JOIN US FOR BREAKFAST!!! WILLIAM MORTON COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE FRIDAY, May 11th 7:00 – 9:00 AM Trivia Night Success! The Kinsmen Club of Gladstone held their annual Trivia Night on Friday April 6th, at the Gladstone Legion. As a club, we decided that funds raised from the evening would go to WMCI in their efforts to purchase new bleachers for the gymnasium. A total of 79 people attended the event. We were well supported by the staff of WMCI and thank Shannon Blondeau for allowing us to use the power point projector for the event. The Kinsmen are looking forward to running some more events to help aide WMCI. One plan we are looking at is the possibility of bringing Escape Rooms to Gladstone. The Kinsmen Club of Gladstone look forward to the continuation of, "Serving the Communities Greatest Need." Yours in Kin Gord Patterson President, Kinsmen Club of Gladstone 6
WMCI Theatre Club: On April 4, WMCI Theatre Club attended our fifth play called "The Humans" at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg. "The Humans" is about the Blake family who has gathered at Brigid's New York duplex for Thanksgiving. Grandma’s barely coherent. Mom’s insecure and overweight. Dad has something to hide. When secrets gradually come to light, this wonderfully messed-up family proves to be heartbreakingly human. This new play was a sensation on Broadway and won 4 Tony Awards! WMCI Choir Trip: The WMCI Choir went to the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg on April 12 to attend Student Night at the Opera where Manitoba Opera presented "La Traviata", one of the great love stories of opera reset to 1920’s Paris. In this classic tragedy of selfless devotion and ultimate sacrifice, the wealthy Alfredo and the ill-fated heroine, Violetta find true love, only to be separated by family, society and finally, death. Verdi's original brilliant, romantic music brimmed over with memorable melodies. Once again, we loved the experience! Prior to the opera, we went to Perkins for supper, followed by a stop over at Polo Park where we witnessed the news-worthy gas leak that eventually evacuated the area. 7
Band Festival: The Band portion of the Gladstone Music & Arts Festival took place on April 11th at WMCI involving all of our Gr. 6-12 band students from Gladstone, Langruth, and Plumas. It was a great day for our students to be able to perform and receive feedback from adjudicator Annette Hay. The morning was set up in a workshop format where the Beginner, Junior, and Senior Bands, as well as a recorder ensemble performed for each other and the audience, then Mrs. Hay worked with each band providing positive, constructive feedback. The morning then finished with the festival competition of beginner and junior instrumental trios. The festival continued in the afternoon with beginner and junior instrumental duets and solos, as well as violin. An instrumental workshop took place with Mrs. Hay after school for younger students to work on their playing skills. Choir Festival: The WMCI Choir took part in the choral portion of the Gladstone Music & Arts Festival on April 18th at Gladstone Elementary School. The choir received terrific feedback from adjudicator Margot Sim and received the highest mark in all vocal categories at festival this year. More updates about festival, including vocal and piano, will be reported in our next newsletter. Urgent Need for Festival Volunteers: The future of our local festival is in jeopardy! Some of our volunteers are stepping down after their many years of service. Without new people to step up and volunteer, we will not be able to run a festival next year. A public festival meeting will take place on May 15 at 7:00pm at the Gladstone United Church Annex. Your attendance to the meeting and help would be greatly appreciated! 8
Celebrating Music in Manitoba Schools, May 2018 The month of May is provincially proclaimed as Music Month. Music surrounds our daily activities from infancy to adulthood, and contributes to our lives on personal, social, and creative levels. While music is an important part of the Manitoba school curriculum throughout the year, its role in education was highlighted in May 2018 through school and community events that celebrate the skills and accomplishments of young musicians through- out the province. Community Food Cupboard Available at the Gladstone United Church, this program is set up to provide food and support for families in need. For more information or to make a donation, call the United Church office at 204-385-2719. 9
Student Council Update After Spring Break, we started off April with an April Fools’ game during lunch. Two truths and a lie was a hit with the students, and a great way to ease back into classes. The Council met and began making plans for the following months and then worked quickly together to plan a Jersey Day with a barbeque. The barbeque was to raise money for the Humbolt Broncos and the people affected by the horrific school bus accident in India. We raised close to $2,500.00 together as a community and are thankful to everyone who donated. In May, the Student Council has planned a “WESTERN” themed Spirit Week from May 7th to May 11th to go along with the Scholastic Book Fair being held at WMCI. We are also helping with the RHA Poverty Simulation that will be hosted at WMCI on May 11th, Grade 8 Spend-a-Day and planning the Grade 12 BBQ. Not only will May be a busy month, but June will also be an exciting one with planning Race Day activities and the Splash N’ Dash! Student Council Reminder: No sunflower seeds on School Property No Freezies and no Slushie Cups left in lockers Thank you! 10
All-Stars On April 14, one of our own, Justin Ejercito, attended the Provincial Graduating All–Star game and banquet. Justin was chosen from all basketball players across Manitoba, from class A to class AAA, to participate in this prestigious event held at St. Paul’s High School in Winnipeg. Not only was Justin selected to play, he won player of the game as well. This fantastic honor adds to his basketball awards, which includes three Provincial Championship All-Star selections and two Manitoba Student- Athlete of the Week awards, to go along with his Provincial Volleyball Championship All-Star selection.
