bies to learn the game without fear of losing those
brand new discs in the forest. We toured the new
course with Cori Murdock, who explained many
of the differences between the courses. While it’s
certainly a much smaller course than can be seen
as entry level, Cori tells us experienced players will
also like to have the ability to practice certain shots
in the more open and shorter course. It’s a great
option for grandparents who want to take their
grandkids, but don’t want to venture through the
more treacherous parts of the larger course. Also,
with just 9 holes, it will be easier to keep younger
children interested.

ing basket which is suspended from a large
tree, and one larger hole that has a “mando
path” meaning it’s mandatory to follow a
specific path to the hole versus just tossing
your disc directly at the basket.
When the first disc golf course was created,
there was a 5 year plan which included this
course, but with the pandemic and funding
becoming available, they decided to pro-
ceed ahead of schedule with completing the
second course. It took the team of volun-
teers many 8-10 hour Saturdays with lots
of pre-planning to get the course complete.
Cori mentions Jocelyn Township being “un-
believably supportive.” Additionally, they are
sponsored by Dare Devil Discs.
With the grand opening this Saturday, paint-
ing and signage is still being worked on and
going up. However, going forward the cost of
maintaining the course is minimal as much
of the heavy lifting is complete. The course
is free to play, any time there are not league
events, with donations accepted which would
go to the continued upkeep.

Disc Golf, she tells us, is the one sport to really
see large growth during the pandemic, other
than in the last set of restrictions in the last lock-
down that stopped outdoor activities, the course
saw lots of play and growth over the last year. As
has been the case with many things, there have
been disc shortages due to supply and demand.
The initial investment to play disc golf is much
lower than traditional golf and you can start
with just a few different discs and eventually

AlgomaTrad Summer: Blacksmithing, Basketmaking,
Wool Felting, Music Programs and The Great Picnic
Table Challenge
Algoma – AlgomaTrad will be holding a series of work-
shops and programs at the AlgomaTrad Centre on St. Jo-
seph Island. All programs and events will operate under
Re-opening and Health and Safety guidelines provided
by Algoma Public Health and Ontario Public Health,
including masking, physical distancing, and cleaning
protocols. More details and registration information
available at algomatrad.ca/2021SummerPrograms
Blacksmithing – 4-weeks learn-at-your-own-pace pro-
gram with mentor Denis Frechette, Tuesdays 6-9pm
(July 13 start) OR Thursdays 2-5pm, (July 15 start).
$100 for 4 weeks. Ages 14 and up, registration required.
Also, group booking opportunity on Saturdays starting
July 17th - groups reserve a 3-hour time-period (like a
blacksmithing birthday party for a group of adults!). 4-8
people. $25/person.
Wool Felting – with Dawn Allard. Limit 8 people per
session, materials included.
· Beginner session (Geodes and Felted Rocks), 8 years
to adult, on Monday, July 19, 1:30-4:30PM, $40/person.
· Intermediate session (Felted Coin Purse), Wednes-
day, July 21, 1:30-4:30PM; $55/person.
· Beginner to Intermediate session (Eco-printed Mini-
scarves and Felted Soap) on Friday, July 23, 10am to
4pm, $65/person. Registration includes materials. Bring
your own lunch.
Basket Making – Two, separate, full-day workshops with
Heather Pepper. 9:30AM to 4PM both days. Limit of 4
participants/class. Material included, bring your own
lunch.
· Wednesday, July 14 (beginner– Bird Feeder and
Pouch Basket), $40 per person, 8 years to adult
· Thursday, July 15 (beginner to intermediate – Mar-
ket Basket), $75/person
Ukulele and Songwriting – with facilitator Lindre-
na Newberry. Three days from Tuesday, July 20 to
Thursday, July 22. Beginner ukulele from 10:00AM to
11:00AM. Songwriting from 11:30am to 1PM. Ages 8 and
up, limit of 8 per class. FREE – funded by the Nicholas
Missere Bursary Fund, donations accepted.

Barbers 300 years ago were more occupied with
shaving rather than hair cutting. They also
did ‘minor’ surgery like tooth pulling and the
dressing of sword wounds after a street fight, or
bloodletting to improve one’s health.
It was common for a guitar or other musical
instrument to be kept in the barber shop for
the entertainment of those waiting their turn,
which of course, led to what has become known
as barbershop singing with its distinctive close
harmony.

The Island Clippings is pleased to publish personal Classified Advertising and Public Service Announcements of 50 words or less, free of charge to Island
residents, as a community service. Other than personal for sale ads the announcement must be of value to the community. We reserve the right to decide if
the ad is of service to the community.
Ads or announcements for non-residents or items or services, to be sold for profit, or generate income or events charging an entrance fee (which includes
“not for profit organizations”) as well as items valued at over $1,000. will incur a nominal charge of $10. plus HST.
We reserve the right to determine if a fee is required. We reserve the right to edit down to 50 words or less.
Ads or announcements will appear in one issue, but may be repeated, at your request (space permitting).
Advertiser must resubmit ad each week. To ensure space for everyone, please limit your content to a maximum of 50 words.
