famous people who use sign language every day, as well as lessons in the language itself.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Technology Class Stephanie Baker Watch Calendar Chapel Learn tips and tricks for getting the most out of your smart phone, tablet, and computer. Learn how to use your phone's camera and send the pictures to family and friends, the do's and don'ts of using the internet safely, and how to check out books for free from the library from the comfort of your favorite reading chair. Each class will focus on a different topic and have plenty of time for questions as well. Bring your device to class so you can participate and learn by doing. 2nd Monday each month AL Activity Room at 1:00PM Kathleen Presents Kathleen Arnold • 2nd Thursday each IL Community Room month at 11:00 AM Kathleen Arnold joins us to discuss a wide range of topics that will transport you to different times throughout our history in locations around the globe. In May, she will take you on a tour of the elite French Fashion Houses and their designers, focusing on Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Hubert Givenchy. 1st Monday each month: AL Activity Room 10:30 AM Curious Dragonfly Trina Terrell • Science Program 1:00 PM *exception: February 7th Chapel Trina shares her passion for teaching Science and Nature in a fun and creative way. She encourages questions and often has very hands on classes to really help you understand the topic. Her classes touch on many areas of science: Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Astronomy and Physics. 1st Wednesday each Active Minds: World Active Minds Presenters month at 7:15 PM IL Community Room Issues *exception January 8th Active Minds is dedicated to expanding lives and minds by providing outstanding educational programs for seniors and adults. Programs range from international current events, to history, biography, and more. Each topic is researched in depth and presented within their historical contexts, with multiple perspectives presented. Attendees are challenged to look beyond their own opinions and political leanings to grapple with current events on a deeper level, encouraged to share their own experiences, and to draw parallels between the historical perspective and current events or contemporary figures.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION 1st and 3rd Tuesday each Greeting Card Class Robin Maginess 5th Floor Card Room month at 11:00 Instructor Robin Maginess provides all the supplies, assistance, and encouragement needed to make beautiful greeting cards anyone would be honored to receive. 2nd and 4th Monday Line dancing Class Creative Dance Studios Community Room each month at 1:00 Line Dancing is good for your body and brain. It’s a repetitive style dance– once you’ve learned the steps, often you turn and repeat them facing a different direction. Creative Dance’s experienced instructors have tailored the dances to suit ALL ability levels, whether sitting or standing. Come learn the difference between a heel split and heel stomp to great western music! Active Minds: Music 4th Monday each month Active Minds Presenters IL Community Room Appreciation at 7:15 PM Music appreciation topics are designed to give attendees insight into various aspects of the world of music. Covered topics include composers, great works of music, musical styles, and more. Each class is supplemented with samples of music to illustrate the ideas presented in the program. 1st and 3rd Thursday Guide Dogs for the Blind each month at 6:30 PM Guide Dogs for the Blind IL Community Room Training Fridays at 6:30 *Puppy Class Liberty on Leashes puppy raising club for Guide Dogs for the Blind, headquartered in San Rafael, CA, has their training meetings at St. Andrew's Village. The puppies and their trainers, meet to work on manners, skills, and basic obedience. Residents, friends, and family members are welcome to attend. St. Andrew's Singers Rekah Ohal Tuesdays at 3:30 PM IL Community Room This group of singers, made up of IL residents, sing songs ranging from Roger Miller to Doris Day. The members select the music and work together with guidance from Zakk, who accompanies on piano, to create entertaining and uplifting music to be enjoyed by all! They are always looking for new music lovers to join the group.
