DESERT STAGES THEATRE SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA ACTOR'S CAFE PRODUCTION THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. Written by Oscar Wilde Directed by Van Rockwell
WELCOME Welcome to Desert Stages Theatre! Thank you for joining us at this performance of DST's 2022 Actor’s Cafe production of Oscar Wilde’s The Impor- tance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. Oscar Wilde was a paradox. A great and admired artist, at the same time a scorned and derided dandy. This paradox among others is examined in Earnest, Wilde's last and longest lasting play. We hope you will enjoy director Van Rockwell's "modern" take on the classic. If you wish to meet with friends or cast members after the show, please do so in the food court area of the mall, so the lobby does not become congested. Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the seemingly unending pandemic and as we do our best to keep you, our actors, and our staff healthy and safe. Thank you for your support of live theatre experiences and for your atten- dance at this performance. Whether you are seeing your 100th show or your first at DST, you are a valued member of the Desert Stages Theatre community, and we appreciate you more than you could ever know! Enjoy this entertaining performance! Ellen Versen Walt Versen Executive Director Artistic Director
DIRECTOR'S LETTER This is not your grandma’s Importance of Being Earnest or Oscar Wilde. The main goal Wilde had for Earnest was to criticize the society he lived in, em- bodying the upper class during the Victorian 1800’s. He used humor to ensure his upper-class audience were entertained but could laugh at themselves and bring to light how not everything in his society was the way it should have been. So, why is Earnest relevant to me or modern society? Well, our society now does not behave exactly how it did during the Victorian era. As much as we like to tell ourselves that as a society we have progressed and ‘classes’ are not a catego- rization anymore, plenty of people remain who have more money and perceive themselves to be better. Wealthier people have extensive networks and become social climbers, making it easier for family members and friends to become more successful. How does this relate to Earnest? Well, Oscar Wilde was able to address social is- sues. Maybe we should not be reflecting the relevance of Earnest from the point of what it was attempting to say, but more by looking at how it was attempting to say it. Wilde’s use of humor to focus on something unjust in the world he lived in allowed for social matters to be viewed completely differently. And where do we continue to see satire referring to societal happenings? Take Saturday Night Live’s renditions of every US presidential election since it aired. They didn’t spark a whole societal class to reflect on its values and behaviors, but it was an effec- tive way to spark the interest of people, allowing them to view something from a different perspective. The play opened in 1895 and every version of Earnest I have seen in the valley has kept it safe, by keeping it in London, England, in 1895 as Wilde had written it. I never understood why. We have come such a long way in society and culture, so why do we always retire to the conventional storytelling for such regarded plays? Why not have some fun with Earnest now and go against the societal norm? Only changing certain words and phrases for a modern-day backdrop, we kept Wilde’s original dialogue and concentrated on making the story and pivotal messages relevant for today’s cultural landscape. Earnest was a powerful device in sparking a change in society during Wilde’s days which are relevant today in societies continuing to struggle with wealth and sta- tus divides. Despite bringing to light a particular issue, Wilde allowed for a new way to communicate a message with a large audience. And hopefully, Wilde’s message will remain ubiquitous overall and reflect ours just the same. Van Rockwell Director
