EM ERGENCY CONTA CTS & SA FETY I NFO Peruvian Nat ional Pol ice (PNP) Tel: 105 pnp.gob.pe Firef ight ers Tel: 116 bomberosperu.gob.pe Embassy / Consul ar Cont act Inf o of Count ries Represent ed in Perú General Carry identification with you at all times, keeping a photocopy of your passport data page (leave original at home in a safe place) in your purse or wallet, even after receiving your residency card. Eart hquakes Perú is in an active earthquake zone and you will experience the occasional light tremor. In the event of a severe quake, make your way to the nearest outdoor "safe zone," which are designated on the pavement by a large yellow circled ?S.?It is advised to take notice of these in your daily routine so that you know where they are in advance of an emergency. It is further advised to have at home, in an easy to grab location, an emergency bag containing essentials: a first aid kit, blankets, water, non-perishable food, matches, a flashlight and a radio with fresh batteries, etc. Crime As is true in all big cities around the world, robberies, particularly in areas frequented by tourists are not uncommon. In all districts of the city there exists a roaming uniformed security force known as Serenazgo. The best defense however, is the use of common sense. Particularly while getting to know your way around, remain aware of your surroundings, don't walk around alone at night, and always avoid displaying flashy jewelry, cellphones, cash, and other valuables in public places. Taxis There are an abundance of taxis, legal/ official and those that are independently operated and unregistered. Naturally, the latter, unofficial type are often less expensive but we recommend that you only take cabs from legitimate companies such as Easy Taxi, Uber and 35555555Sat el it al . Regardless of which type or company you choose, always agree on the fare before your trip, as cabs here have no meters. More importantly, while in the cab never have anything of value out in plain sight, or on the seat next to you. Keep your cell phone in your pocket and purses and other bags on the floor in front of you. Thieves coming through the window and snatching items of value is not unheard of. Driving During peak travels times; traffic in Lima is horrendous it can take an extraordinarily long time to go a short distance. Frustrating as this is, the general lack of safe driving habits and etiquette in the streets of Lima are far more so. Stop signs and traffic lights are often ignored, turn signals when used, are often at the very last second, and turns in front of other cars from the far opposite lane are the norm. Additionally, it is a mistake to assume that cars will stop or slow down for your physical safety when you are on foot. Many expats and Peruvians alike, simply choose not to drive. Should you decide to brave it, decide quickly not to take being cut-off or the general lack of respect for other drivers personally, or you will be miserable every time you get behind the wheel. Uncool, but it is what it is. +51 1 206 4235 P. 1

TRA NSPORTA TI ON Privat e Car / Taxi The public transport network is not particularly user friendly and many Expats choose to travel by auto, whether personal or by hired car / taxi. Unfortunately, the number of cars on the road is increasing every year (many within the growing middle class are purchasing their first car) and as such, particularly at peak hours, unless it is really necessary you may not want to be in the streets at all. If it necessary to travel during rush hours, be sure you have allotted a sufficient of time to get to your destination and have armed your self with an arsenal of patience. Parking Depending on the both the time of day and the particular area, free and legal street parking can be almost impossible to find. That being said you will see quite a lot of "illegal" parking, particularly in the street to an adjacent curb's yellow painted line. Beware if you do however. The municipal tow ruck may transport your car to a lot from where you have to retrieve it and pay a fine. Alternately, you may receive either a hard to remove warning sticker on your window or a ticket in the mail, which if you don't pay promptly increases in amount over time. In some areas you will have individuals on the street working for the given municipality (colored vest identifying as such) that will you charge to park there by the hour. It is quite inexpensive. In other areas you will encounter individuals claiming to watch your car and will usually help guide you into or out of your spot, who expect to receive a "propina" or tip. One Sol is sufficient. Another option, where available, to is to pay to park in a lot or "playa de estacionamiento," where you can park paying a typical hourly rate of between 5-10 soles. Met ropol it ano / Bl ue Line Buses If you do choose to travel by public transport and the direction in which you need to go is serviced by either the modern Metropolitano (bus line running down the center of the "Via Expresa," or expressway) or the Linea Azul / Corredor Azul bus line, which operates on a growing number of major avenues, then these are by far Recommended Taxi Services 3555555 Sat el it al - Tel: +51 (1) 355-5555 3555555sat el it al .com Easy Taxi - Tel: +51 (1) 716-4600 easyt axi.com/ pe Uber - Uber.com/ l ima Public Transit Met ropol it ano - met ropol it ano.com.pe / CorredorAzul - met ropol it ano.com.pe/ corredor-azul The Met ro (Línea 1) - l ineauno.pe +51 1 206 4235 P. 7
