F R O M T H E B O A R D Friends and family of the St. Francis House, It is my great honor and privilege on behalf of the Board of Directors to welcome you to the 2021 St. Francis House Dinner & Auction. We have so much to celebrate and give thanks for, and tonight we will do both. The ability to be back in-person for this event is an amazing blessing, and we sincerely hope you enjoy our hospitality. For 34 years, the St. Francis House has been a valued resource in our community for those looking for a second, and sometimes even a third or fourth chance, to get the hand up needed to make their lives better. “Moving People from Homelessness to Hope” is what we do! This next month, we will celebrate a year of occupancy in the whole, new building. We now have the ability to serve 120 guests in the new facility, in addition to the family units and other housing options. The team that worked on planning, fundraising, construction, and now working in the “House” has made a bright new reality for our guests, and for our community. I want to thank the businesses, churches, service groups, families, and individuals that have partnered with us to financially support the capital campaign and the daily mission of St. Francis House. 2020 was a tough year on everyone, but the St. Francis House came through the pandemic very well. It was not without a few bumps and bruises, but as we look back, the timing of being in the new facility, and to have the staff that we do, allowed for MUCH safer protocols and practices, helping to insure that guests and staff were protected and kept safe. I want to thank our very talented and dedicated staff for their care, diligence, and hard work through this last year especially. Each of you is important, your work is valued and appreciated, and I am thankful that you are part of making the St. Francis House a place that our guests feel safe and encouraged. I am so grateful for the leadership of our Executive Director, Julie Becker, and the many, many ways she pours herself into her work. And to the hundreds of volunteer partners that show up and give of themselves to guests and the staff, the success of our mission is in the relationships that occur each time you come to the House. Thank you to those that have volunteered time and resources; you have made many goals and dreams come true. Please hear this; we really appreciate all that you do, and we are grateful! This evening, I hope you hear and appreciate the stories of the many ways that partnering with the St. Francis House impacts the lives of guests and their families, but also the amazing ways that our community benefits as a whole. We are blessed more than average, and we give thanks to God for His faithfulness. In Christ, Pr. Jeff Backer, St. Francis House Board President 4

S P EA K ER S BOONTHAN’S STORY: ‘ They recognized my worth...’ My name is Boonthan Khanthavong. I came to the St. Francis House September of 2020. When I came to the St. Francis House, I did not have anything to my name, and couldn’t even get a simple state ID due to my green card being lost while I was in prison. After many months of working for the Shopping News bagging and delivery newspapers, I saved enough money to be able to apply for a new one. Due to the help and support of Juan, my case manager, I was finally able to finally put in for replacement green card with the help of my case manager. All my hard work, time and patience, paid off. Once the green card was approved, more opportunities were open to me for employment. I was able to obtain my state ID and my Social Security Card. Then, I was able to apply for a position at Millennium Recycling and I am glad I accepted this position. They provided a stable source of income for me and made me feel like a part of a team. They recognized my worth and they showed it to all of their employees each day. My time here at the St. Francis House was well worth the stay. I have gotten to know the staff well and they have made a positive impact on my life. The St. Francis House provided me with many necessities but the most important thing they provided was their support. I am grateful to have been a part of this program and being able to leave here a better person. What makes st. Francis House Unique? • We are transitional housing. Guests typically stay from 60 days to as much as a year. • Zero tolerance policy for drugs, alcohol and gambling. • All guests must work. There are 82 local businesses that regularly employ our people. • Guests are required to make payments on debt, child support or court-ordered restitution. • Because they pay a modest fee to stay at the house, guests learn to budget for rent. • Guests save money for a ‘starter fund’ for their own apartment. 6
