Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 DECEMBER newsletter Freesat 306 2019 Virgin 445 Dear Renown Club Members & Supporters of TPTV, What a year it’s been! We have grown to be the largest independent TV channel in the UK in just short of five years of broadcasting – quite an accomplishment for a channel run by just three people! We’ve rescued and revived many lost films and been lucky enough to have archives opened for us to license from. We have released 12 DVD titles as well as our first music CD and created two amazing annual events celebrating TV and film history, with hosts of stars happy to appear and share their memories with us. However, our work is not yet done. Next year we hope to encourage more of the major studios to license British films and series to us, the rights of which are owned in the USA, as well as persuading more libraries to allow us to release unseen titles on DVD. Long live Talking Pictures TV! We could not have achieved any of this without your support and we are happy to welcome more viewers and club members, so wear your Film Club badges with pride and spread the word; write to your local papers, ring your favourite radio stations and tell them about the revival of the golden era of film and TV. Ask everyone to tune their TVs into Freeview 81, Sky 328, Freesat 306 and Virgin 445. This year we have our best Christmas schedule of entertainment yet and we are very proud to announce that we will be bringing Lionel Jeffries’ wonderful British film The Amazing Mr Blunden to TV screens on Christmas Day at 7pm and New Year’s Day at 3:25pm, along with a marvellous medley of films and series for you to enjoy over the festive period. Our handy Christmas TV guide with all the details is on pages 24 and 25. It’s been wonderful to see such an enthusiastic reaction to the return of Catweazle to our TV screens. A whole generation of new fans are being introduced to Geoffrey Bayldon, the incredible actor who played the part of the wizard. He didn’t just act, he WAS Catweazle. Our new ‘elec-trickery’ sweatshirt inspired by Catweazle is on page 20. It makes a lovely gift and is ideal for keeping warm this winter, so call us on the ‘telling bone’ if you would like to order one! We are delighted to see that we are now in The Telegraph TV listings, as well as the Radio Times, TV Times and many others. If we are not listed in your favourite magazine or newspaper, do write to them – only you can make the difference. It’s been a joy to speak to so many of you about The Imperial War Museums season and there will be more war films from their archive to see during December. Many of you have asked if these are available on DVD; we have found a small selection which can be seen on pages 2, 3 and 4. We will soon be announcing some of the guests appearing at our festival of film in St Albans on March 22nd. We are down to the last 100 tickets now, so do make sure you purchase yours soon if you are planning to join us. If you don’t know what to give as a thank you for Christmas dinner, our Scrooge apron and DVD make perfect festive gifts – (see page 21). I always wear my Scrooge pinny when I’m stuffing the turkey! All that remains is for us to thank you all for your support – without you we simply wouldn’t be here. I hope you all enjoy some proper Christmas telly on the channel over the coming month! What’s Ebeneezer Scrooge’s favourite Christmas game? Wishing you all the best for the New Year – Mean-opoly! and a very Merry Christmas! Sarah, Noel & Neill 1

Jack Wild Audio Book It’s a Dodger’s Life An Autobiography Contains 16 CDs £29.99 WITH FREE UK POSTAGE! Read by Richard Burnip Unabridged Contains 16 Audio CDs Includes a bonus extract of Jack reading an early draft of the book. Propelled to stardom at the age of 15, this is the story of actor Jack Wild – published for the first time. Just an ordinary boy, spotted by chance by a theatrical agent, Jack found world fame through his performance in the 1968 film musical Oliver! which brought him an Oscar nomination and international stardom. As his fame grew, Jack sadly fell prey to alcoholism, which eventually dominated his life. After the glittering highs of the 60’s and 70’s came the “lost decade” of the 80’s; falling victim to debt and being sectioned under the Mental Health Act. The real story is here, in Jack’s own words, but this isn’t a memoir of pity and darkness, finally sober, Jack returned to the screen in the 90’s. Even after the cancer diagnosis which killed him at the age of 53, he was optimistic about life. His autobiography contains behind the scenes accounts of the many great names he worked with, from British favourites such as Diana Dors and Ron Moody to international celebrities including Bing Crosby and Kevin Costner. Completed by Jack’s widow, Claire, who also reads the epilogue, this audio book is written in Jack’s unique voice, with honesty, roguish charm and an astonishing lack of self-pity. Memories of working at The Rank Organisation Part 4, by Noel Cronin So here I am in the heart of London’s Soho at De Lane Lea, a sound company that dubbed foreign films into English and sound mixed TV commercials. There were two sound studios, A in Moor Street and B in Greek Street. I worked in a cutting room at the top of a building looking right down Old Compton Street. Cinerama was just beginning with 2001 A Space Odyssey and right at the bottom of my building was a Wimpy Bar! The De Lane Lea process for dubbing foreign films into English was a long one that basically involved a translation of the dialogue and then a fitting of the translation with words being changed to fit the actors mouth movement once this was completed. The film was cut into loops, picture and virgin sound for recording with the selected actors. Part of the process required the actor’s lines to be written on clear film with pen and ink to match the picture loops; this ran in sync at the bottom of the screen which the actors read. The loop could go around as much as needed until the director was happy with the re-recording. Well, my hand writing was very clear and