COURSES FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Thursday, January 30th at 2:00 Living History Series Historical Figures IL Community Room • April 16th at 2:00 In this series, professional storytellers will come in costume and be famous historical figures. In character, they will talk about their life and contributions to the world. In January, we will be joined by Marie Curie, who will talk about her discovery of radium and how she opened the doors of Science to women. In April, Abraham Lincoln will walk you through the momentous events in his last two weeks, from the March 27th meeting with Generals Grant and Sherman and Admiral Foote at City Point, until the Lincolns were seated at Ford's Theatre on Good Friday April 14, 1865 Expressions In Paint Class Kristen Muench Tuesdays at 1:00 IL Community Room This class does not require talent or experience, just a desire to explore your inner creative self. You're guaranteed to surprise yourself though, with Kristen's encouragement and gentle guidance, in creating your own masterpiece. You'll practice fundamental "seeing" skills, based on photograph or still life, which emphasizes simple shapes and proportion. All supplies are provided by the instructor, including a genuine love for the magical art of watercolor. The class employs levity, humor, beautiful music (and sometimes chocolate) to overcome anxiety around the creative process. The class is great for all levels of experience. Even those with previous experience will learn new ways of seeing and explore new techniques, all while having extraordinary soul fulfilling sessions of creative expression and fun!
Faculty Biographies NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Rana Abeyta Ceramics Rana was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming and moved to Colorado in 2004. She became a CNA in 2000, and recently became an Activity Assistant where she discovered her passion for crafts. She enjoys spending time with her huge family that includes her husband, six children, seven grand-children, three dogs, and three cats. Her 7th grand-child was welcomed into the world just weeks ago! Rana enjoys fishing, camping, and crafting. Kathleen Arnold Kathleen Presents Kathleen Arnold puts passion, personality and her innovative ideas into creating original educational programs that will not only fascinate you, but leave you yearning for more learning! Her goal as an educator and presenter is to bring audiences unique topics that are thoroughly researched, and present them in an artistic style. Growing up an Air Force ‘brat’ of the Greatest Generation, she brings her personal experiences, humor, and insights into each presentation. With a background as a Congressional Investigator, she methodically plans, researches, and develops topics using multiple sources, including current media technologies. Her lectures and Power Points are engaging, captivating, intellectually stimulating, and motivating! Stephanie Baker Technology Class Stephanie moved to Colorado from North Carolina about 13 years ago. She originally worked with adults and children with developmental disabilities before switching to activities in retirement communities. She loves to read with her cat Jenny curled in her lap, cooking and trying new restaurants, running and paddle boarding, and would eventually like to do more travelling. Mary Ann Butler Spruce Up Your Memoirs Mary Ann is an accomplished writer who has been published in The New York Times, in an anthology by Warner Books, and in Down But not out. She is the author of a trilogy: "The fictional Account of One American Family from 1759 through 1910. Dave Jaramillo Learn to Play Poker Dave is a Colorado native. He grew up in Golden and attended High School at Lakewood High. When he's not busy driving for St. Andrew's or Lyft, he likes to watch whatever is good on Netflix, horror movies, and keeping up with the news. When he can get away, he loves to be in nature. He tries to go on a hunting trip every year.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Irwin Kirk Play Reading Irwin grew up in Oak Park, Illinois and spent most of his career as a government attorney in Washington DC. He has a daughter Julia who lives close by and a son Doug who lives in Castle Rock with his family. Irwin is a CSU graduate. He has been teaching history classes and a class about the Chinese Revolution at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) for 16 years. Sean Larsen Collective Memoir Writing Sean is a member of St. Andrew's transportation team, but focuses a lot on activities as well. Sean thrives by spending time with his family: Jaime his wife, and their sons Alan and Mark. He is a Boy Scout Troop leader for both of his boys. He takes martial arts with Mark, who is 12. His son Alan just turned 16 years old. Sean says Alan is not learning to drive at this point, that he is a freshman in high school this year which is scary enough- for Sean and Jaime, not their son! Sean also helps out as a Sunday School teacher at his church when he can. Bert Melcher St. Cecilia Society Bert went to Denver East High School followed by Dartmouth College on a Naval ROTC scholarship to earn an MS degree in Civil Engineering. The Navy sent him to London where he met, and in 1956, married Rosemary, secretary to the US Maritime Ambassador. After London, they were relocated to Boston, and then moved to Denver, where Bert shifted to the Navy Reserve and eventually retired as a Captain. His career includes: architectural engineering; planning for transportation, energy and environment; and business appraising/brokerage. He helped create Denver’s Regional Transportation District for public transit and is one of three people to serve on its Board of Directors and Colorado’s Highway Commission. They have a son in London and a daughter in Connecticut.
