Criteria for Honours, Awards and Prizes Purpose This document sets out the current process which allows the College to recognise outstanding achievement in the fields of anaesthesia or relevant science, critical care medicine or pain medicine. Criteria The awards are described in descending order of seniority. Reflection on the successful contributions made by previous recipients is a good starting point when considering at what level a nomination should be advanced. Process of nomination Any Fellow or member can suggest nominations for consideration on behalf of Council by the Nominations Committee. This Committee is the most senior Committee of Council, usually chaired by a current or previous Vice-President, and including the President and Vice- Presidents, members of Council and the Chief Executive. The Committee normally meets twice yearly although electronic communications may be used if nominees are being considered for specific events or against accelerated timelines. The Secretary to the Committee co- ordinates this process and is the primary point of contact for proposed nominations. The Nominations Proposal Form and guidance for its completion can be found at Annexe 1. The recommendations of the Committee are considered and ratified by Council without appeal. The process meets the requirements of discrimination legislation. Self-nomination is discouraged, except for those awards made by application. Previous receipt of an award does not preclude a further nomination of a different award. Previous recipients of these awards are listed in Annexe 2. List of Honours, Awards and Prizes Fellowship Honorary Fellowship From 2018, the categories of Fellowship by Election and Honorary Fellowship have been combined into a single category, Honorary Fellowship. The award of our Fellowship is considered for practitioners across the world who have made sustained and significant contributions to the practice of anaesthesia or relevant science, critical care medicine or pain medicine. This activity has to be at an internationally active level and normally sustained for at least ten years. Honorary Fellowships may be awarded to non-medically qualified practitioners such as scientists with a similar level of achievement and to members of the Royal Family or others who have furthered the work of the College in a sustained way. Evidence through the Nominations Proposal Form should document this activity and the outcome of such work. Whilst there are no limits to the number of awards at this level it is unusual to award more than two or three a year. Previous Fellows are listed in Annexe 2. Fellowship ad eundem Awarded to medical practitioners practising anaesthesia in the UK in a substantive consultant post, who have been elected as Fellows by Council for furthering the interests of the College. A list of Fellows ad eundem is kept on the College database. The Application Form and guidance can be found at Annexe 4. Fellowship by examination Council receive the list of successful candidates in the Final FRCA examinations from the Examinations Committee. Examination prizes are described in a separate section of this document. Page 2 of 36
Criteria for Honours, Awards and Prizes College Awards The Gold Medal This is our highest award to a Fellow of the College in recognition of sustained work for the College at the highest level. Examples would include work over decades to support anaesthesia, critical care or pain medicine at a national or international level. (This does not include activity delivered as a senior officer of the College or where such activity has been commissioned or rewarded in other ways). This medal is rarely awarded. Previous medalists are listed in Annexe 2. The College Medal This is awarded to those who have made a clear and significant contribution to the College. This is normally related to a defined major project and is considered on successful completion or delivery of that project. There is no limitation to the number of medals awarded but it is unusual for more than one or two a year to be considered. Previous medallists are listed in Annexe 2. The Dudley Buxton Prize An endowed trust fund was established in 1967 to provide an annual award of a prize for ‘meritorious work in anaesthesia or in a science contributing to the progress of anaesthesia.’ The prize consists of a bronze medal. Previous awardees are listed in Annexe 2. Page 3 of 36
Criteria for Honours, Awards and Prizes The Humphry Davy Award This may be awarded to a team or organisation for improving clinical care. This is normally awarded annually, but there may exceptionally be more awards in any one year. The standard expected is for sustained contributions to the College, usually in a specific area of activity. This is national activity but may include successfully completed commissioned activity. The project or activity has to be significant for the College and involve high levels of commitment and delivery over some years although usually less than the ten years criteria for the higher awards. Previous awardees are listed in Annexe 2. Please note this award was converted into a team award and this change was agreed by Council on 20 November 2019. President’s Commendation Introduced in 2011, this is awarded to those who have provided a sustained or specific contribution to the College. Previous awardees are listed in Annexe 2. Lectureships Joseph Clover and Frederic Hewitt These prestigious lectureships are delivered at appropriate national meetings. They are awarded to established senior clinicians, academic experts or pioneers in their fields who have advanced the science or art of anaesthetic practice. Academic nominees would normally be senior post holders at professorial or readership level. Previous lectureship holders are listed in Annexe 2. Page 4 of 36

