[ FROM THE EDITOR ] FESTIVE! made easy I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS ARE HANDS-DOWN, MY FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR. EVER! BLAME IT ON THE EXCITEMENT OF SUMMER PARTY PLANS, TIME SPENT WITH LOVED ONES OR THE CONCEPT OF THANKSGIVING AND ITS OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR ALL THAT YOU HAVE AND VALUE. OR SIMPLY THE SPACE WE ALLOW OURSELVES TO TAKE FROM OUR FRENETIC LIVES OF DO-ING, AND TO JUST REFLECT, SLOWLY FILLING OUR CREATIVE CUPS AND JUST BE-ING b ut while my list of “loves” at this time of year is endless, and I mostly feel a sense of goodwill, I also have a particularly low tolerance for crowds, chaos and the queues often experienced while facing festive season shopping. It would appear that I’m not alone – most of the members of my team feel exactly the same way. Moms don’t particularly look forward to the idea of trying to work through a long shopping list with tired, over-stimulated children in tow. Numerous friends feel they generally overspend on the wrong items every year, in an effort to get everyone a suitable gift, not having a clue where to go, or what to get... And don’t get us started on the catering – the EDITOR’S festive picks idea of family lunches and summer holiday meals is enough to make most weak at the knees On my wishlist this holiday? – totally because they don’t have time enough to plan the perfect (read: easy) meal, set at the Anything from, by, for or about most exquisite table, and accompanied by the perfect refreshments... My plan is to be attending. We’ve got table decor sorted, party outfits synced, and we’ve even listed the gather a list of all my best reads, and stores by number, to ensure you have the easiest and best shopping experience this season. buy a set of Vanessa’s five most-loved To top it all off, Mall of Africa’s pledge – Festive, Made Easy – means that you can expect reads for everyone – hard cover, of more Mall of Africa team members on hand to assist. The fantastic guest relations team on course, not Kindle ! the upper shopping level – who will be available during trading hours to answer and help with any questions, directions and store information or, in fact, anything that could make your shopping trip more pleasurable – will be our first port of call when we get to the Mall. And then when we finally leave, there will be no queuing to pay for parking or scrambling for the correct change as between SnapScan and the Mall of Africa app, which you’ll want to download stat, it’s all sorted. Painfree parking. But with the magical family holiday extravaganza Fantasy of Light - The Secret Castle, which runs every evening from 25 November until Christmas Eve, who will ever want to leave? While all of this entertainment and convenience is important in making shopping easier and more pleasurable, the ultimate end goal this festive season is that we all get to enjoy more time celebrating, relaxing and having fun with our loved ones. Now isn’t that what summer holidays – if not life in general – are all about? Festive is fun. Festive is safe, and festive is easy this season. From all at Mall of Africa, happy holidays! [ FASHION ] EYEWEAR TRENDS If you’re shopping for your next perfect pair of sunglasses, the international trend rules apply. According to sunglass experts at Vision Works Mall Of Africa, here’s what to look for: Geometric shapes dominate with either sharp or smoothed angles. The round shape is extremely popular again - we love the range of Gigi sunglasses from Vision Works! Designers have played with unique combinations - such as a round shape within a square shaped outer frame, making for unique looks. Metal sunglasses are still big, but there are loads of fresh new design inspirations on the classic aviator, such as great new frame materials. The double nose bridge is everywhere and there are limitless variations of this from which to choose. Loads of attention is on the zero base “flat” lenses. Colours to look for include natural green hues varying from rich, dark forest shades, to fresh apple green. Other prominent colours are grey, white, crystal and yellow gold. SUMMER LUNCHES made easy WHEN IT COMES TO LONG, LAZY HOLIDAY LUNCHES, NOTHING COULD BE SIMPLER THAN A BRAAI. HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT e FABULOUS! very sport needs a superhero, and when it comes to braaiing, the legendary South African BraaiBoy is the specialist to have on speed dial. Having braaied every day for the last seven years, Gareth Daniell (aka BraaiBoy) has braai ideas for every occasion... and to suit every taste. “Close friends will know that no matter where we are or what we’re doing, come hell or high water, there will be a braai at least once a day,” Gareth says. “Sometimes it is inconvenient, yes… For example when we were stranded on the side of the road in Zambia at 11pm, but that’s why I always carry a portable braai around with me.” Gareth’s ultimate festive season dish is a slow-roasted turkey (or chicken) on indirect heat. “A spit also works really well, but when I get together with my family over the holidays, I like to do a potjie. It allows me to socialise with everyone and enjoy their company and feed a lot of people at the same time.” What adventures will BraaiBoy be getting up to this holiday? “I’ve got several trips planned. I’ll be heading to Mozambique at the beginning of December, and then we’re off to Ballito for a huge family-day celebration just before New Year’s. Feel free to come over and say hi if you’re in the area – details will be on my social media feeds and website.” Here, we share our four favourite Braaiboy summer recipes. The ingredients are available from regular supermarkets such as (Woolworths (Shop 2027) and Checkers (Shop 1065).
