Located at 561 West Mesquite Boulevard (across the street from the Japanese Steak House) in Mesquite the store is open Monday – Friday from 10a.m – 3p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The store is completely non-profit, and all of the monies received from goods sold go toward the mortgage reduction of the church. The second and very important purpose of the thrift store is to provide a convenient, inexpensive place for citizens of the surrounding area to shop. Staffed by a cadre of up to 51 volunteers, the store offers an enormous selection of clothing, house- wares, furniture and personal necessities at very low and considerably fair prices. The volunteers not only courteously provide service to the customers, they also keep the store clean, neat and well orga- nized. In addition, many single moms with children are allowed to shop for free. Also, for persons with low incomes, the store offers great prices for anything they need for themselves and their families. According to Store Manager Barbara Durenberger, they take great pride in the selection of donations received, they work hard to keep only the best, clean merchandise and ensure everything is in good working order. The store has provided over 150 bags of clothing to SafeNest (a community service organization for needy families in the Las Vegas Valley), and fills requests from the Mesquite Cancer Society. They also donate bibs, aprons, and personal necessities to the nursing home in Mesquite. The store does accept electronic items that are not working and will refurbish or recycle those items. Blankets and pillows that are not sale worthy are donated to the animal clinic and shelter. For more information, you can call the store at (702) 346-1234. Sun City Club: Tattered Book Club .B ooks, discussions, friendships, refreshments, movies and lunch are all part of the Tattered Book Club activities. “We all enjoy getting together to share and to discuss an enjoyable, interesting book.” said Sharon Koos, president. The club was formed in 2009 and today there are 43 members. They read a variety of fiction, historical novels and, once a year, a classic. The club meets every first Wednesday of the month at 3 p.m., in a member’s home. The hostess selects a book to read, hosts the club members, leads the book discussion and serves light refreshments. This is an opportunity to visit with friends, discuss books, make new friends and enjoy delicious appetizers. When an interesting movie comes to town, the women go to the movie together and have lunch afterwards. A few books scheduled to be read in 2020 are: Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks, and An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. If you are interested, please email Sharon Koos at skoospersonal@gmail.com