RESTA URA NTS No guide to Lima would be complete without a robust restaurant section. Although by no means complete, this topic deserving an extensive publication all to itself, we hope that you will find following pages a helpful start to your local culinary adventure. Peruvian cuisine is quite unique, reflecting not only local practices and ingredients, but a wide range of influences from around the world. In addition to the influences of the indigenous population, the cuisine of Perú has clear roots from this country's diverse European, Asian and African immigrant groups. In Lima, and in all of Perú, you will eat very well. Whether you choose to dine at one of the best restaurants in the world, at one of the thousands of Pollerias or Chifas, at a recommended neighborhood "huariques" or at a food stand in one of the local markets you won't be disappointed. Often the best places are the cheapest. Lima is dotted with "menús," These small, sign-less eateries offer a delicious 2 or 3 course meal for the equivalent of just a few US Dollars. In recent years, Peruvian cuisine has attained an international reputation of excellence, with some great chefs including Gastón Acurio, and Virgilio Martinez gaining stardom with the ranking of their restaurants among the very best in the world. Traditionally ceviche is eaten on sunny summer days with a cold beer. Although some restaurants, particularly those frequented by tourists serve ceviche in the evening, typically Limeños won't eat it after the sun goes down. There are some excellent cevicheria chains that have several locations including Punt a Sal , Pescados Capit al es , and Punt o Azul . Other popular spots include Gaston Acurio's La Mar in Miraflores, world famous Chez Wong in La Victoria and a 35 year old local favorite, Rest aurant Sonia in Chorrillos. +51 1 206 4235 P. 8

HOLI DA YS National Holiday List January 1 - New Year's Day (Año Nuevo) April 18 - Maundy Thursday (Jueves Santo) April 19 - Good Friday (Viernes Santo) April 21- Easter Sunday (Domingo de Resurrección) May 1 - Labor Day (Día del Trabajo) June 29 - Saint Peter and Saint Paul (Festividad de San Pedro y San Pablo) Jul y 28 - Independence Day (Fiesta de la Independencia Nacional) Jul y 29 - Armed Forces Day (Fiesta de la Independencia Nacional) August 30 - Santa Rosa de Lima (Festividad de Santa Rosa de Lima) Oct ober 8 - Battle of Angamos (Celebración de la Batalla de Angamos) November 1 - All Saints Day (Día de Todos los Santos) December 8 - Immaculate Conception's Day (Día de la Inmaculada Concepción) December 25 - Christmas (Día de Navidad) In Perú, we recognize a number of informal days of celebration, (not official national holidays) many of a culinary theme. There is for instance Ceviche day, celebrating this country's national dish, day of the potato, and la semana del Chilcano, a week long celebration of the popular cocktail made with Pisco, the national liquor. Easter weekend is always a four day holiday with the Thursday and Friday prior, also being national holidays. Traditionally a time for being with family, a great many Peruvians living abroad head home for this holiday, often making it quite difficult to get a hotel room or seat on a plane at reasonable prices. If planning to visit around this time, make sure and book far in advance. Easter weekend also marks the end of the beach season and for many of Lima's younger residents, this is THE camping weekend with the beach areas typically being where they head. In Perú Labor Day is not as widely observed as it is in other South American countries. Although you usually get demonstrations in the major cities like Lima and Arequipa, on the whole the holiday is treated more like the May Day bank holiday in the UK. The weather is pleasant in the highlands at this time of year, and so if it coincides with a long weekend, many Peruvians take the opportunity to do things like visit Machu Picchu or other national attractions. +51 1 206 4235 P. 23
more on..... HOLI DA YS Many people expect the festival of Corpus Christi (on 23 June) to be a public holiday, because there are huge street processions and parades on that date every year, but actually the only June holiday in Peru is six days later, for the annual feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Since he was a fisherman, St. Peter in particular is venerated at this time in the hundreds of fishing villages and harbours up and down the Peruvian coast. In Lima there are parades and processions in the district of Chorrillos. The 28th of July, the day that Peru officially declared its independence from Spain in 1821, and the following day are both official holidays and collectively known as "Fiestas Patrias." On the 29th, a traditional military parade broadcast on television and followed by most homes in Perú, is the official celebration of the Peruvian Armed Forces and National Police. If the 28th or 29th happen to fall on a weekend, the Friday before and/ or Monday after is often declared a public holiday to give residents a long weekend for this, the biggest holiday of the year. For some, it is also time for getting away from it all, particularly the grey Lima winter, and they head to the mountains to get some sun! Santa Rosa, Lima?s patron saint, is hugely popular throughout Perú, especially with Peruvian women. Huge, colourful processions with floats, flowers and balloons take place on August 3oth, and are really worth taking in, if in Lima during this holiday. On October 8th of each year, we celebrate the 1879 battle of Angamos, during the War of the Pacific with Chile. Although Perú actually lost this key maritime battle and ultimately the war, this holiday is held in commemoration of national hero Rear Admiral Miguel Grau, who died in combat on that fateful day. October is Mes Morado (purple month) in Perú, and the faithful dress from head to toe in purple as a sign of their devotion to El Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of Miracles). This Christ figure, known for its miracle-working powers, is housed in the Church of the Nazarenes in downtown Lima, and thousands of purple clad worshippers come to pray and make offerings during the entire month. There are several processions on different dates in October, including a 24 hour procession which is one of the largest annual processions in all of the Americas. The key procession dates are October 18th, 19th, and October 28th. Inmaculada concepción/ Immaculate conception (Dia de la Virgen) marks the start of the Christmas period. In spite of what one would think, this catholic holiday is not referring to the conception of Jesus but rather the conception of Maria, Jesus' mother. +51 1 206 4235 P. 24