John Snow Oration This lectureship is awarded by the College on behalf of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia Health Services Research Centre and delivered at an appropriate national meeting. The orations are awarded to established senior clinicians (including non-anaesthetists), academic experts, policy makers or pioneers in the field who have made a significant contribution to advancing the field of Health Services Research in relation to Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, Pain, or Critical Care Medicine. Academic nominees would normally be senior post holders at professorial level with an international reputation in Health Services Research. Page 5 of 36
Criteria for Honours, Awards and Prizes Macintosh Professor This prestigious lecture and title is awarded on the recommendation of the Board of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA). It is in recognition of outstanding contributions to the wider field of anaesthesia in a senior academic or clinician. In the case of an academic it would normally be at a senior lecturer level. The delivery of the lecture will be at a suitable scientific meeting and the title of ‘Macintosh Professor’ is bestowed for one year from the date of Council’s approval of the award. This award is made by application and is advertised. Previous Professorship holders are listed in Annexe 2. The Rank Lectureship The Rank Fund is intended to pay for overseas lecturers to speak at major College meetings and visit other parts of the country to give formal lectures, undertake informal teaching and/or to discuss research visits. Visits normally last at least a week and include visits to at least three centres. Lectureships are not awarded every year. It is helpful but not essential if proposals include suggestions for hosting and visits to other centres. Previous awardees are listed in Annexe 2. Webb-Johnson Oration This lectureship is to honour the name of Lord Alfred Webb-Johnson, past President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The lectureship is awarded by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng). The oration is delivered at an appropriate national meeting on the theme of perioperative medicine. The annual award alternates between an anaesthetist and surgeon. Criteria for Honours, Awards and Prizes Annexe 4 : Fellow ad eundem application form and guidance – Royal College of Anaesthetists Criteria This Fellowship is open to doctors practising in anaesthesia, critical care or pain medicine in the UK who do not hold the RCoA Fellowship in Anaesthesia and who meet the criteria as set out below. Fellowship ad eundem – guidance for applicants and the RCoA Nominations Committee Applications for Fellowship ad eundem are considered by the College through the Nominations Committee. This guidance clarifies the technical requirements for Fellowship ad eundem and provides guidance to applicants and to members of RCoA Nominations Committee. The RCoA Regulations for Fellowship ad eundem 1. Entry route (a) Any person in bona fide practice of the profession of anaesthesia, critical care or pain medicine in the United Kingdom, who satisfies the conditions specified in this Regulation, may apply for admission to Fellowship of the College ad eundem provided that they hold one of the following qualifications: (i) Any specialist qualification in Anaesthesia, Critical Care or Pain Management for the time being accepted under the terms of the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order for admission to the Specialist Register in the United Kingdom; (b) In addition the conditions which must be satisfied by an applicant for the Fellowship ad eundem are that: (i) The applicant is in practice in the United Kingdom in a substantive or honorary consultant post; (ii) Council consider the applicant to have furthered the interests of the College and/or the specialty; (iii) The applicant is a fit and proper person. 2. A person who is eligible to be admitted a Fellow ad eundem shall submit their application for election to the College which may also, in any case in which it thinks fit, invite such an application to be made. 3. An application for election to Fellowship ad eundem shall be accompanied by the following documents and such other matters as may be prescribed: (a) a Declaration, in the prescribed form, signed by the applicant; (b) a curriculum vitae of the applicant; (c) a certificate, signed by six Fellows of the College, to the effect that the applicant is a fit and proper person to be admitted to the Fellowship. No Fellow who is deprived of privileges, for whatever reason, shall be eligible, while so deprived, to sign a certificate for the purpose of sub-paragraph (c) of this regulation. 