The Elusive Ingredient Norma Hochman If someone were to ask what my all-time favorite to enjoying these special treats that for some reason holiday was, hands down it’s Thanksgiving! always taste better when we’re together. This year put us all in such turmoil I wondered what This year when searching for the main ingredient would become of this special celebration. SPOTLIGHT ON A NEW NEIGHBOR Submitted by Joan Dale Sandie (“with an i e,” as she first introduced herself to me) Campanell is a very friendly, bubbly new neighbor who bought her lovely house on Pier Point in 2019. She moved here full-time in June of this year after her retirement as a pastor for 12 years at West Belmar United Methodist Church. Sandie received her master’s degree from Palmer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. Sandie was attracted to this area because she loves being near the ocean, and her Sunrise Bay home reminds her of the house she built in Glendora, NJ. Sandie has two children, a son and a daughter. Her daughter has a vacation home in Mystic Island which helped with the transition here. Sandie has five grandchildren ranging in age from 7 to 12. Sandie enjoys walking with her two small dogs. She also likes to read, garden, ride her bicycle, and meditate. I happen to know that she is crazy for cupcakes, too. Sandie joined the Sunrise Bay Activities Committee (when it was still meeting) and, just recently, the newly-formed Pet Committee. Sandie would love to have a block party on Pier Point next summer at the cul-de-sac. She’s already got the music covered, courtesy of the American Legion bands, which she can hear pretty loudly from her backyard each summer weekend and enjoys. Christmas and Chanukah Memories at the Sunrise Bay Clubhouse Submitted by Mary Salisbury This photo is from a previous year at the clubhouse during the holiday. From the very first holiday season in 2001 the clubhouse has been decorated by the homeowners. It was a yearly ritual - the men would bring down the boxes from the attic while the women would sort through the boxes. Then everyone would help put the tree together, checking to make sure the branches were put on correctly and were straight. Then the real fun began...decorating the tree! You know everyone likes to do it “the right way” or “their own way.” However, in the end the tree always looks fantastic. There was also a huge wreath for the fireplace and garland for the mantle that the HOA purchased in 2002. Every year these items are taken out and, when the season is over, they are carefully put back. Maybe this is why we have had them for such a long time? Of course, we cannot forget the Menorah which is set up very near to the Christmas tree. A special “thank you” goes to Jay and Marilyn for tending to the menorah lights during the holy season. Whatever you and your family are doing this year make it a safe and happy time. GUESS WHO? Just a small hint……Bobbie Jo ????????????? 8 December 2020 The Breeze
Halloween-Photo by Barbara Jo Rasberger Getting ready for the Holidays-Photo- Barbara Jo Rasberger Gratitude Submitted by Margaret Carney As we approach this Thanksgiving, it appears it will be yet another challenging year. I would like to express how appreciative I am of my neighbors here at Sunrise Bay. Just this past week, my recently rescued dog Maddie from Texas, bolted from the front door before I could get her leashed. If you know anything about Jack Russell’s, they have enormous amount of energy! We walk a few miles each day. Hans Smith was cruising the hood. Rosemary Davis on Pier Point called me after spotting her. Susan Dorazio was tracking her. Bill Galway also assisted in the hunt. Bob Olmeda was the hero finally getting her in my home and she doesn’t like men! If I omitted anyone, I apologize. Thanks for all that expressed concern. I’ve ordered a quarter board which will be mounted over my garage door. It will read GRATITUDE, which speaks volumes for what we all need to practice. The Breeze December 2020 9
A BLAST FROM THE PAST Sunrise Bay Country Line Dancers Submitted by Mary Salisbury In the early years of Sunrise Bay there was no limit to what new activity would emerge. As I remember, Jean Howard had been line dancing in Florida before she moved to Sunrise Bay and had all the music discs. And this is how Country Line Dancing started. We would learn a routine (almost) perfectly before going on to the next. Lots of fun…especially when the directions were to turn right and usually someone would turn left. That would start us all laughing and back to the beginning of our song and routine. This is how we learned – practice, practice, practice. Over sometime a “star pupil” emerged from the group and Carol Ischen became Jean’s assistant. Over the years Jean retired from teaching us line dancing and we would see her only once in a while. At this point Carol became our leader. Line dancing continued to be very popular over the years and two (2) more sessions were added on Monday and Friday at 9:30am. That is the history of our line dancing group. The photo attached with this article was taken in 2006. We had heard that Doolan’s Shore Club, located in Spring Lake, NJ, would be hosting a Country Line Dance afternoon which would include line dancing, lunch and a 1-hour open bar. (Now you know why everyone in the photo look so happy). It was a great afternoon and a great memory. I know that all the line dancers reading this now are thinking “when can we line dance again?” Hopefully very soon. Those featured in the photograph are (left to right standing): Mary Ann, Jo Bulzomi, Carol Ischen, Norma Mooney, Jean Howard (left to right, seated) Mary Salisbury, Jane Pitt, Cookie Olmeda, Rae Manfredo. 10 December 2020 The Breeze