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Kristen Muench Expressions in Paint Class Kristen is a gifted professional painter, muralist, and sculptor. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona in 1984, augmented by studies in Guadalajara, Mexico and Florence, Italy. Frequent travels and self study throughout North America and Europe have enhanced her craft and vision. Kristen's large format watercolor paintings have won numerous awards and reside in collections throughout the country. She began painting murals in the 1980's and continues to this day. With nearly one hundred murals under her brush, Kristen's works live in public and private settings throughout the country and can be viewed on her website www.muencharts.com. Kristen has been instructing St. Andrew's residents since 2013 and also draws, paints, does pastel printmaking, and sculpture for private clients. She teaches creative proficiency through simplification using basic drawing tools and a limited palette. Under personal tutelage by this talented artist, students learn readily and with confidence while enjoying a newly found sense of self within their creative productivity. Mirna Pineda Spanish Class Mirna was born in El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, which is about 30 miles North of San Salvador. She moved to Colorado in February of 1996. She comes from a medium sized family of two brothers and one sister. They moved from El Salvador straight to Keystone Colorado, which was a big change for them! She and her brothers learned how to snowboard and ice-skate, and think that snowboarding at night is the best. She attended Breckenridge High School and Rocky Mountain Community College. She moved to Aurora in the summer of 2002 and has been here since. Mirna worked at University Hospital for over 2 years and then as the property manager for over 1000 units 4 different properties. After 12 years she wanted a change and came to St Andrews Village and is loving it! Clint Rasti, RD Food for Thought Clint Rasti is a Registered Dietitian at St. Andrew's Village, primarily working in our Health Care Community. He received his undergraduate and Dietitian Registration at the University of Northern Colorado in Greely. He grew up in Littleton and Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, running, spending time with friends, and cooking. He became a Dietitian to spread his love of various foods and to celebrate how food connects us all!
NAME OF INSTRUCTOR CLASS NAME Alicia Sims Astrology / Astronomy Class Alicia is part if the Community Life team. She originally came to Colorado from Long Island, NY. Alicia loves the outdoors, the sun, and the ocean. She came to Denver in the blizzard of ‘82 and didn’t think she would stay in Colorado because of all the snow. Since then, she has married a native of Colorado and given birth to one son, so she is here to stay. Though she can't feel salt water on her lips or jump into a wave, she thinks Colorado is beautiful. Alicia enjoys doing activities and encouraging play and learning, which brought her to St. Andrews Village. Anthony Smith-Benn Men's Group Anthony was born in Rochester, NY and moved to Colorado when he was 10 years old. He is newly married with a 5-year-old son, a baby girl on the way, as well as a puppy Rottweiler. Anthony has been in healthcare his entire career (10 years) and enjoys helping others with a smile. Some things he enjoys in his spare time are music, gaming, and spending time with family. His is biggest passions are golf and the Denver Broncos. Trina Terrell Curious Dragonfly Science Program Trina is a fun, energetic and creative person with a passion for teaching science and nature. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology and Environmental Science, Wildlife Rehabilitation, and a Secondary Science Teaching license. Trina worked for seven years as a Science teacher at Thornton High School and taught a number of subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, IB (International Baccalaureate), and Special Education. She also completed the Eden Alternative training. Trina changed careers to become a social worker in a nursing home and was awarded the 2011 CHCA Social Service Professional of the Year’ for the state of Colorado. She knew that working with this clientele was the right career for her. Sharing time with residents, she saw a need for activities that opened their minds, challenged their knowledge, and piqued their curiosity about science, nature and art. Trina began teaching science classes in the nursing home where she worked. They were an instant hit! This was the genesis of Curious Dragonfly, a way to blend the two great loves of her life: teaching science and nature and working with people of all ages. Jennifer Weber Book Club Jennifer is the Business Office Manager at St. Andrew's Village. She enjoys reading, typically completing over 100 books each year, has four cats who will reluctantly hula hoop with her, has a love for shoes, and credits herself as the inventor of the Chia Pet.
