ÉCPS COUGAR CORNER February 2022 ÉCPS Principal’s Post, Five months of school have come and gone and just like that we find ourselves now sitting in the blustery month of love, also known as February. Whatever the month of February means to you; a short month, a month of love and romance, a single day of supporting Hallmark, or even a midpoint mark to help you get through the rest of the winter season, embrace all that it has to offer. Continue to teach your children to be compassionate and kind and in return, the world will be just that much sweeter! Our Carnaval celebration is a high-light for both staff and students and we are absolutely thrilled to be taking part in the many activities planned throughout the first week of the month; theme days, crowning our Roi et Reine, classroom games, poutine lunch, the hot chocolate cart, snow sculptures, sledding, cabane sucre and who could forget a visit from our giant snow friend, Bonhomme! It is going to be a wonderful time. Report cards were emailed home on Monday, January 31st. Please take the time to sit with your child and discuss their report card with them. Now is the perfect opportunity for setting goals and self-reflection. As always, should you have any concerns regarding your child’s report, I encourage you to get in touch with their classroom teacher. Our next set of Parent-Teacher Conferences will occur in March, but you certainly do not have to wait until then to discuss your child’s progress or any concerns you may have. Kindergarten registration opened on Wednesday January 19th. If you are planning on sending your child to school in September of 2022, or know a parent who is, we greatly appreciate early registration as this allows us to plan for the coming year. The student must be turning 5 years old by December 31, 2022 in order to attend. We currently offer both a morning and afternoon French Immersion program and a morning program for our English students. Please visit our website for our registration link. Yours in Education, Mrs. S. McCubbing

From late January to mid-February, hundreds of thousands of people take part in competitions, outdoor activities and winter sports, often derived from Quebec traditions: ice canoe races, snowshoeing, dog sledding, snow sculptures and large parades of colourful floats. Carnaval is a huge tradition at ÉCPS, as it is a way we can all celebrate French Culture. With the restrictions placed on us due to COVID, however, we will not be able to have our traditional Carnaval festivities, but we do have alternative plans in place to happen both school-wide and within each classroom. January 28th - “Duc et Duchesse” During Carnaval time, the city is divided into sections. Each section is represented by a “duc” who would then traditionally, chose a “duchesse”. At ÉCPS, each teacher will nominate a “duc et duchesse” or Duke and Duchess to represent their class. February 1st - “Roi et Reine” Announced On this day all “duc et duchesse” nominees are entered to have their name randomly drawn to be crowned our “Roi et Reine” or King and Queen. February 2nd - Joyeux Carnaval! Tuque day Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favourite tuque in the spirit of celebrating Carnaval. Teachers will have activities happening in their classrooms for a portion of the day. Poutine will be served for lunch for those that chose to enjoy! February 3rd - Bûcheron Day (wear anything plaid) Les Bûcheron (lumberjacks) were men and women who worked vigorously for many hours a day during the 60s. Forestry was a central part of Quebec's economy and way of life. Therefore, we celebrate them during carnival as they are part of Quebec's history. February 4th - Red & White Day Students are encouraged to wear traditional Carnaval colours of red and white. Page 3