4. An application, with accompanying documents, shall be submitted to Council through the committee with responsibility for considering such applications which, if satisfied that it meets the requirements of the Charter and these regulations and is otherwise acceptable, may recommend to Council that it should be granted. 5. Council shall consider a recommendation for admission to Fellowship ad eundem. If there is not a clear consensus a candidate’s application receiving the votes of two thirds or more of the elected Council members present shall be duly approved. 6. An applicant whose application for admission to the Fellowship ad eundem has been approved by Council shall be required to attend the College or other such location as the Council may determine for the Declaration of Fellowship to be administered to them in the presence of the President or Vice President whereupon, having signed their name in the Roll of Fellows, they shall be admitted to the Fellowship. The President or Vice President shall welcome the Fellow who will then or as soon as is practicable be given their Diploma Certificate. Page 30 of 36
Criteria for Honours, Awards and Prizes Advice for applicants and the RCoA Nominations Committee Fellowship ad eundem is literally equivalent to a Fellow of the College and is not just about a test of knowledge (FRCA) or about being on the specialist register as both of these are addressed separately by different processes. (a) The objective of the selection process is to identify and support individuals who are or are beginning to engage in a material way with the College. Whilst we definitely wish to discourage ‘stamp collectors’ we do not want to bar or grossly discourage credible emerging individuals at the start of meaningful interactions with the College. Typically a Fellowship ad eundem will have all of the characteristics as someone who is both FRCA and a ‘good Consultant’ plus a ‘bit more’. Typically this might comprise: ■ College Tutor * ■ Other significant educational contribution in their own department ■ The equivalent for Pain or Intensive Care Medicine (Faculty Tutor) * ■ Regularly lecturing on College CPD events or courses with good feedback ■ Other service to the College * In some cases applicants may be ‘on the cusp’ of some of these roles. External markers of above average contribution include participation in regional/national/international societies, national NHS roles etc etc. These are important but they are not a substitute for a reasonable degree of engagement with the College. Thus no matter how celebrated somebody is for external markers unless there is at least some moderate degree of engagement with the College then it would not be appropriate for them to receive Fellowship ad eundem. (b) W hen evaluating an application for Fellowship ad eundem, the threshold should be that the assessor believes (from the evidence provided) that ‘on the balance of probabilities’ the applicant will, over the next few years, meaningfully engage with the College in a sustained and useful manner or that they are already doing so. How to make an application ■ The application form is available from The Membership Department at the Royal College of Anaesthetists (direct line: 020 7092 1700 e-mail: membership@rcoa.ac.uk) ■ Part 1 of the form should be completed by the applicant, who should then arrange for Part 2 to be signed by six Fellows of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, who attest that the applicant has furthered the interests of the College and is a ‘fit and proper’ person to be admitted to the Fellowship. It is important to note that no Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, who is currently deprived of privileges, is eligible to sign Part 2 of the form. Any Fellow who is in doubt about his or her status should check with the College’s Membership Supervisor (direct line: 020 7092 1701, e-mail: membership@rcoa.ac.uk). ■ The completed form should be returned to The Membership Department at the Royal College of Anaesthetists with a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae. Completed forms will be considered at the next scheduled Nominations committee meeting ■ There is no fee for applying for Fellowship ad eundem. Successful applicants become Fellows of the College and thereby pay the annual Fellowship subscription, and will in due course receive a subscription payment request. Consideration of applications by the College ■ Applications are initially considered by the Nominations Committee, which may seek further information from the applicant, or may defer a decision until the applicant is able to meet any relevant criteria not already met, or may recommend to Council that Fellowship ad eundem be granted to the applicant. ■ The Committee’s recommendations are forwarded to the following monthly meeting of the College Council which is invited to approve the recommendations. ■ Applicants are informed of the decision of Council. Successful applicants are invited to attend a Presentation Ceremony, at which time they are admitted to the Fellowship and receive their Diploma. They are then invited to join the President and Members of the Council for lunch. ■ Further details are given to successful applicants following the outcome of their application. Page 31 of 36
