Un mis s Alderney Train a b l e h i g h l i g h t s Alderney has the only working railway in the Channel Islands. It used to carry stones from the quarries to sites back in the 19th century. Nowadays, the old wagons have been replaced by London Underground carriages to carry visitors from Braye Station to Mannez Station at the east end of the island. It runs every Sunday from May to September and also every Saturday in July and August, departures at 2.30 & 3.30pm. £6 per adult & £3 per child return. alderneyrailway.com alderneyrailway@suremail.gg 07911 739572 Alderney Bayeux Tapestry Finale The Alderney Library is the home of Alderney’s famous Bayeux Tapestry Finale (free entry), a 3m panel that completes the story of the unfinished Bayeux Tapestry. It was stitched by over 400 residents and visitors during 2012 and was unveiled in April 2013 by the Curator of the Bayeux Tapestry. The panel shows the major events from the conclusion of the Battle of Hastings on 14th October 1066 to the coronation of William the Conqueror in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. For those interested, talks can be arranged by contacting Kate Russell on 01481 823366 or j.kate@cwgsy.net. alderneybayeuxtapestry.com Alderney Bayeux Tapestry Finale 12
Lighthouse Mannez Lighthouse, built in 1912, is 32metres high and provides a navigational light over the hazardous waters between Alderney and the French mainland. The light used to have a range of 24 nautical miles, and together with the two impressive fog horns, it protected shipping from the strong tides and numerous rocks surrounding the island. The lighthouse is now electrified and the fog horn redundant but the black and white tower remains a key landmark. Tours available every Sunday at 3pm from May-September. Alderney Bell Tower The Parish Church of St Anne is home to a glorious peal of 12 Taylor bells which are rung by a dedicated team of nearly 2 dozen volunteers aged between 13 and 93. It is the only peal of 12 bells in the Channel Islands. The bells sound out over the town for both secular and religious events. Ringing a tower bell requires many hours of practice in order to achieve sufficient mastery of the timing to be able to generate the intricate patterns required. Ringing and non-ringing visitors are always welcome, please visit alderneybells.com for more info. Contact the Visitor Information Centre for more information, 01481 822333 or tourism@alderney.gov.gg 13
Meet the island’s residents. . Bobbie – Guest House Manager at Farm Court and Lighthouse Tour Guide Life in Alderney is unique. It may seem like a quiet haven of peace and tranquillity, and a lot of the time, it is. However, there is a vibrant undertow to it, just like in the seas that surround it. I love the variety of life in Alderney: one minute you can be sitting peacefully on a bench, staring out at the waves, and the next, you’re on a train, playing the ukulele. Life in Alderney is never dull - there’s always something going on! The island’s volunteer community is strong in Alderney and the good will of people living in the island never fails to amaze me. I volunteer by conducting lighthouse tours, and I’m also a projectionist at the cinema. There are many opportunities in Alderney to volunteer for the community, and it’s great being a part of that. I think it’s a measure of the sort of place that Alderney is that so many are willing to give their time freely and willingly. It makes for a kind, caring and happy community. I’m not a particularly active person - I’m more of a reader than a runner, but I love cycling round the island on a warm April day. Obviously, being a lazy cyclist, I have an electric bike, but there’s nothing better than cycling round Alderney just as everything is bursting forth with colour and life. One of the things I discovered this summer was swimming in the actual sea – something I thought I would never do! One thing I think everyone should experience while they’re visiting the island is an Alderney sunset. The skies around Clonque at sunset are magnificent. There are many fantastic photos taken of the sun setting Burhou-wards, but I think you have to see it for yourself. Of course, there are so many must-see and must-do things in Alderney that it’s hard to pick just one, which means that people will just have to keep coming back time and time again! Tess – Pig Farmer, Radiographer and Sailing Club Commodore Alderney is a small island with a permanent community of around 2000 people living on it, although the numbers do swell during the summer months. Many villages in the UK have a similar population, however none have the diversity of shops, restaurants, clubs, and activities within their boundaries; from many different keep-fit groups to knitting, from helping clear paths with The Wildlife Trust, to going to hear top class visiting musicians play, or even playing in either of two bands yourself, or singing in the community choir. I love living here because there is so much going on. Personally I am involved in the Sailing Club, as Commodore, with sailing events to help organise and visiting sailing and yacht clubs to welcome. The daily teas every summer afternoon are very popular with locals and visitors alike, and the bar draws a crowd during the evenings. I am also in the Theatre Group, which puts on shows and plays, and brings acts to the island, as well as playing in both bands. Then there is work to fit in... I have several jobs (which is often the case here) I am the island’s radiographer, doing regular sessions in the local, well equipped hospital, and a full time on call commitment. I am also part owner in a pig farm, with daily feeding duties for the 50 or so free range rare breed pigs, and my particular interest is in the meat production, including making delicious sausages, and bacon. Then, another business I am involved in is London House - a retail shop selling homewares, electrical goods, gifts and there my job is picture framing and large format printing of photographs and canvasses. Some days I do some of every job... no chance of getting bored! It’s like I’m constantly juggling, and trying not to drop any balls! Holidays here are wonderful. The most beautiful and quiet beaches, rugged cliffs, all to be explored, before resting a while in a local hostelry or taking a picnic to one of the well placed benches to watch the sunset. You may even find me there doing the same, if I find time! Alderney Free Range Pigs 15

