COMPLETING THE CUSTOMISABLE PACKAGE Following a successful pre-launch pilot in the US last year, SynergEyes UK has expanded its Duette Progressive hybrid line of contact lenses with a customisable centre distance lens for emerging to advanced presbyopia. The lens features the company’s proprietary Centre Distance FlexOptics technology, with an adjustable centre distance zone size ranging from 1.8 to 4mm, driven by photopic pupil size, with add powers from +0.75 to +5.00D. The new hybrid design is said to eliminate rotation issues experienced with soft toric lenses, while providing stable centration for excellent visual acuity. The Tangible Hydra-PEG coating provides increased lubricity, with the majority of Duette wearers reporting increased comfort compared to their previous contact lenses. Additionally, the SoftCushion Comfort Technology enhances tear exchange and lens movement. SynergEyes’ president and chief executive, optometrist James K. Kirchner, said: “This exciting lens enables practitioners to have the complete presbyopic package for the entire range of presbyopic needs. With this new addition to the Duette Progressive line of lenses, SynergEyes continues to be a leader in the specialty contact lens arena, working to improve outcomes by Offering tailor-made centre distances providing innovative products to bring better vision to patients.” In the comfort zone From a world first in the ortho-k lens sector to new dry eye solutions and diagnostics, we highlight some of the latest innovations to enhance both your contact lens and dry eye clinics… WORLD-FIRST ORTHO-K LENS LAUNCH Menicon has launched the world’s first orthokeratology lens in a material with a hyper Dk of 189 and US Food and Drug Administration clearance for 30 days’ continuous wear. Called Menicon Z Night, the design features fenestrations to assist with lens removal and prevent lens binding, promoting “complete control” over lens centration with tangent curve lens geometry. It is fitted using the company’s Easyfit software, which optimises lens fit based on corneal topography whilst allowing for any interpolation of data and ensuring central corneal clearance. “The lenses are worn overnight to effectively flatten and sphericise the cornea resulting in excellent vision in the daytime without the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day,” stated the company. “Research has highlighted the success of using ortho-k lenses in myopia management with children and the unique selling points of Menicon Z Night make this lens the ideal first choice in orthokeratology treatment options.” Overnight wear option for myopia treatment TOPIC LENS EXPANDS PRESCRIBING HORIZONS CooperVision has expanded its MyDay toric parameters with plus sphere powers. MyDay toric now boasts a range of +6.00DS to -10.00DS, in 10 axes, across three cylinder powers, and six axes in the highest cylinder power. MyDay toric lenses feature the same Optimised Toric Lens Geometry found in Biofinity toric, providing uniform horizontal ISO thickness, an optimised ballast band design, large toric optic zone and a smooth, continuous surface to make it an easy-to-fit, stable toric lens. CLS & IMPROVING COMFORT WITH ACTIVE INGREDIENTS DRY EYE Positive Impact has launched HydraMed eye drops to improve dry eye symptoms and contact lens comfort. HydraMed’s advanced formulation utilises the interaction between sodium hyaluronate, which restores and retains hydration, and tamarind seed polysaccharide, which helps repair the surface of the eyes. Their action is said to result in a new natural bi-polymer unique to HydraMed, displaying increased water absorption compared to the single polymers. Positive Impact is highlighting that HydraMed increases ocular comfort for the patient by reducing osmolarity, remaining longer on the corneal surface and increasing tear break-up times. The effectiveness of the new Positive results for new formulation eye drops was supported by the results of a multi-centre, practice-based study of contact lens wearers in the UK, who used HydraMed on the inside of their contact lenses during application. ITALIAN COMPANY PIONEERS NEW MARKET SEGMENT The world’s first daily contact lens for asthenopia was presented by Safilens at Opti 2018, introducing a new fourth segment to the daily wear contact lens market. Fusion 1day Vista features a design called D-Stress, based on the afocal lens design patented by Safilens and initially introduced in the presbyopia segment. The new D-Stress geometry is said to offer enhanced depth of field, reducing eye strain commonly associated with daily activities that over-stress proximal vision, like the prolonged use of digital devices. The controlled release of natural substitutes for the tear film from the Game-changing daily lens for asthenopia lens to the eye surface is said to ensure long-lasting comfort in dry environments. The lens is initially available in Germany only, with a UK launch date yet to be announced. RELIEF FOR DRY EYE PATIENTS Avizor UK is inviting eyecare practitioners to get in touch for a free trial pack of preservative-free Lacrifresh Ocu-Dry 0.30. Avizor UK country manager, Gary Daniels, said: “It is estimated that between 30 and 80 per cent of the population suffer from dry eye. We need to act now to provide relief for patients across all levels – from environmental to moderate and severe.” Lacrifresh Moisture Ocu-Dry 0.20 and Ocu-Dry 0.30 are highly regarded by eyecare professionals, says Avizor, now a preferred eyecare supplier to SightCare. The 0.30 per cent option is designed for patients who suffer from severe dry eye, providing prolonged relief from dry eye symptoms. The solution contains 30 per cent sodium hyaluronate; it is aqueous, buffered and hypotonic with a low osmolarity range of 160 to 190. The viscosity Free trials packs available range is 48-52(cP). FOCUS ON DRY EYE DIAGNOSTICS AND MANAGEMENT Visitors to Grafton Optical’s Dry Eye Centre at Optrafair this month will gain first-hand experience of its range of products for dry eye. These include new diagnostic product releases, the SBM Sistemi Ocular Surface Analyser, and the i-Pen Tear Film Osmolarity System by i-Med Pharma, as well as the E-Eye IRPL therapy device. The I-Pen Tear Film Osmolarity System is a solid state electronic diagnostic device for the quantitative measurement of the osmolarity of human tears in normal and dry eye disease patients. Designed for use as an in-practice screening device both for patients presenting with dry eye symptoms and for all pre-and post-surgical patients, the i-Pen is said to be an invaluable asset for monitoring the progress of dry eye treatment therapies. The Ocular Surface Analyser by SBM Sistemi offers a full assessment of the ocular surface through a combination of tests for dry eye diagnosis, from tear break-up time to the tear volume production test. It allows the analysis of the meibomian glands, as well as various measurements and classifications according to a number of international grading scales. Next month’s Product Spotlight willfocus on spectacle lenses and related products. The i-Pen Tear Film Osmolarity System in action Dispensing Optics APRIL 2018 19
