WELCOME Welcome to Desert Stages Theatre! Thank you for joining us at this performance of DST's 2022 Mainstage production of GUYS AND DOLLS! Desert Stages Theatre is thrilled to open our 28th season with this iconic Broadway favorite! We continue to be amazed at the level of tal- ent in the Valley, as new "triple threat" actors come through our doors at every audition. Thank you to Gary Crumm, Cathy Hauan, and Mar- ley DeGroodt for taking full advantage of this talent in such a fun and familiar show. Thank you to the performers and the rest of the creative team for spending the past eight weeks with DST and for bringing us the delightful musical rom-com that is GUYS AND DOLLS! If you wish to meet with your friends or cast members after the show, please do so in the food court area of the mall, so the lobby does not become congested. Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the seemingly unending pandemic and as we do our best to keep you, our actors, our staff healthy and safe. Thank you for your support of live theatre experiences and for your attendance at this performance. Whether you are seeing your 100th show or your first at DST, you are a valued member of the Desert Stag- es Theatre community, and we appreciate you more than you could ever know! Now, in the words of Big Jule, "Give me the dice. And give me room!" Ellen Versen Walt Versen Executive Director Artistic Director
DIRECTOR'S LETTER "If I have all the tears that are shed on Broadway by guys in love, I will have enough salt water to start an opposition ocean to the Atlantic and Pacific, with enough left over to run the Great Salt Lake out of business.” - Damon Runyon When Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway in 1950, most audience mem- bers would probably have recognized the character archetypes they saw on stage. They were the denizens of the world of Damon Runyon, the New York storyteller who told made-up stories of slang-talking gangsters, cops, mis- sionaries, newspapermen, and burlesque dancers. Runyon’s New York— was a time in New York when Burlesque was at its height (mostly due to the low ticket price and because it became a way that women could make a living), street gambling was a way of life (albeit a crimi- nal one), and Christian missionaries were trying to save the souls of sinners (with minimal success). All of these different types were crashing up against each other in the cramped quarters of the side streets just off Broadway. Amidst this tension, Runyon saw the possibility for an unexpected love to blossom. I am very excited to be directing this season’s opening production. The Tony- winning musical Guys and Dolls. The musical premiered on Broadway on November 24, 1950. It won multiple Tony awards. Opening in July of 1976, I remember watching clips and highlights of my personal favorite revival di- rected by Abe Burrows, which featured Motown-style musical arrangements. The Incredibly talented all-black cast burst from the stage oozing with talent and bursting with energy demonstrating a new vision for the show, again nominated for multiple Tony Awards. The 1992 Broadway revival was the most successful remounting of the show since the original broadway run. Thirty years later, brings us to this moment, this multitalented cast, this fabu- lous production crew. We celebrate Guys and Dolls legacy with you, our devoted Desert Stages patrons, here in Cullity Hall. This show is brought to you by some of the most talented performers I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Just try and stop yourself from singing or humming along to some of the greatest musical theatre songs of all time. Grab a drink, heck grab some cheesecake or strudel. As the overture dims hold your Guy clutch your favorite Doll, sit down and rock back your seat, and enjoy “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York". Gary Crumm Director

WHO'S WHO IN THE CREW GARY CRUMM Director Gary is a vagabond performer, director, theatre teacher, and coach all of which would not be pos- sible without the love and support of Rachel my wife. Ever since my first-grade school play where I played a spoiled rotten prince who stole Santa Claus for his very own, I have been smitten with the stage. This is my third Desert Stages mainstage production that I am delighted to be directing here at Desert Stages. I am truly humbled to be working on this production of Guys and Dolls with my esteemed production partners. I could not have made it through without their tal- ented collaboration. Cathy Hauan, of course, is every director's dream partner. She is not only an extremely organized and talented musical pro- fessional but a creative beast, who makes me laugh, and helps inspire the best in all of us. Marley, what can you say about a true cabaret performer who unleashes her talents on an unwitting cast and then whips them into shape with show stopping choreography every Tuesday and Wednesday. Our in-house production team of Ally Baumlin (production manager) and Grace Darling (Stage Manager) keep me in line and make the impossible happen every day. These two are the unsung heroes of our production. Brady what..... he is a lighting magician! In two days brings to "light" our show and makes it shine brighter than I imagined. (Ok a little too bright back off that spot please...). Lauren and her tireless commitment to finding every last ostrich feather in Arizona among other treasures for our cast to play with. Thank you Dina for pulling our playbill together, you make us all look so good. To Linda and Michael, our box office staff, thank you for keeping us in line and managing all that ticketing stuff so we don't have to. And don't these costumes just delight your senses on their own? Mickey, you are a master creator. Your talent and drive from day one are truly amazing. (Can I still claim that promise to hem my PJ's?) This has been a surprising and absolutely crazy ride with some of the best performers in the valley, who tirelessly work and take notes, and take notes and take notes. But then to my surprise, they actually implement them and bring these characters to life with heart and soul and grit and shine. I have loved every moment with this family. Ellen and Walt, thank you is not enough, for the creative freedom and unrelenting support. You encouraged me from day one to go for broke, (did I leave any dollars left in the budget? if so I still have receipts... ) Thank you for allowing all of us to "play in your sandbox", and to you our wonderful patrons I cherish you and your support of the live performing arts throughout the valley. I am truly blessed ... till we all meet again, I will see you at the theatre.
