Foyer Folk: Dampier’s Round Sat 14 Sep, 8.00pm Well known as a barn dance band locally this duo entertain with a mixture of tunes from various parts of the British Isles. Moira sings and plays fiddle and harp while Peter plays guitar, flute, and whistles. £5 Foyer Folk: Chris Elliot & Caitlin Jones Sat 12 Oct, 8.00pm This Staffordshire based duo play music inspired by the English folk tradition. Driving guitar and bouzouki accompany haunting whistles and harmonium along with intricate vocal harmonies. Chris and Caitlin perform a mix of traditional and original ballads about place and identity. £5 Along the Avon Thu 24 Oct, 8.00pm An evening of poems, songs and stories inspired by the River Avon presented by local writers Sue Johnson and Bob Woodroofe and singer-songwriter Colin Pitts. Admission free. Foyer Folk: The Night Watch Sat 2 Nov, 8.00pm The Night Watch play songs and dance tunes from the 12th century to the end of the 17th century, covering the mediaeval, renaissance and early baroque periods. The duo sing in mediaeval, Tudor and modern English, and play period instruments including shawm, recorders, cornamuse, rebec, oud, gittern, cittern, and renaissance guitars. £5 Foyer Folk: Sally Ironmonger & Brian Carter Sat 14 Dec, 8.00pm Sally and Brian have been writing and performing together for nearly twenty years. There are a wide variety of events including a Mamma Mia Sing A Long with PODS, concerts from Simon Goodall & the Bourne Again Shadows, Treorchy Male Choir, The WestEnders and The Budapest Café Orchestra plus the opportunity to enjoy An Evening with Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. Via satellite this season we have a literary event with Margaret Atwood, world class operas and ballets, acclaimed productions from National Theatre Live, the pizzazz of 42nd Street - The Musical, and a stand up gig from Billy Connolly. EVENTS www.number8.org Margaret Atwood: Live in Cinemas Live from the National Theatre, London On 10th September, the wait is over… The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live broadcast, as Fane Productions present an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor. The publication of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy Award-winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights. Atwood will be in conversation with broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed about her remarkable career and diverse range of works. With exclusive readings from the new book by special guests, this will be an unmissable event with Atwood, spotlighting her signature insight, humour and intellect. Lyrics will be provided on the screen so you can join in, you can even dress up if you like - white satin flares are welcome but not mandatory! It promises to be an uplifting evening where you can soak up the atmosphere and join in the fun! Down on his luck and permanently hungry, Francis Henshall (Corden) becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis takes a second job with Stanley, who is in hiding from the police. EVENTS www.number8.org The Royal British Legion presents Rock for Heroes The incredible Rock for Heroes are back on the road for 2019 with a show celebrating your favourite rock and pop artists. With music from artists such as Queen, David Bowie, Van Halen, Toto, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Dire Straits and many more. Performed by a full live rock band and superb singers this really is a night out unlike any other. You won’t see a bad wig here, this isn’t a tribute act, but is simply paying tribute to the legends in music. Escape the 9 to 5 and join Rock for Heroes for music, laughter and a rockin’ night out! The new Royal Opera Season begins with Mozart’s engaging masterpiece, which follows Don Giovanni, the women he serially seduces, and the vengeance that finally catches up with him. The opera is renowned for its ever-shifting portrayals of complex characters, fast-moving action and mix of the comic and the heartfelt. A cast of international singers - both familiar and making Royal Opera debuts - under conductor Hartmut Haenchen perform the glorious arias and ensembles of this opera favourite. Returning to Number 8, following their sell-out show in 2017, they want to share their passion and love of the West End and Broadway with you. The company are all past members from the London production of Les Misérables and between them have over 25 top West End shows to their credits. Over the last decade they have established themselves as one of the country’s leading musical theatre groups. Hear all of your favourites from iconic shows - Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, The Lion King, Chicago, Blood Brothers, Hamilton and of course the world’s most popular musical … Les Misérables. As their dispute grows, the magical royal couple meddle with mortal lives leading to love triangles, mistaken identities and transformations … with hilarious, but dark consequences. Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedy will be captured live at the Bridge Theatre in London. Gwendoline Christie, Oliver Chris, David Moorst and Hammed Animashaun lead the cast as Titania, Oberon, Puck and Bottom. Leonardo’s paintings and drawings will be the focus as Exhibition on Screen presents every single attributed painting, in high quality on the big screen. Key works include The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, Lady with an Ermine, Ginevra de’ Benci, Madonna Litta, Virgin of the Rocks, and more than a dozen others. EVENTS www.number8.org Treorchy Male Choir Returning to Number 8 by popular demand the Treorchy Male Choir is all set to share their love of music in a concert filled with their magnificent voices raised in song. Internationally renowned, the choir has enchanted audiences around the world for more than 130 years. From their Royal Command Performance for Queen Victoria to their appearance at the Royal Variety Show more than a century later, they continue to play to packed houses. With more than ninety albums to their name, Treorchy enjoys an unbeaten competition record and has performed with the likes of Tom Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie Andrews, Burt Bacharach and Shirley Bassey. 01386 555488 EVENTS An Evening with Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards Great Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper, Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. With the UK firmly backing the plasterer from Gloucestershire, Eddie took to the slopes followed by a whirlwind of international press but unfortunately came last in both his events. Although he did not win an Olympic medal, his determination and ‘have a go’ attitude won a place in the hearts of spectators around the globe, and went on to inspire the Eddie the Eagle feature film. A true example of a heroic failure, Eddie’s achievements and perseverance continue to be an inspiration to all on how to succeed against all the odds. Join Eddie, here at Number 8 in person, to learn how this particular Eagle landed on his feet in the end, even if it wasn’t in quite the same style as his sporting rivals. Friday 15 November - 7.30pm Tickets: £16, 16 & under £10 1hr 50mins (inc interval) The Budapest Café Orchestra Following their rapturously received performance here in 2017 this quartet of revered musicians returns with another evening of impassioned Eastern European gypsy folk, heart-rending ballads and fiery dances. Led by jazz violin superstar Christian Garrick, The Budapest Cafe Orchestra play traditional folk and gypsy flavoured music from across the Balkans and Russia. Klezmer, Romanian doinas, Hungarian czardas and beautiful ballads - such as the theme to Schindler's List and Andy Statman's beautiful Flatbush Waltz - are all featured. EVENTS www.number8.org Wise Children Recorded at the York Theatre Royal Award-winning director Emma Rice brings her unique, exuberantly impish vision to Angela Carter’s novel in this theatre production. A big, bawdy tangle of joy and heartbreak, Wise Children is a celebration of show business, family, forgiveness and hope, with a generous dash of Shakespeare, scandal and mischief, taking the audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotion. In Brixton, twin chorus girls Nora and Dora Chance are celebrating their 75th birthday. Melchior their father turns 100 on the same day. As does his twin brother Peregrine. If, in fact, he’s still alive. And if, in truth, Melchior is their real father after all... Performed by a spectacular ensemble cast, this all- singing and dancing show opened to rapturous reviews at London’s Old Vic in 2018. As he prepares to embark on an overseas tour, star actor Garry Essendine’s colourful life is in danger of spiralling out of control. Engulfed by an escalating identity crisis as his many and various relationships compete for his attention, Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex, panic and soul-searching. The pictures originated in the camera and were then worked on by the artist to enhance the image. Monday 19 August - Wednesday 4 September Indira Creed-Miles - ‘Celebration of Humanity’ Indira’s exhibition is inspired by identity and the idea that everyone is uniquely individual. Her work explores the abstract expressionistic style, using energetic mark making and saturated vibrant colour. The exhibition features an array of colourful portraits that reflect diversity.
