1I was wondering if it was possible
for a number of eager disciples
ofophthalmology to meet each year
in a pleasant spot to spend some time
together, partially in scientific discourse,
partially indulging in innocuous leisure.
Albrecht von Graefe,
Founder of the DOG, 1856
DOG
Gesellschaft für Augenheilkunde
The DOG is the medical scientific association of ophthalmology
in Germany. It unites more than 7.500 ophthalmologists in
hospitals, medical and research units. One of its main scopes is
to advance scientific progress in ophthalmology and to transfer
acknowledged findings into the daily routine in clinics and
physicians’ practices.
The DOG supports scientific projects and studies, organizes
congresses and publishes scientific journals.
The high membership numbers reflect the importance of the
transfer of knowledge achieved by the DOG. Most of Germany’s
ophthalmologists and scientists in the field of ophthalmology
are members of the DOG and benefit from the various offers
in the field of information, research and training.
In cooperation with all ophthalmological disciplines, national
organizations, international partners and patient associations,
the DOG offers ophthalmological experts a wide array of com-
petencies and an excellent platform for the sharing of scientific
experiences and insights. The DOG is confident that these
competencies, experiences and insights will continue to serve
as sources of new medical discoveries providing great benefit
for patients at clinics and in physicians’ practices.Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to invite you to the DOG 2019, the 117th con-
gress of our society. The location will once again be Berlin, and
it will take place from 26 – 29 September 2019.
Ophthalmology: Our Field and its Future is the theme of the
congress to be held in the Estrel Hotel in Berlin.
Prof. Dr. Claus Cursiefen For most of us, ophthalmology is “the most beautiful specialty
President of the DOG in medicine”. In addition, it is also an extremely important,
successful and appreciated medical sub-discipline whose
supply mandate keeps growing steadily. In the interest of our
current and future patients, this is something that we can
and should advertise to those on the outside in regular
installments, so that the relevance and appeal of our “small”
specialty become more noticeable in the competition for
motivated junior staff, research funding or other resources in
the health care sector.
Intertwining foci of DOG 2019 will therefore be the commu-
nication of the fascination for our field that we and our
patients have on the one hand and on future developments
in ophthalmology on the other. How will future developments
look like in medical care, research and education within
ophthalmology?
Next to the symposia, scientific lectures, poster sessions and
courses, there will also be two new formats: one are the
“Highlights in Translational Science Sessions”, which will be
concerned with current clinically relevant hot topics in experi-
mental ophthalmology and will signal the importance of
translational research – especially including its importance in
the DOG – in the successful fight against blindness now and
in the future. The other is the “DOG International Experts Day”,
which will offer an entire day of events in English, including
interactive review formats, in addition to English-language
meetings already in the program. Not only for but also with
our ophthalmological guests from other countries will this
be a special highlight.
I am very pleased to invite you to an exciting and innovative
congress in autumn 2019 – once again in the capital city
of Germany.
With warm regards,
Claus Cursiefen

DOG-Update – Diagnostics and therapy of dry AMD
State of the Art 2019
Despite intense and ground-breaking work on the genetic
factors associated with AMD, no efficacious treatment has
been found for dry AMD and its late-stage form geographic
atrophy. There has been a focus on targeting the alternative
complement pathway but clinical trials have failed so far. Ex-
tensive genetic as well as epidemiological studies have not re-
vealed promising new targets or treatment strategies. The
late onset of the disease and the variability in the natural his-
tory of patients makes disease prediction as well as clinical
trial design challenging. This symposium will present a critical
discourse on our current understanding of AMD with an em-
phasis on pathobiology, computational approaches and sys-
tems biology.

Retina: The promising future
in ophthalmology
The molecular biological evaluation of vitreous samples
obtained by pars plana vitrectomy due to rhegmatogenous
retinal detachment is presented with special focus on the
immune modulatory cytokines. The evolution of novel imaging
methods such as optical coherence tomography angiography
is discussed, especially its current role in the differential diag-
nosis of retinal disorders. Development of the diagnostic and
treatment strategies in tumors of the posterior segment
is also a hot topic in eye research.
During this symposium, speakers from Hungary and Germany
are holding lectures with focus on „retina topics“. The major
educational objectives include sharing current knowledge and
the exchange of ideas regarding new clinical and medical ad-
vances in management of complex posterior segment disease,
as well as novel approaches to posterior segment surgery.
The presentations are followed by an interactive discussion
on the different national approaches and strategies.

Smartphones and mHealth
to revolutionize Eye Care
Mobile Technology has introduced significant changes to
eye care, finally yet importantly in low-resource settings.
Smartphones gain increasing popularity and due to their
ubiquity and multifunctionality, they might pave the way for
the next revolution in medicine. This is especially the case in
Ophthalmology, where they allow for smartphone-based
funduscopy, an easy and extremely mobile eye examination.
This symposium will highlight current promising develop-
ments and applications of smartphones and mHealth in
Ophthalmology and will show how mHealth is successfully
being utilized in other fields than Ophthalmology.

Migration is one of the key issues of our time. Tropical eye
diseases who are likely to appear in our daily clinical routine
due to migration are but one of the many aspects of migration
related to the field of ophthalmology. With presentations on
the challenges of treating traumatized refugees, successful
cooperations as an example of local development assistance
and migration aspects in international ophthalmology, the
symposium will give insights on this important issue of

15. “DOG on Demand”
“DOG on Demand” archives Congress contributions online,
thus presenting the opportunity to hear presentations or
other contributions a second time. This facility includes both
the speaker’s slides and original presentation provided that
the speaker is in agreement. It is possible to exclude specific
parts of the lecture, for example for legal reasons.
“DOG on Demand” is a particularly important and useful
facility for participants. The DOG is therefore extremely
grateful to all speakers who agree to this form of publication.
The DOG requests Authors to let the DOG know in advance of
the Congress whether they agree to the publication in “DOG
on Demand”. The necessary grant of rights for the use of the
presentations in “DOG on Demand” can be downloaded and
completed at: Rechteeinräumung für DOG on Demand.

Scientific Program
25The Making of the Scientific Program DOG Program Committee
and Scientific Panel
In autumn, the President invites ophthalmological clinics, Program Committee
research institutes and individuals to submit proposals for B. Seitz (Homburg/Saar), Chair
scientific sessions. These proposals are then examined and C. Cursiefen (Köln)
assessed in blind review by the members of the Program N. Eter (Münster)
Committee. Aided by the Program Committee and the DOG C. Erb (Berlin)
Office, the President then compiles a draft program from the Ph. Gass (München)
reviewed proposals. The basic program is then published as H. Hoerauf (Göttingen)
a preliminary program, which also serves as call for abstracts. F. G. Holz (Bonn)
Each of the submitted free papers is then reviewed by at least T. Kohnen (Frankfurt/Main)
three members of the Scientific Panel. Based on these reviews, T. Reinhard (Freiburg)
the papers will be included in the program in free paper oral U. Schiefer (Aalen/Tübingen)