Christmas Shopping Submitted by Anna Hickman I love Christmas time! I think of the true meaning as I set up the Stable with the figurines. I decorate my tree (with help) and love to sit in the darkened room gazing at the lights. I am sad when it’s time to dismantle. You know what I don’t like -SHOPPING. I never enjoyed roaming around a big department store with the music blasting and me with my shopping list in my hand and no purchases made. I know what I want and am never indecisive about purchases for myself. Buying for my four daughters was daunting. Previously I thought I had made good selections for them. However, I discovered some lovely dresses I had bought for them, hanging in the closets with the tags still attached. It was a sad awakening to learn that my choices were not the current style. The girls were 8 to 12 years old and they wore uniforms to school so they needed a dress or two, tops and slacks or jeans (as I came to find out). That night at the dinner table I proposed a new method for shopping. I suggested that I take them one at time to the Mall or shops of their choosing. Since I worked full time, it would be an early Saturday morning or a Sunday early afternoon. They could select what they wanted, try them on, if necessary and add to the pile. When they were finished, I would say “go take a walk around the area”. I would go over their choices, taking out some things I thought were duplicates and keeping the total price in mind. Sometimes we would have to go to another store. Then we would go out to lunch and enjoy a great conversation just the two of us. It was a rewarding day and we still talk about those Christmas shopping trips. On Christmas morning as they unwrapped their presents, I would hear an excited voice say “Oh I forgot all about this, I am so happy.” Mom was happy too! We did this for many years. WHAT DO THE HOLIDAYS MEAN? Submitted by Rick Johnson Holidays are a time to gather with family and friends. This year may be a bit different than we are all used to due to Covid-19. With this in mind, we will still try to carry on our traditions and improvise on the get togethers. Some of us will Zoom or Skype, while others will have smaller intimate gatherings. We can all still decorate our homes inside and out to show our joy of the season. A tradition we have at our home is that we leave our Christmas tree up year- round. My wife takes a lot of time decorating our tree. Every ornament must be perfectly placed, our kids have their place on the tree, we have our place and our dogs have theirs. Through the years we have given our children their own ornaments so they can put them on their trees. We have now replaced them with ornaments for our grandchildren. Many nights I will go into my den and put on the Christmas tree lights and sit and reflect on how blessed I am for the many good things in my life! If you know of any of our SRB Families who may be alone during the Holiday Season, please check in on them or better yet, invite them over if they feel safe doing so or provide them with a wonderful Holiday Dinner or even just a small gift to show they are thought of. Our home is always open so please feel free to join us to enjoy some Holiday Cheer! Always be safe and healthy! My wife Kathy and I along with the SRB Board, would like to wish all our SRB Family’s Happy Holidays!!! The Breeze December 2020 13

Little Egg Harbor Township Committee Meeting– November 12, 2020 Submitted by Jerry Maquire This was a virtual meeting conducted online on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 7:00 PM. Three ordinances were adopted. A bond ordinance provides funding for roadway drainage improvements. A township code chapter revision addresses violations and deterioration of foreclosed mortgaged property. It includes registration and property inspection and holds creditors accountable for property maintenance and security. A 25 miles per hour speed limit and a no passing zone were created for the entire length of Frog Pond Road. Three proposed ordinances amending the Township Code were introduced. A new code article provides standards for keeping or raising fowl in residential areas. Another no longer authorizes payment to employees who waive health benefit coverage, while another amends the alcoholic beverage code provisions relating to underage consumption on private property, to conform to state law changes. Fourteen resolutions were passed. The Committee acknowledged review of the internal audit. Procedures were established for public participation at remoted public meetings. Fund transfers and budget amendments to include new revenue items were approved. Contracts were awarded for electric vehicle charging stations at the municipal complex and for community center fence replacement. Several personnel matters were addressed. These included “use or lose” vacation carryover; accumulated time in a separation agreement; and a collective bargaining agreement with the PBA awarded through arbitration. Tax refunds, as well as bill payments, were authorized. A request for a sewer connection waiver generated much discussion. The matter was postponed to the next meeting to allow the requesters attorney 30 days to gather additional information. The township engineer reported tree clearing has begun for a 23-lot subdivision on Railroad Avenue. He also reported on FEMA efforts to update flood plain maps. During township committee comments it was noted that planning was being done to move along dredging projects. Residents were urged to reach out to those coping with the stress of COVID-19 and all were urged to continue wearing masks. Veterans were thanked for their service, and all were wished a Happy Thanksgiving. The above is a brief summary of meeting highlights. For more complete information about this meeting see the article that appears in the Leader newspaper or contact the Committee secretary for a transcript of the proceedings. Meeting minutes are also available on the Township website. The Breeze December 2020 17
