IRF History HISTORY Since 1997, the International Rafting Federation (IRF) is recognised as the world governing body for Rafting. We are a non-profit, democratic, global affiliation of sporting entities and personalities, responsible for fostering fair, credible and legitimate international rafting competition at all levels. The IRF organises the World Rafting Championship (WRC), the top tier competition between the most recognised and celebrated rafting athletes in the world who gather together once a year to represent their respective nations. The IRF also organises or oversees a tremendous variety of continental, regional and local rafting competitions and championships. Our purpose in sport is to promote Olympic values (called Olympism) in order to place sport at the service of humanity for a better world. IRF competitions closely follow the Olympic model and International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendations, while remaining true to the traditions and history of our sport. The IRF supports the fight against doping and any other forms of cheating in sport, and is fully committed to a strong code of ethics, transparency, good governance and accountability. Recognised as the world body which oversees the certification and training of professional river rafting guides, the IRF works closely with national organisations and government bodies by offering the only rafting guide certification program accepted worldwide. Through our various courses and certifications, we ensure a global standard of guides while continually evolving raft techniques to keep everyone safer on rafting excursions. 9
IRF History HISTORY We recognise that humans are not the owners of our planet, but instead are its caretakers and stewards. We believe free flowing rivers are necessary for a healthy world, and we strive to protect them from senseless destruction. Our intimate connection with rivers and the natural environment places us in a key role dedicated towards educating others to ensure that future generations enjoy sustainable access to clean water and free flowing rivers. The IRF is about bringing the world of rafting together so we can all benefit from our interaction. This interaction may involve anything from competing at the world championship level to being part of a local grassroots event in your home town. Or it could be that once- in-a-lifetime experience of going on a commercial raft trip locally or around the world, whether it be for 1 hour or multiple days. Rafting is a sport and recreational pursuit that is accessible to the general public through commercial tourism operators, sport and recreation clubs. Rafting is a low environmental impact activity that creates awareness of conservation and environmental appreciation while show-casing the skill elements involved in the sport. The IRF, the trustee of the rafting tradition, maintains and promotes the conditions which encourages the practice and the development of rafting at all competition, commercial and recreational levels. 10

It has a capacity of 88 megawatts (MW) produced by four generators, which provide power to the National Electricity Market. Taking its name from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘big water’, the Kareeya Hydro project originally comprised construction of Koombooloomba Dam, the Tully Falls Weir and Kareeya Hydro. raft race Disciplines Sprint The Sprint is a hard, fast, short burst of speed for the teams. It is ideally over a fairly short distance and is about two to three minutes of hard paddling for 10% off the overall points. It is always done first, cannot be on a Class 5 rapid and teams are set off one by one, hence racing the clock and not each other. H2H The H2H is without doubt the most visually exciting discipline as it is pitting two teams together in a fast paced sprint for the finish line. It is ideally over a shortish distance but must be through a rapid, normally taking teams about two to three minutes to run the course. The two teams are set off together with the team having the best time in the Sprint being given lane choice. They have to negotiate one left hand buoy and one right hand buoy from a minimum two buoys on each side. This leads to tactics being played and so is not all down to strength and speed. It counts for 20% of the total points and is an elimination. The winner of each heat proceeds to the next round and eventually just two teams will remain for the Final. Slalom The Slalom is the most technically challenging event and counts for 35% of the total points. This event demands a high level of technique and teamwork to negotiate the rafts through a series of downriver and upriver gates in powerful rapids. Touching, failing to pass or intentionally moving a gate results in a penalty. Each team runs the course twice and their best time is used to determine the results. DOWNRIVER The Downriver is the star event and is worth 35% of the total score. The race is close to an hour of racing along of a section of continuous and powerful rapids. Technical ability and endurance are essential elements to ensuring a good position in this event which is crucial for the teams that aspire to win the Championship. The points earned by the teams in the previous events determine their position in the starting line-up in groups up to five rafts. 14

Putting local knowledge into reef action Farmers in the Tully region are trialling ways to reduce nitrogen, sediment and pesticide run-off to the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. New and retrofitted technologies like bioreactors, high efficiency sediment basins and man-made wetlands are being tested to see how effective they are at improving the quality of water entering local waterways. This major reef water quality project is funded by the Queensland Government, but designed locally. It is responding to community demand for relevant, local information about water quality, and solutions that are informed by landscape conditions and local knowledge. It’s part of the effort being made by the broader agricultural network, that is working toward enduring and sustainable landscapes that benefit the local community. Our Local Industry The Tully Sugar Industry started in 1924 and now 220 growers farm 35,000 ha and each year supply crops of 2.4—2.9m tonnes of sugar cane to Tully mill. 32 modern harvesting groups cut the cane from June to December. Most of the cane is hauled to the mill on narrow gauge cane railway and some is transported by road. Tully Sugar mill crushes the cane and the 320—380,000 tonnes of raw sugar produced each year is transported to Mourilyan Harbour for export. Our Corporate Vision To ensure a secure and profitable future for Tully cane growers. Our Mission CANEGROWERS provides representation, leadership and services, and promotes unity the interests of its members.