the actors loved it, so for once I was fireproof as no one could write so well! I remember after a long and difficult recording session the recorded sound loops were left in the projection box in storage boxes. I arrived the next day to collect them to start the post production work only to find the boxes had disappeared! After much searching it was discovered that a cleaner, thinking it was rubbish, had thrown them away! All the actors had to be recalled and a long and expensive session had to be carried out again. Sound did interest me, but writing film bands didn’t – in fairness, De Lane did want me to stay, but I was offered a post at the COI, (the Central Office of Information), which was about the bottom of the heap in film terms, but for me it turned out to be the saviour of my film career! Producer Noel Cronin founded Talking Pictures TV and Renown Pictures. Noel is currently contributing a series of memories to the newsletter. Ever since his entrance into the world of film as a young man, Noel has been interested in preserving the heritage of lost and forgotten films, shorts and programmes, and for many years has been gathering, restoring and preserving this wonderful heritage which would otherwise be lost. Noel worked for The Rank Organisation and the Central Office of Information, and bought the rights to several libraries that owned films which now air on TPTV. His career as a producer and editor of films, documentaries and TV series spans several decades. 7

BOOK OFFERS – RECOMMENDED READ FOR THIS MONTH Don’t Ask Me! The enigma of why SHEILA STEAFEL is attracted to BASTARDS... We were very sad to hear of the recent passing of the inimitable Sheila Steafel. Sheila had been working on an updated version of her book Bastards which she had given a longer title, explaining what this humorous and engaging book is all about. “When I read through the final draft of my autobiography, I decided to take out several anecdotes about my personal life, simply because they seemed a sort of indulgence, and didn’t add to what I wanted to say about my life and my career. They were hiccups along the way with some attacks worse than others, but all were finally ‘got rid’. I put them in a file which I called BASTARDS for my own amusement, and PAPERBACK BOOK thought no more about them until my book came out and I was asked what my next writing project would be. For want of anything else to say I replied ‘BASTARDS’, and the response was so positive that what had started as a whim began to take on substance. The bastards were all my own. Some were short, as are some of the tales, and some tall, which, in spite of your incredulity, none of the tales are. Well, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I couldn’t make them up! Could I?” Don’t Ask Me! The Enigma of Why Sheila Steafel is Attracted to Bastards is a tribute to a lady who brought so much laughter and enjoyment into millions of lives. Spotlight on ALASTAIR SIM Born: 9 October 1900 Died: 19 August 1976 Alastair George Bell Sim was born on 9th October 1900 in Edinburgh. His father was a successful tailor and also served as a Justice of the Peace. His mother moved from the Island of Eigg in the Hebrides to Edinburgh as a teenager. Sim was educated at James Gillespie High School and George Heriot School before attending the University of Edinburgh in 1912, where he remained until he was called up for military training. After the war Sim decided not to continue his studies but to pursue an acting career instead. He left the family home and spent a year in the Scottish Highlands. After winning the gold medal for speaking verse at the Edinburgh Music Festival he accepted a succession of University roles teaching elocution and he also ran a drama school. One of his pupils was Naomi Merlith Plaskitt, who would later become his wife. Sim’s first professional role was in Othello at the Savoy in London in 1930. Musical revue followed and then his Broadway debut. Back in London he appeared in a variety of roles and in 1948 he was elected rector of Edinburgh University. He held the post until 1951, when he was made an honorary Doctor of Law. By the mid-forties Sim was a big box office draw and his film career went from one success to another. Some of his finest performances include Green for Danger (1947), The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950), Scrooge (1951) Laughter in Paradise (1951), Folly to be Wise (1952), An Inspector Calls (1954), The Belles of St Trinian’s (1954), Left, Right & Centre (1959) and School for Scoundrels (1960). His best remembered role is that of Scrooge in the 1951 adaptation, considered to be the most definitive. Twenty years later he returned to the role once more for the animated version. During the mid-sixties Sim made a successful return to the theatre, with occasional TV and film work, adding his own touch of brilliance to whatever role he undertook. Throughout his life Alistair Sim guarded his privacy and his family with care. He preferred that people judge him by his performances and refused to give autographs as he believed audience interest in him should be purely down to his work, also shunning interviews and publicity whenever possible. In a rare interview with Focus on Film magazine he said, “No amount of publicity can dampen a good performance or gloss over a bad one.” Both he and his wife were keen to pro- mote and encourage young acting talent. Among their protégés was George Cole, who lived with them on and off from 1940, when he was 15 years old, until 1952, when he married and bought a house nearby. He also appeared in nine of Sims’ films. Sim was awarded a CBE in the Coronation Honours List of 1953. He was also offered a knighthood but turned it down because it would have impinged too much on his private life. His last stage appearance was a return to the role of Lord Ogleby in a new production of The Clandestine Marriage at the Savoy in April 1975. The man who appeared in 61 films and 46 West End productions died on 19 August 1976, aged 75 at St Pancras Hospital in London. His widow lived until 1999. 17
