WELCOME TO STILLWATER SCHOOL FOR MOSQUITOS 2021/22 Welcome to a special preview of STILLWATER SCHOOL FOR MOSQUITOS! The pandemic has given The Musical Stage Company the gift of our first ever summer W E L C O M E T O S T I L LWAT E R S C H O O L F O R M O S Q U I T O S program. As such, we wanted to share something with younger audiences who would normally be in school or in bed during our season in order to inspire the same sense of excitement and creativity that our adult audiences experience when encountering a new musical in development. What a pleasure to host Peter Fernandes, Hailey Gillis, Qasim Khan, Courtney Ch’ng Lancaster, and Jennifer Villaverde – all of whom have a history with The Musical Stage Company in different artistic capacities – to preview their imaginative and whimsical new musical in development, inspired by The Mosquito Brothers by Griffin Ondaatje. As a musical that is very much in the middle of being developed, this morning’s performance is not only an entertaining concert unto itself, but also a chance to learn how artists make work – what kinds of ideas are they playing with, what is their process and where do they go from here? More importantly, it’s a chance for you – our audience – to play an integral role in the development of this delightful family show by peeking behind the curtain and offering this creative team the chance to test out their material. Thank you for being here today. And welcome back to live theatre! MI TCHEL L M A R CU S (HE /HIM) T HE R O GE R & K E V IN G A R L A ND CH IEF E XECU T I V E OF F ICER , THE MUSICA L S TAGE C OM PA N Y 3
WELCOME FROM THE MULLIGANS Thank you for joining us today. It’s nice to be performing in front of people again! We’re trying to make something. A play. A musical? A play with music! Have you ever made a thing? Maybe with some friends, you got together and made...a fashion show. Or W E L C O M E T O S T I L LWAT E R S C H O O L F O R M O S Q U I T O S recorded a movie. Or built a fort. Or made a play! It’s pretty beautiful, working together with other people to create. Everyone contributes, and we learn ways of communicating, and being generous listeners, and offering up good and bad ideas and also criticisms in useful ways. There are lots of friends working together on this particular play - writers like Griffin Ondaatje and theatre makers (that’s us, Jenn, Hailey and Qasim, along with our collaborators Peter and Courtney) and all our supporters, like Musical Stage Company, Young People’s Theatre, The Wuchien Michael Than Fund, and the Ontario Arts Council. We’re pretty excited to share the thing we’re making with you. It’s a work-in-progress, meaning we haven’t finished it yet, and we’re learning more about it by trying it out with you. So really, you’re making this with us, too. Thank you. T HE MUL L IGA N S P E T ER F ERN A ND E S, H A IL E Y GIL L IS, QASIM K H A N, C OUR T NE Y CH ’ NG L A NCAS T ER & JENNIF ER V IL L AV ERD E L A N D AC K N O W L E D G M E N T As you watch STILLWATER SCHOOL FOR MOSQUITOS and reflect on your own memories of experiencing reconnection and finding hope within Tkaronto, please consider its original caretakers both recorded and unrecorded who have been telling stories and connected to this land for generations. STILLWATER SCHOOL FOR MOSQUITOS is being performed in the “Dish With One Spoon Territory.” The Dish With One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe Nation, Mississaugas of the Credit, and Haudenosaunee Confederacy that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, colonial settlers, and all newcomers, have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship, and respect. May this show, performed on this land, remind us of our responsibility to repair the history of injustice and damage that has been done, and continues to be inflicted upon Turtle Island (colonially Canada)’s Indigenous peoples, by its settlers. For more information on how you can be a part of building a more equitable future for Turtle Island’s Indigenous peoples, visit The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada by clicking here. 4
