Mayor’s Welcome We all remember places and stories, people and things from our past – and we know how important these are to us personally and to our families, because they help us understand who we are. As a community, it is the sharing of our history that shapes our identity as a people and what it means to be a resident of the Sunshine Coast. To keep that meaning safe, we need to define our story, and what better way than with a tangible link with the past – whether it is by physical historical marker or by connecting with the local communities that know and value their history best. Through this guide, council aims to encourage the community to understand those markers, to visit those communities, to listen, to read and to feel connected with this region that we call the Sunshine Coast. While it offers only a snapshot into our history, it is a great way to immerse yourself in the region’s cultural heritage and celebrate who we are. Mayor Mark Jamieson Discovery guide 9

02 Baroon Pocket Narrows Road, Montville Baroon Pocket was the focus for one of the best known gatherings of Aboriginal people in South East Queensland. The gathering coincided with the fruiting of numerous bunya trees in the area, occurring every three years when the fruit was most prolific. People travelled to Baroon Pocket from throughout South East Queensland and northern New South Wales, using pathways that provided safe passage through the traditional countries of other groups. Nearby Mill Hill Road and Obi Obi Creek were such pathways. Baroon Pocket is in the traditional country of the Nalbo clan of the Jinibara People, determined Native Title holders, and mountain people of South East Queensland. The Jinibara People proudly displayed their connection to the forested hills of their country by using symbolic fern designs in their body paint. Discovery guide 13

These are Culturally Significant Sites to the Kabi Kabi First Nation Peoples, the recognised Traditional Owners in this Region. Please do not build or modify this area in any way, as you may disturb or damage a Culturally Significant Site. In this region, boras are called durns. Male initiates used the kippa for learning and ceremony. The fragile earthworks of bora grounds are easily damaged. Discovery guide 15

08 Moreton Central Sugar Mill Worker’s Housing and 7 Mill Street and 5 14 and 16 Bury Street, Nambour Moreton Central Sugar Mill Worker’s Housing is a group of buildings added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2008. The cottages on Mill Street are the former residences of senior staff of the Moreton Central Sugar Mill Company, and were built between 1897 and 1917. The house on Bury Street, with its extensive garden and mature trees, was formerly the residence of the mill manager and was completed in 1911. The provision of housing to workers was a practice common to a number of industries in isolated areas or new towns, and these buildings provide rare surviving evidence of the sugar industry that powered the economy of Nambour from 1897 to 2003. Please note: these historic properties are not open to the public. Discovery guide 25

The line between Nambour and Coolum was also used for passengers in the 1920s and 1930s and was instrumental in the development of tourism in the region. The cane tramway was laid directly in the centre of the roadway, and the state heritage-listed tracks can still be seen in Howard and Mill Streets today. Did you know? Dicky Beach is one of few recreational beaches in the world to be named after a shipwreck. Image: Andrew Katic. 28 Discovery guide
10 Site of the SS Dicky Wreck Beerburrum Street, Dicky Beach, Caloundra The SS Dicky was an iron-hulled steamer, driven ashore at Caloundra during heavy seas in February 1893. For 122 years the shipwreck remained on the beach that now bears its name. Decades of storms and cyclones gradually reduced the once mighty iron steamer to a remnant of its former self. A long term management strategy was developed to preserve the SS Dicky. Sunshine Coast Council removed the exposed elements of the wreck on 30 July 2015. The main portion of the keel and hull remain buried at the beach and may be uncovered in extreme tidal conditions. Interpretive works, reflecting community memories of the wreck, are planned in the adjacent park and surrounds. Discovery guide 29