Star party Why star party? Alderney is very lucky to have astronomical quality skies and we want to share it with you through our Star Parties. Please see the list of events opposite; now is the time to see how special Alderney’s dark skies are, enjoy the experience and join in a star party. Alderney is the perfect location to discover the skies above us as the island is small and low-lying, set right in the English Channel with pristine air from across the Atlantic. No atmospheric pollution and the prevailing winds remain in what is known as laminar flow. Light pollution is also at an absolute minimum over large parts of the island. The island’s clear laminar air flow allows visitors to also experience many daytime atmospheric effects not often seen elsewhere, including the ‘Green Flash’, that is so common here that many ignore it. Solar pillars and sundogs (mock suns) are frequently seen as are gorgeous Earth Shadow. All can be seen at dawn as well as dusk. Whceoremesthaelivpeast The peace and tranquillity that is so characteristic of Alderney belies a history that was anything but serene. The strategic position of Alderney in the English Channel, some 60 miles due south of Portland Bill and just eight miles from the French coast, has long been understood and exploited as early as 300AD when the Romans built the small fort known as ‘The Nunnery’ at Longis Bay. Throughout the Medieval and Tudor periods, military defences were essential parts of Alderney’s life. Privateering, or licensed piracy on shipping belonging to the enemies of the Crown, provided much of Alderney’s income during the 18th century, a time when the island’s many fine Georgian properties were built. 20
HERITAGE HIGHLIGHTS Alderney Society’s Museum, talks and tours. Cambridge Battery and Battery 3 at Fort Tourgis. WWII Strongpoint ‘Bibette Head’. Channel Islands Heritage Festival 31 March – 10 May Homecoming Day – 15 December During the early Victorian period, a wide project of fortification took place on the island. The Breakwater and numerous forts and batteries were built to defend Alderney against a potential French attack. During WWII the population was evacuated to the UK and did not begin to return until late 1945. Whilst they were away, German occupying forces constructed an uncountable number of bunkers and defences against invasion using forced labour. Those returning faced hardship and uncertainty, showing indomitable spirit and resourcefulness as they slowly rebuilt their island home. Homecoming Day is remembered each year on December 15. Each wave of occupation has left indelible vestiges offering visitors the most interesting lesson of history as well as a wide exploration playground. Wild Alderney Alderney might be tiny but it offers a wide diversity of habitats and species. If you have ever wondered which season is the best to come to Alderney to see wildlife, the answer would be… that there isn’t one! There’s plenty of fascinating things to see in each and every season, but each one has a different charm. Early spring is the exciting time of “firsts of the year”: the first swallow, the first cuckoo, the first bluebell, and the first butterfly… so many species that are expectantly awaited each year. As days lengthen, many migrants return to the island. Some of them will stay and breed, others will continue on their way further north. This time of the year is ideal to enjoy the coast covered by colourful flowers and see our nesting seabirds, and especially our iconic gannets and puffins, from a boat tour! 22
Bats and (our very own blonde) hedgehogs are out during the summer nights. The weekly nocturnal guided tours are a not-to- be-missed walk for anyone wanting to meet all those fascinating creatures. With the days getting warmer, the profusion of wild flowers, including stunning orchids, would naturally attract numerous butterflies and moths, like the delicate Glanville fritillary. You might also spot our only reptile while visiting the Wildlife Bunker, the Alderney Wildlife Trust’s interpretation centre on the south cliffs. Autumn is the season of bird migration and surprises. Thousands of passerines and good numbers of raptors, waders and waterfowl pass through Alderney on their one of the most exciting times in the year journey to their wintering sites. Among for any birder, ringer, researcher and them might be some rare or unusual birds naturalist, and the best one to visit the brought by the easterly wind. It’s certainly Alderney Bird Observatory. Finally, when winter arrives, Alderney provides food and shelter for many birds in the ponds and on the fields. A stunning bird hide offers the best views of Longis pond and a shelter for naturalists. A windswept coastal walk might give you a view of a pod of dolphins or a single seal feeding in the rich waters around the island and you may also see the waves breaking over the breakwater; fascinating! It’s also at this time of the year that the first breeding seabirds return to Alderney announcing that spring is just around the corner!
