WELCOME p.It seems a bit premature to be looking to the spring but our next season is already in bud. There’s a great variety of live shows from A Guide to the Wonders of Birdsong, and An Evening with John Illsley founder member of Dire Straits, to Nick Sharratt’s Right Royal Drawalong. We have live theatre in the shape of the one-woman comedy-drama Bette Davis On the Edge, concerts from the exquisite Orchestra of the Swan, vibrant folk music from Don Kipper, and absurd comedy from Barry Cryer and Colin Sell. Via satellite the Bolshoi Ballet, RSC, NT Live and Royal Opera seasons continue and we also have The Great Escape with Dan Snow commemorative evening. 01386 555488 EVENTS The Sleeping Beauty Recorded at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow The Princess Aurora falls under the curse of the evil fairy Carabosse on her sixteenth birthday, falling into a hundred year slumber. Only the kiss of a prince could break the spell. A resplendent fairytale ballet perfomed by the Bolshoi and recorded for the big screen, The Sleeping Beauty features scores of magical characters including fairies, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, and a beautiful young Princess Aurora performed by Olga Smirnova. This is classical ballet at its finest! Join John here in person at Number 8 for an evening featuring Dire Straits hits and a Q&A led by Paul Cummins (ex- Dire Straits management). John will reveal the story of the band from its humble beginnings in a council flat in South London, where songs like Sultans of Swing and Wild West End were created, to international fame. John will be joined by fellow musicians from his band to play music from the Dire Straits catalogue including, Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Romeo and Juliet and Sultans of Swing. EVENTS www.number8.org Don Kipper in Concert Multi award-winning seven-piece Don Kipper play a range of traditional music, reflecting the cultural diversity of North East London, from Turkish and Greek folk music to Romani music and klezmer. While rooting themselves deeply in the traditions that surround them, they also like to bring these musical cultures together in innovative and exciting ways, mirroring London's vibrant, cosmopolitan energy. Don Kipper have performed as the BBC Introducing act at WOMAD, been featured on BBC Radio 3 and the BBC World Service, released two albums, and played two European tours. Saturday 23 March - 7.30pm Tickets: £11 1hrs 50mins (inc interval) The Great Escape with Dan Snow: A Gala Screening on the 75th Anniversary The 24th of March 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the real-life POW escape during WWII at the Luftwaffe- run Stalag Luft III prison in then German-occupied Poland. In honour of this, Dan Snow hosts a commemorative evening at the Eventim Apollo in London featuring Britain’s Got Talent finalists The D-Day Darlings performing songs from their album, and special guests including war veterans and historians. Audiences will discover how Squadron Leader Roger ‘Big X’ Bushell’s ingenious plan inspired one of the most famous war films of all time. The event will be broadcast live via satellite to Number 8 followed by a screening of the classic 1963 film, starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough. 01386 555488 EVENTS La Forza del Destino Live from the Royal Opera House, London Leonora falls in love with Don Alvaro, but when her father forbids their marriage, a fatal accident triggers a drama of obsession, vengeance and tragedy. Jonas Kaufmann and Anna Netrebko star in Verdi’s epic La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny) an opera which demands the very best of singers for its powerful music and the fullest theatrical treatment for its story of bitter revenge pursued across miles and years. The production comes to The Royal Opera in a sensational staging from Amsterdam packed with colour and action and will be beamed live via satellite to Number 8. It is directed by Christof Loy and conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera. EVENTS www.number8.org Exhibition on Screen: Rembrandt From the National Gallery, London & Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated but this major show hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum was an event like no other. Given privileged access to both galleries the film documents this landmark exhibition, whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story, with behind-the- scenes preparations. Exploring many of the exhibition’s key works, with contributions from curators and leading art historians, this Exhibition on Screen favourite makes a welcome return to the big screen marking the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt's death. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived, this moving film explores the truth about the man behind the legend. EVENTS www.number8.org RSC: As You Like It Recorded at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon Come into the forest; dare to change your state of mind. Rosalind is banished, wrestling with her heart and her head. With her cousin by her side, she journeys to a world of exile where barriers are broken down and all can discover their deeper selves. Director Kimberley Sykes (Dido, Queen of Carthage) directs a riotous, exhilarating version of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy. This is the first screening in the 2019 season from the RSC, see p.14 and p.15 for details of future screenings. Join acclaimed children’s writer and illustrator Nick Sharratt and draw along with him! And to celebrate his latest book Nice Work for the Cat and the King everything will have a special 'royal' twist! 01386 555488 EVENTS Faust Live from the Royal Opera House, London There are many versions of the story of Faust, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power, but Gounod’s opera remains one of the most constantly enthralling. Michael Fabiano stars as Faust, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet sequences and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle - the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar, set in 1870s Paris. Above all, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognisable numbers, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus. It’s make or break for her fading career, and she knows it. Reflecting on her past glories from the first talkies to the present day, her story is the entire history of the American motion picture industry. A fascinating insight into the heart and soul of one of the greatest names from the golden age of cinema. This superb one-woman comedy drama tour de force written and performed by Christine St. John is a shining example of what live theatre is all about. America, 1947. Despite hard choices and even harder knocks, Joe and Kate Keller are a success story. They have built a home, raised two sons and have a thriving business. But nothing lasts forever and their lives, already shadowed by the loss of their eldest boy to war, are about to shatter.
