The Courier Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches College bound Rancher is proud recipient of prestigious scholarship At the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, our program revolves around four pillars: Work, Study, Play and Pray. We believe this philosophy helps our boys and girls grow into well- rounded, successful adults. “Study” is a vital part of life at the Youth Ranches. Many boys and girls in our program come from challenging environ- ments or have begun to fall in with the wrong crowd. This means that their grades have suffered as a result. Because of our generous donor family, we are able to provide tools to help these youth get back on track! We can provide one-on-one tutoring, vocational classes, and online courses designed to help students catch up and graduate on time with their peers. Recently, one of our students at the Youth Ranches was se- lected to receive the Biletnikoff Scholarship. Noah’s teachers encouraged him to apply and tell his story. Noah submitted an essay chronicling his life of growing up with parents that struggled with addiction and how his family rallied around to support him. When Noah continued to act out in response to his experiences as a child, his family found the Florida Sher- iffs Youth Ranches. Here, Noah was able to get a chance to experience the pa- tience and gentle encouragement of his cottage parents while getting specialized attention from his teachers. The Courier More Community Service District 2 slowly returning to normal FMA District 2 is in a County which until early this month was under significant restrictions and a curfew. The District has reached out at out District meetings; we have been actively reaching out to our communities. As part of this, the District has done Heart of the Community functions at the meeting. In November we conducted a food drive that was donated to the homeless shelter distribution center. In December, a toy drive was conducted and the toys went to the USMCR Toys-For-Tots and the Nicholas Children’s Hospital. In January the District conducted a blood drive at the meeting and it was successful and it will be repeated again at the June meeting. The April meeting was our fundraiser pig roast and picnic which was the first gath- ering of size using the West Dade Lodge’s back yard to socially distance and a locally known band Iko-Iko got together possibly for the last time to perform for the function. It was a good time for all and we even had the privilege of having as a guest the Deputy Grand Regent from Texas, Dawn O’Conner, join us for the meeting and the picnic. The Courier Lodge and Chapter News Local Moose lodge donates to veterans honor guard As part of the Valued Veterans program of Moose Interna- tional, Moose Lodge 2112 in Inverness recently donated $1,000 to the Citrus County All Veteran Honor Guard (CCAVHG). “Last year, a golf tournament raised $7,300 to go toward supporting local veterans,” said Dennis Galinski, Moose Lodge 2112 governor. He said they wanted to help the honor guard with funds for gas and maintenance for their bus, which they use to travel to the National Cemetery in Bushnell as many as three or four times a week for veterans’ funerals. CCAVHG is not from one specific organization, such as the VFW or American Legion, although many of its members be- long to one or more of these groups, said Dennis “Choke” Kocielko. “We have about 10 active members, and we’re al- ways looking for more,” he said. The honor guard is open to military veterans or a family member of a veteran who wants to serve the community by honoring fallen veterans.
